i said exactly this the other day. i can find bands that sound like zepp, hendrix, even pink floyd and the stones... but i never NEVER have heard a band like this
My old man died of Covid back in March. This was one of his FAVORITE bands of all time. He got me into them when I was knee high to a grasshopper. This is my comfort music lately. I can't NOT click on anything Boston Related.
I know how you feel, my dad too. He'd always give me money for the Juke Box and ask me to play "Blue Collar Man" by Styx, or "Dust In The Wind" by Kansas, at the Pizza Shoppe. When this album dropped it was the summer after 6th grade for me. What a time to be alive! The music!!!!!!!! If you ever seen the movie "Dazed And Confused", it was like that, except without most of the hazing😎🎸🎸
Tom Scholz is one of the smartest dudes in rock. He graduated from MIT with a master's degree in mechanical engineering and invented his own musical equipment. The combination of his song writing and producing abilities with the vocal talents of Brad Delp are unmatched. That whole album is absolute magic. You could do reactions of every song on the album and you'd be hard pressed to find a bad song. It's one of those albums like Dark Side of the Moon or The Blue Album that was just lightning in a bottle.
And 1 product from Sholze Research and Development changed guitar players lives forever. The RockMan personal practice amp was a headphone amp with limited settings that rode the coattails of the OG SONY Walkman. Though the sounds were limited, they included 2 amp tones, 2 FX, and a couple of gain settings, those tones sounded GREAT!! Various mods were made, the most successful was a permanently modded unit to fit in a padal board, others took it out of it's case and mounted them in the guitar itself. Those tones made their way into many 80's hits. A notable one would be Billy Gibbon's guitar work on the Eliminator album. SRD had other products that never sold like the Rockman (3 models) line. That unit launched a type of product that led to the current amp/FX modeling units we have today by Kemper, Fractal and Line 6, among others.
I know you want to move off the first album but “Hitch A Ride” has one of the best outro guitar solos ever recorded. About 7-8 different guitar parts/tones layered and pasted together. It definitely deserves a reaction.
Just listen to the first album top to bottom lol it's RIDICULOUS. The greatest most legendary debut album of all time. Literally EVERY song from that album was capable of launching a band's career and they had 8 out 8 absolute BANGERS on that first album.
Great analysis. The DIY album that ironically defined "corporate rock." Often imitated but never duuplicated. EVERY track is still a classic rock staple today. I wanted to hate Boston, because I like more "raw" stuff generally, but this album is undeniable brilliance. This is a beautiful song. GREAT lyrics. They speak deeply to me too. It's like a Daily Affirmation. Do "Hitch a Ride". It's their best, imo. The one song that's just a little above the other masterpieces. Btw, lqter albums have a few solid tunes, but that first album was lightning in a bottle.
I love *really* raw music (hardcore punk, and extreme metal, and more), and I also love Boston. There was a time, when I was more of a rigid punk rocker, that I wouldn't admit to liking Boston and other "polished" rock bands, but looking back, I was wrong. I still love hardcore punk, such as Black Flag, and extreme metal too, but I *cannot deny* the greatness of Boston!
No doubt this album was just....WOW...I grew up on thrash and speed metal...but Boston was always a favorite album in my cassette player...til this very day
Yeah I agree. Hitch a Ride is an EXCELLENT song. I think it also should be next. You know you're gonna end up doing the whole record eventually, guys. I wouldn't be surprised if you guys go and buy the fucking thing. It's REALLY that good start to finish. Keeping in mind THIS IS A DEBUT ALBUM. Obviously you guys are younger, I recall this coming out and I was maybe seven or eight years old and STILL I can recall the impact when it came out. It was EVERYWHERE! I've been hooked ever since. One of my go to feel good records. Aunt nothing wrong with feel good records. Corporate rock is ONLY corporate rock because corporations made it so. Without labels, these bands just ROCKED! A lot better than what's out there today (WAP)
I love the personal connection you guys made to this haha. It's funny, Ryan listens to the most brutal metal and is happy as hell, put on some mellow radio rock and dude flips his shit LMAO 🤣
This takes me back to sitting in a huge plot of vacant land with a bunch of friends. The boyfriends were playing baseball, the girlfriends were sitting smoking a joint while Boston was blasting in the background from someones car. Probably an 8 track. I just aged myself but that year I was 16 and it takes me back to that day in particular.. Thank you so much for doing this song and all the Boston songs. 😎🥰🥰🥰😎
"Peace of Mind" is my favorite Boston song. Their sound blew everyone's mind in 1976 and has grown to be Iconic. The 5 songs you listed are all great, but make no mistake about it, "Let Me Take You Home Tonight", "Something About You" and "Hitch A Ride" are also extraordinary. This is arguably the greatest debut Rock album of all-time.
The entire first album, and nearly all of the 2nd album, Don’t Look Back, is this good. Isnt it crazy, how much of an influence Boston was (and is, still), and yet, unlike so many other highly influential bands, no one truly ever captured that sound? Van Halen is the same way … tons of people were MASSIVELY influenced by them, and especially by Eddie’s playing, but good luck finding someone who genuinely captured the Van Halen sound!
