I think there's countries that are promoting breeding with long nose breeds to correct the problem or only allow breeding of, say, pugs etc with longer noses to try and lengthen their snouts. Wish something similar would be done with dachshunds to lengthen their legs, thus preventing spinal collapse
@Nope-NotToday
@Nope-NotToday 3 месяца назад
@@wonky_shoebox7514 There are no money in promoting that. On the international stage, there are standards for each breed, and they will fall out of the standard and win nothing. This costs the breeders around the world millions, since they can no longer sell puppies after great winning parents. People will go elsewhere to buy the puppies. It causes great damage to the breeders

I never fails to shock me how we knowingly breed, buy, and promote brachycephalic pet animals: sentient creatures forced to continually feel the background panic of nearly (or literally) choking throughout their *entire* little lives. Just heartbreaking. All breeds with "characteristics" which in reality are these dangerous malformations and birth defects catastrophic to the animals' health and quality of life should be retro-bred back to their healthier origins at least and kept there under a penalty of animal abuse. It's just unacceptable for a pet animal to be born to choke - by our choice

That change needs to happen very soon since it takes a few generations and the longer it takes the more dogs are suffering. Sure they're cute but I think a dog that can breathe properly and can run around as much as they want is so much cuter. For me the worst part is that those dogs panic because they can't get enough air in, I know what that feels like but I also know what's happening and they don't which probably makes it much worse.

There are multiple veterinarians in my family, and if you want to set them off, all you need to do is mention breeding brachycephalic dogs. They find it unforgivably cruel, and I have to agree. Having a poor, innocent animal suffer all its life in order to provide someone (often someone shallow) with the 'cute' they desire is unacceptable. PS: Another aspect of breeding brachycephalic dogs is how often the size of pups' heads causes problems during whelping. It's shocking how many puppies must be born via caesarean section.

Just an FYI, Cassie was originally born into a breeding environment where she too was bred (early on - it would have had to have been her first season). Her belly has a large caesarean scar form that birth process - for the very reasons you point out. Sadly her genetics will have been passed on before she was later neutered (after she was under my care). She was passed on to a second family who had her for a year during Covid lockdown, which is when I come into the picture. She and I are both wonderfully happy together!!

Jenny did a great job in getting the lovely Cassie out of that horrible house and for providing her with the love and care that she deserves, and once Scott explained that the noises were not her communicating but actually struggling to breath she also got the medical help she needed to be able to live a healthy life. It was a really great idea to let Jenny witness the surgery and see the reality of the problem which gave a much more realistic perspective of the reason why poor Cassie was struggling so much to breathe that words can do. It was really good to see the before and after and easily tell what a great impact that the surgery would have for Cassie’s ongoing future 👍🏻. To see her racing around the park and thoroughly enjoying her life - and being able to breathe ! - was wonderful 😄🐶❤️. There definitely needs to be more control over the breeding of dogs and manipulating them to be how we as humans want them to look rather than how nature intended for them to be. For organisations such as crufts that are so big in the canine world to think that dogs bred like this is ok and let them win trophies for it is just beyond comprehension 🤬. Surely these organisations should have the welfare / health of dogs as a top priority and not looks 🤔. Hopefully people will begin to listen to the concerns raised by vets and focus on the welfare of animals first and foremost 🤞🏻🙏🏻 Dogs need to be able to breathe normally and not constantly feel in fear / not be able to live a normal existence due to problems we have caused 😢

It's not just dogs that suffer from this. Some Persian cats to do. A friend of mine rescued a Persian cat from similar circumstances as Cassie. The poor cat had the tiniest nose I've ever seen and associated breathing problems because of it. She was a really sweet cat. Unfortunately, because of her condition she had to go to the vets quite a lot. The cat passed age 17 but I have no doubt had it not been for the care my friend gave her cat, she would not have lived as long. In the end she passed with kidney failure and my friend was heartbroken. It really angers me that people breed these animals without a care for their health and welfare. These extreme breeds come about because some judge at a cat or dog show thinks a cat or dog with an extremely flat face looks good, makes it a "desirable" trait and people fall for it. It is the same with Siamese cats. Some are bred with huge ears that stick out of the side of their heads, making them look like an alien from another planet. To me, there is nothing nice about that. There is a documentary called Pedigree Dogs Exposed which deals with Syringomyelia in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and how German Shepherds were being bred with such a roached back that they could hardly walk - and one was crowned Champion at Crufts. You can find it on a website called documentaryheaven dot com but be warned, it is heartbreaking to watch.

The latest thing is the breeding of Arabian horses with super dipped faces that there is barely any nose left for the horse to breathe, not only does it look fake it also looks disturbing and you can see that the animal will struggle to breathe if you try to ride it for more than 20 minutes. Like you said, all this is being done because one judge likes the look, but what about the welfare of the animal that should always come first.

