There are a few small differences between the two common types of shakers; the Boston glass & tin and the cobbler shaker.
I recommend the cobbler shaker for home use; ideal for making a single cocktail and has a built in strainer.
The Boston glass & tin is commonly found in bars; using the Boston glass makes it easy to see the ingredients as you add them and is ideal for faster paced environments as you can make multiple cocktails in the one shaker.
We have a range of equipment and bar tools ranging from basic to premium Japanese barware: cocktailkit.com.au

You mentioned in your book not to see this video. But I don't always listen 😉 So I had to check it out 😜 Congrats on the amazing year you're having. I hope you have time to enjoy it. I can see how the Boston shaker would be preferable in a busy bar, but I much prefer the Cobbler Shaker, I think they are easier to use and I find them much more comfortable. If you think about it a Boston is also a three piece shaker, since you're using a Hawthorne strainer most of the time, so not much more practical from a cleaning perspective either.

I like a large glass Kilner jar with shaker lid. It has the large volume of a Boston shaker, you can see if its ready (like with the foam of an espresso martini) but it's less likely to come apart than a boston shaker, yet also easier to open.

Hi Steve. I like the cobbler shaker, a small sized, and a large one. The boston looks nicer, but sometimes I give the small one to my "customers" to pour their own drink after I shake it.

Boston shakers are hard to come by in W.A.I finally have one now and it takes a bit of getting used to shaking it properly and separating the glass from the tin after shaking but IMO they are better if you're making anymore than 1 drink. I recently had a night where I was making cocktails for 6 people which meant cocktail after cocktail and removing the cap on the cobbler shaker was getting to be extremely hard especially after my hands had become cold.

I had no idea the names of the two. Learned something new today. I think I prefer the Boston shaker. Might need to get one on Amazon. Any thoughts on a video where you go over the basic bar equipment you recommend? We technically have a "home bar" and I'd like to make it a legit thing. Especially when we finally have friends over again soon. LOL.

If you need to get work done, if you need to bang out drinks on a busy night, then the Boston Shaker is the way to go. In fact, the cobbler shaker is only good for "appearances" in my opinion. I like watching japanese bartenders with them. The cobbler shakers just look very slick and refined, but you're not gonna be able to handle a large crowd in a work environment using them. If you can only use one, then there's really no difference in drinks using a boston+hawthorne and a cobbler, so just go with a boston shaker & hawthorne strainer. I have both, but I only use the cobbler at home when I feel like making a performance out of making a drink.
@alexryan2313
@alexryan2313 7 лет назад
I like the boston shaker more aswell, but i think there are some drinks witch are needed to be done with a cobbler shaker. The sherry cobbler for instance has even "cobbler" in the name :D . I like to use the cobbler most of the time when im goin for asian style drinks, like Bijou or Imperial Tokyo. Or when i work with sake. Because, in my opinion, sake works quite well with the bit more dilution style of the cobbler shaker than the boston shaker. But i guess, it´ll all come down to personal preferances :D

you want to be careful with cobbler shakers because you can end up getting some cheap clunky ones that just aren't good. My first shaker was a badly made cobbler. The one I use regularly is a cobbler shaker has a wood pattern on the outside and it works amazingly well I can get the lids off very effortlessly.

I got a fairly expensive cobbler when I started at home... It was expensive because it had a pretty paint job... I was crap and the seal was useless lol I prefer the Boston shaker, because there's more room in it, so it gets a better mix on. I use the cobbler though for shots, much easier with the built in strainer :)

First time going all the way back to the old videos and was shocked, SHOCKED, i say at the difference. How far you have come. On topic I tend to prefer a cobbler shaker in a bar environment but i also admit the drawbacks can be quite annoying since its much slower but if you are working in a craft cocktail bar instead of a busy normal(if such a term makes sense) bar that isnt so much a downside. But i also lean towards the japanese method of making drinks and paying close attention to what you are doing. Neither is right, i have been to busy bars who make great products and rely on speed but i personally prefer smaller more intimate craft bars such as the Varnish in Los Angeles or Bar Benfidditch in Tokyo.

A lot of the cocktail used to end up in cobbler shaker top. I'd remove the top and get cocktail all over the bar. I think the Boston shaker will eliminate that problem.

I use both but never the pint glass.I have personally seen my co worker use a pint glass for shaking and it shattered in his hand.Theres no guarantee that the pint glass you use it Tempered or not.I love Japanese style bartending and when I try to emulate the Japanese handshake I really believe that my drink is WAY colder.Idk when I was in bartending school I was told a drink needs to be shaken for 10-12 seconds to reach thermal equilibrium and that it has been tested with numerous styles of ice that you will reach the same temp no matter what

At the bar where I work a cobble shaker wouldn't do. The volume of different cocktails is too high to use the cobble shaker. On a slow night I would love to use a cobble shaker tho, since I won't need to hold the strainer with the fear of clumsy me dropping it.

Yes, you can use either type of shaker. The cobbler shaker is probably more common amongst beginners as it has the built-in strainer, making it really easy to use. Don't buy a cheapie though as they tend to not be well made and they jam a lot.