Have you heard of the band Pagan's Mind? They're like a progressive power metal band, but their guitar player, Jorn Viggo Lofstad, is the closest successor to Eddie I've ever heard. It's clearly intentional, too - he's played EVH guitars his whole career, as far as I can tell. Check them out for some Van Halen like guitar!
I've never seen Ryan get hit right in the soul by a song before like this one hit. That was really cool to see. Music can do that to you. To give perspective to something else, the way this hit Ryan was the way that Jesus of Suburbia hit me except like 10-fold. So when y'all reacted to that song and didn't really get it, it just spoke to me in such a way it dug so deeply into who I was that it is hard to describe. It was cool seeing music extract that out of Ryan.
Tom Scholz graduated MIT worked for Polaroid to fund his music project...... I can't emphasize enough, he also BUILT all the electronic studio equipment used to produce the album. Much of this equipment is still used by musicians today! He revolutionized the music industry. Now listen to their second album "Don't Look Back" it is every bit as great as the first album.
I hear you guys, Tom is absolutely talking to a lot of us. Struggling to make it at 23 then you blink and you’re 55 and still haven’t made it. But you keep plugging away!!!!
This is one of my favorite reactions. You both are really awesome at what you do & how you do it. You both dig deeper than the surface lyrical message, relate it to real life in the now, are smart and bring heart & humor. Excited to see where you take us🙂
People say corporate, I say radio polished. Not enough credit is given to the engineering, but what’s even more impressive is that they strive to get that exact sound live as well. The Grudge - Tool You’ll dig it.
Yeah it's really the sound engineering that sets the album apart in a historic sense. Completely blew everything out of the water in the day, still one of the best sounding productions ever. People don't really appreciate how much of that is Tom Sholtze working as an electrical engineer.
I was having flashbacks to that one South Park episode where Stan and Kyle get a high score playing Guitar Hero to Kansas. Then they show the record executive snapping his fingers off time to the song. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
My favourite Boston song is from their second album, “Don’t Look Back,” called “A Man I’ll Never Be.” It’s a song that takes Boston into different territory, and it really hits hard for me.
Anybody who says that Boston started "Corporate Rock", whatever that means, knows nothing about the history of the band. They were notorious for taking forever between albums because they (Tom Scholz in particular) refused to allow the record company to rush their product. According to Scholz, Don't Look Back was actually an unfinished product that they finally released because the record company kept bothering them. After that, Scholz vowed never to allow a record company to rush a Boston album again.
Fell out when Ryan said "About to be my Bible" - LOL! The reason I subscribed is because of your authenticity and honest vibes. Music is a healer. Thank you gentlemen.
Fun fact: on the back of the original album, it lists the tracks and in parentheses their length. Rock & Roll Band is listed as 2 minutes and 60 seconds.
It's a solo with a huge amount of good feel - as in the feel in what they're playing. David Gilmour is a good example of a guitarist with great emphasis on feel in his solos. I'm not sure if I'm quite saying this well but I hope you know what I'm getting at.
@@caladbolg777 Definitely get what you mean, Justin. However, using David Gilmour as an example is tough. His playing, and the feel and emotion it produces, is on a whole new albeit different level.
@@chuckhutton5087 Yeah. I hear you on him being one of the best when it comes to feel, but he’s also a good example to illustrate what I’m getting at even though no one is quite like him.
I’m going to be 55 next month. I was a kid when this music came out. I liked it a lot bc it just sounded really good. Now, w/ a bit of time under my belt, I listen nowadays & think how brilliant the lyrics are. The truth of them runs deep. I enjoyed seeing you younger folk getting so much from this song 40+ yrs later. Had me smiling at the both of you
I want you guys to know that I am paying you guys 30.00 a year on patreon, because you recently gave us the option, but I would absolutely pay you guys 5.00 bucks a month or more there if there was an available level. I cant be alone in feeling this way. I have gotten hours and hours of pure joy listening - and relistening - to you guys discovering songs I know and love well. I frickin LOVE this channel!
One of the few perfect albums ever released. No filler. No down moments. It's simply perfect. Also one of the few albums that I will never tire of. 100 listens...no problem. 1,000 listens...no problem. Just a masterpiece.
This was high school for my dad. I grew up listening to this record right alongside Wu-Tang and TOOL. Music was one of the few bright spots in my childhood, and this song was one of the high points of one of my favorite records. I will never not click on Boston.
I love this entire album and this song in particular. I normally listen to heavier stuff, but when I heard this I was blown away. The genius of the lyrics is that they are relatable to absolutely everybody. I had a mental breakdown a couple of years ago and this song became my anthem after I came back from the brink. Definitely do Rock And Roll Band next.