I’m so happy the vet has a way to make it easier for this pup to be able to breathe. The same problem occurs in cats. I had a Persian and it was sad. I was never offered a surgery by my vet. Maybe they didn’t do it back then. I had to clean his nose often (and the eyes also). He snored a lot. He would love it when I rubbed his nose. I guess it gave him some kind of relief. He lived to be around 14 years old. I guess it wasn’t so bad considering his condition. Since then I swore I would not adopt another breed. They are plenty of “ordinary” cats that need to be rescued and this is what I’ve been doing.

I've believed that brachycephalic breeds, both dogs and cats, have been shaped by humans to have terrible lives because they can't breathe properly. We humans are entirely to blame for this; these breeds used to have longer noses, and we've decided they look better with flatter faces with no consideration for their health at all. We're also responsible for breeding dogs like English bulldogs and pugs to be incapable of giving birth naturally because we've bred them to have such big heads with relatively small hips. I wish every breeder would start breeding to correct the damage we've done. We caused it; if we tried, we could fix it

This is such an important episode - thank you so much for highlighting this issue and doing it in a way that's non-judgmental towards owners of these breeds, while still hammering home why those with an understanding of canine anatomy are so concerned. Breeding animals needs to be regulated properly - backyard breeding is such a huge issue in this country. As a dog groomer I see the effects of it every single day, all the deformities it causes, and the owners who think the way their dog waddles or snorts is "cute" instead of a medical issue which needs to be addressed. I'm glad the lady in this video was open to learning and doing what was best for Cassy ❤

In Germany you can a fitness test. It's a treadmill-based test was developed to test brachycephalic dogs for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). It provides information about the presence of the disease, which can be used in therapeutic and breeding decisions. You then get an official certification of the test results. Some breed specific dog clubs, like the The Internationale Klub für Französische Bulldoggen e. V. (IKFB) (French Bulldog club) have specific rules about breeding and the VDH (the 'controlling' dog club for all breeds) have Breed-specific instructions regarding breeding-related 'over typification' in purebred dogs in their show rules, these rules included many other breeds, but of course also brachycephalic dogs. The sad thing is that reputable and ethical breeders will follow these rules and guidelines, but many others will carry on as usual, with no concern for the dogs they are breeding. I don't think banning is a solution either. As with all bans, the ethical people will stop doing it, but the people who don't care will continue illegally.

My niece had a German Shepherd with a very STRAIGHT back. The dog was a direct descendant of the Stasi dogs of the former East Germany. The American GSDs are also bred to breed standards rather than the dog’s health. The sloping back makes the American GSDs prone to dislocated hips and other orthopedic problems. A friend of mine breeds Shih Tzu. They’re adorable, but being short snouts their snoring makes me feel bad for the breed.

As a child who knew nothing about the breed's breathing problem, I did thought that he sounded uncomfortable. He did live until he was 18 and stayed by my Aunt's side through so many things. It would have been nice if sweet angels like Mercy and Cassie could live their entire lives not having to struggle to breathe. Thank you for making this long video. I'm so happy for Cassie and Jenny. Wishing you ladies great happy years ahead!

Thank you so much for bringing the awareness about flat face breeds, change begins with each of us by sharing this video. My neighbour has a dog making exactly same noises, same breed - the realisation came hard for me to know how much my neighbour dog Marcel has suffered his whole life- time to make life better for him! ❤️

That was wonderful for her dog to has that surgery done, poor little dog they could’ve choked to death. I think as human beings we should stop having animals that have flat noses that we were involved in. And have surgery so they can breathe better. I had a Persian cat that had a flat nose and a lot of problems.🦋💜

I have had 4 Boston terriers, my son 4 also and none of them suffered with breathing difficulties. It come from breeders who aren’t trying to get a flat face. The Boston on the show doesn’t look to have an awfully short muzzle so i wonder if she has an oddly large pallet. I’m glad she is better after the surgery. Sounds like she had a terrible start to life. You do need to watch their weight.

I've really enjoyed this video. I'm an absolute advocate of banning the breeding of these poor animals & that includes flat-faced cats. Why it's not against the law is beyond comprehension. The selfishness & cruelty of breeding for a certain look is appalling and legislation should be enacted and passed to stop breeders in their tracks. Thank you so much for showing this informative & VERY important video to the world. Cheers from Marcelle in Western Australia!

It's so important that poor breeding practices get called out. We should only be breeding animals for HEALTH, not for looks! In the end it's the animals that suffer. I hope there are more videos highlighting other breeds and poor breeding that has become standard. It all needs to stop!

Please be aware surgery can only help some brachycephalic pets but can't cure breathing difficulties, it may make them safer but please always be careful with them during hot weather, stressful conditions and exercise. You never want to see a dog die from respiratory distress, you never get over it and brachycephalic breeds are vulnerable, especially if they have BOAS, even mildly.

