My father was a (pro) Big Band Drummer, in the late 40's / 50's .. He use to tell me about the Old Howard .. esp the Time he went back stage and talked with Louie Armstrong who gave him advice about perseverance & practice being being the key to making it ..
My dad grew up in the west end. He told me all about Scollay square. He was born in 1917.He did tell me about Joe Nemo, but left out the rest. I now know why he reveled about Scollay Square thanks to your video. Thank you so much for this and for sharing.
I've been there.......I lived it in the 1950's.......The Old HOWARD, the CASINO, JOE And NEMOS, The swarms of SAILORS, the ROAR of the GREASE-PAINT, the SMELL of the CROWD.......Gone forever........
Amazed what destruction American government has caused not only throughout the world but also a n our own cities and towns….yet we still want more of it??? Definition of insanity….
I tried to get into the Old Howard with some older friends when I was 15, but they wouldn't sell me a ticket so I went to a nearby movie house. I was approached by two men, one after the other, which scared the life out of me. When I left I imagined they had followed me and was even more frightened. Took me years to realize it was my imagination. (By that time, I was approaching boys in movie houses myself.) I got into the Old Howard a bit later, but truthfully can only remember the comics. This must have been in 1952.
reminds me of the old metropolitan in NY.As I got up to go to the mens room there a lad was busy ministering to the man seated in front of me but he seemed more interested in the kung fu movie playing than the bj he was getting! "Kick his ass!Thats it,kick his ass!......."

It's an interesting video...stopped watching a third of the way. But I'd like to say.... It's always nice to see things of the past. But what this video shows is that one thing hasn't changed and that is, the broken nature of man. To see these people talk about the stripping away of a woman's dignity as a fond memory is just sad. Call it burlesque, or whatever you want but it's just one thing in the end. Sad, dusty, death. Not life giving. But life destroying.