It’s almost like aliens helped him mix the album because it’s the most perfectly mixed record to date imo .... everything it’s just perfect in the mix.... everything is blended & heard & has its place just right
Another aspect of why Boston has such a unique sound is the guitar tone. Tom started Rockman and developed his own amplifiers and effects while coming up with new ways to record music.
I love you guys, like all your followers do. I really appreciate you getting deep into music that makes up the soundtrack to our lives. It makes me rediscover songs that I heard a thousand times as if it’s new again. This song was high school for me, and everything you heard in the song was real to me then and still is. Even then I was working 2 jobs and busting tail to have something for myself, but more important was that peace of mind. If I could keep that, I’d be alright.
There was so much painstaking work put in by Tom to make this album in his basement with equipment he modified/fabricated. Being an amazing MIT engineer is why he had the ability and drive to make this masterpiece.
It's so strange to know this is new for you guys. I can't remember a time when this band wasn't on the radio or on my Playlist. Just remember summers at the pool and this song was everywhere! Great video! And I love Ryan's reaction. 💗 Great work guys!
I love Boston, this first album and the second are both amazing! Should do "Don't Look Back" from them next or "Smokin", "Rock n Roll Band", "Something About You" - they are all so good hard to pick 😂 ❤️
Man this takes me back 20+ years getting together with friends and my cousins and just having a good time tipping some back and listening to the radio on a Friday night
I did make the same association with corporate Rock but they emerged on the landscape when I was a young kid and it was one of my first major concerts in 1977 for this album to her and they sounded fantastic. The vocals were incredible it was in a small Arena and it was totally packed and they rocked really hard and it sounded so good.😮 it's just so ironic because it's the opposite of corporate where Tom scholz really had a chip on his shoulder about working with even a major California Studio that any other band would have killed to have done. And contrary to popular belief. It wasn't just Tom scholz although it was his Mastermind genius creation for sure. The guys that ended up helping them like Brad Delp in two different drummers and a bass player sometimes it's just amazing and I'm so happy that I was in 9th grade when they broke and had my first girlfriend and we got to enjoy all this stuff together and with our friends. It gives me no end to Delight to see y'all getting into it and really checking it out.
My father is a massive Boston fan. Grew up listening to them and they're still one of my all time favorite bands. Their songs take me to a whole other place.
You guys do great reaction videos. Just discovered this type of entertainment a few days ago. Now I know this reaction is 1 year old but I know exactly what you mean by wholesome. I say the same thing. Boston is just pure, crisp rock n roll. No muss, no fuss.
I heard this album at the age of 9, in 1975, and it was amazing even then. Scholz is a genius. On top of his musical ability, he literally invented some of the gear he used to record it. The Rockman pickup made him a much money as his music, and was a standard piece of gear for musicians for years. He famously said that he knew he had "made it" when he got a warrantee card from Eric Clapton. He also famously re-recorded the drum part because he didn't like the drums as they were played by the session musician he hired to do them. The only parts he didn't do are the vocals. He lied to the record label and sent a producer to LA to make it look like he was recording there, then tracked everything in his home. The drums were literally recorded in a closet. "Don't Look Back," the title track of their next album, is a monster. That album also has my favorite Boston song, "Man I'll Never Be," a contemplative, wistful song that helped me when a long relationship ended. Worth your time.
"Peace Of Mind" isn't on the level of "More" and "Longtime", but is better than most of Side 2. What you want next isn't "Rock & Roll Band" or "Smokin'" but rather "Hitch A Ride".
I was in my mid teens when Boston hit. NOTHING sounded like them before or since. The idiots who labeled them as the beginning of corporate rock were loser rock critics who were the ancestors of the cancel culture virtue signalers we have today. Is Boston my favorite band? No. But definitely in the top five. Their first two albums, on 8-track, were part of the soundtrack to our Senior class trip via school bus for roughly fifteen hours to Pensacola Beach. 😎
I like the way you guys analyze and assess songs from different genres than you're use to listening to..There are a lot of imitators out there who seem to be copying your format, but you guys are the real deal
Boston is phenomenal. I love the harmonies of the guitars and the vocal harmonies. Lead singer Brad Delp's voice is perfection. What a gift he had.. So much power and energy in the group's sound. Brilliant composition. And I kick myself not seeing them perform live when I had the chance.
Their second album is ALMOST as good as this one. "Don't Look Back" is the most popular on it, "Feelin' Satisfied" and "Party" are my personal favorites from it. "Amanda" is another of their most popular songs, I believe it's off their third album but I could be mistaken.
This is Eric from Mulligans Pub. As always, I enjoy the analysis from you guys. To add to your great analysis of this song, I have one thing to add……If you were to listen to this entire album in its entirety, listening to that album is like sipping a fine whiskey. This entire album is that smooth and great.
Just wanted to comment and say that y’all reallly changed my music perception I’m a young artist and just the variety of genres you guys are able to react too and break it down for someone whose not familiar is a blessing for people who can’t see it yet. I know y’all are working towards your goal and know this already but I love y’all and hope y’all never stop pushing keeep doing ur thing kings