I really feel like the Kennel Clubs around the world should be more strict and vocal on the health issues that plague brachycephalic dogs. I feel the same way about the show standards for working dog breeds that cause severe hip issues. Show standards should not encourage the breeding of dogs that subsequently causes them to suffer severe health issues.

@@wendyblaauw2578 you are right, for the wrong reasons. One guy I know, he bred German shepherds, did leave when the new standards came in. He took two looks, he declared it was not in the interests of dogs. Turns out he was correct as Cruffs 2016 champ exemplified. These days he is happy as a clam breeding HEALTHY, intelligent, attentive, working line dogs… Some of his dogs have served with insert military or police here. He, and European working line dogs are the major sources, apart of what we also breed. None if those dogs could grace a show ring. However, they are used for what they were bred to do. Breeders of multiple breeds need to wake up. All their hubris is leading to very unhealthy animals. Brachiocephalic breeds are just the worse, more obvious. It should be classified as animal abuse. If you can’t tell, I have very strong feelings about this. When we were searching for a dog in 2019…my husband had fallen in love with pugs. They are adorable. So we went down and read on the breed…what we found left us in shock. We purposely adopted a special needs chihuahua mix…we sort of did not fully know what atopic dermatitis is. We are once again in search of a dog, with a good temperament, with potential to be trained as a service dog. There is a slew of breeds, or even mixes, we won’t take even a look at. Flat faced dogs is one of them. They are not healthy, and boy they have so many issues. If it takes governments, it’s starting, forbidding these dogs as animal abuse, so be it. Maybe increasing numbers of regulatory bodies around Europe, and now the US, will wake breeders up and they will start outcrossing these animals. Or, the breeds will go extinct. The fact they can’t deliver naturally should be the huge red blaring light for breeders. My brother was in that world when I was growing up, the show ring. He bred champion Great Danes…and boy the excuses breeders come with are just amazing.

Yea..I learned the truth myself a few days ago. I always wanted a french bulldog for years, but now I'll only take in a rescue rather than purchase from a breeder. After all, those ones are already born. Making dogs like these really should be considered animal abuse since this is just making them born to suffer, and just for pleasing humans.... Same for brachycephalus cats

@@noreenmary3300 cavaliers biggest issues are their brain conditions and their heart issues. But the can also have breathing issues and issues cooling down due to their shorter snout. My channel is a pug channel but I am an avid supporter of extensive health testing prior breeding. Sadly most healthtesting is volontary which means that many breeders do not test for conditions that are common amongs their dogbreed. There for I think it is better to make a breed specific govermental regulated program so dogs don't have to suffer. If Bracy dogs would be banned you still have the corgis disc issues, the doxins backproblems, the gene for epilepsy in standard and great poodles and so on. So banning one breed is not going to be a solution it is better to have legal requirement for breedspecific health screening 😊

@@noreenmary3300 I understand when we got our first pug I wanted a Bischon Frise but my boyfriend wanted a Pug, Cavalier, French bulldog or Boston Terrier. I knew that all these dogs had breed related health issues but French Bulldog had 2-3 times more healt related issues than pugs. 90% of all Cavalier have heart issues by 7-8 year old and brain issues are also really common. Cavalier's heart issues are dominant as well so no mix either. In Boston terrier they can also have issues with a too large brain for their skull so no thank you. It left us with the pug. So I did a lot of research and after several months we found a pug that met our citerias for healthy breathing, NP dangerous NME, patella free, hipdisplacia free and DM free and she also has healthy eyes. We struck gold and we now want there to be a universal healthprogram to eliminate the problems that some pugs have 😊. So it is great to adopt dogs too but me personally would only adopt a super mutt since the purebreed dogs that are adoptable usually aren't healthtested. On the flip side every dog deserves a loving home 🩷

Gad…we went to the pound two days in a row, after my rescue/service dog died on June 18…the local humane society was trying to push large dogs, no a husky does not belong in an apartment…and brachiocephalic breeds. I cannot abide by adopting these guys…they should be banned. It’s animal abuse. I was left with a very bad taste with my local humane (or is that inhumane) society. Their hard sale, car sales methods will get a lot of first owners into dogs that are not a good match. Thanks for what you do Doctor Scott. PS…after a good grieving period, I might adopt another dog. But not from the humane society PPS as a former medic that has entubated humans…the surgery (to save her life) makes all the sense in the world. Jeeze, I am in shock!

Kudos for continuing to stress the true inhumanity of some branches of dog breeding. We are appalled at the tradition of foot-wrapping to create "beautiful feet" and thus, "beautiful women" ... there's no difference in breeding dogs that cannot enjoy a full, healthy life due to physiological conditions. Perhaps LAWS need to be put into place in the US, Canada, UK, and other countries. How does one go about that?
