So good to see Neville on the show!!! Big love to him. And loved this episode. Some fantastic books mentioned in this episode. Totally loved it. but how come no one mentioned FAIRY TALES!!! My first introduction to books was a HUGE book of fairy tales which my uncle gifted me when I was five. I couldn't read then but I loved to look at the illustrations in it. and I couldn't wait to read it. of course, I fell in love with each and ever story...especially the Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson. Other books thst I read growing up included the usual...famous five, harry potter, a lot of Nancy drew - so much so that I was barred from borrowing books from the school library because I spent more time reading 'storybooks' than actually studying! when I turned 15 or so I was addicted to James Patterson, Robin Cook and Christopher Pike. but I think the best chance discovery I made at the age of 15 was The story of a shipwrecked sailor by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. and my life changed after that because I suddenly discovered this amazing world of Magical Realism. I read all his books and also read other authors like Laura Esquivel and James Cañon. I think...If I had to recommend books to kids today...I'd start off with fairytales and then as they grow up I'd like them to read retellings of those fairy tales to get a completely different perspective on them. I love doing that. It helps you look at the world differently. but yeah...overall superawesome episode and Neville was amazing as always. its always a please to meet him and talk to him. cheers guys!

Neville Shah Spirit animal (n): A person whom you feel like you were meant to meet and realise that you should have been friends all along. Conversations with such a person range from mundane to epic, often unfiltered, crude and weird to people passing by, who should not be eavesdropping to begin with..... does that cut it Neville?? 😎

Absolutely loved my Enid Blyton (Famous Five, Five Find Outers and Dog, Secret Seven, St. Clare's and Malory Towers, Noddy- as a kid,) Amar Chitra Kathas and Mystery stories (Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot, Marple was boring), Sherlock Holmes, Satyajit Ray's Feluda series (!), Nancy Drew, Perry Mason and then classics such as, The Swiss Family Robinson, adapted Shakespeare, Little women (series of 4 books),Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Gone with the Wind (the only book that was not under lock and key during the 12th class), Jeffrey Archer, the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz and Percy Jackson. Still read and re read these (apart from the latter two) in my twenties as well, and would love more suggestions!! Also, I applaud these podcasts, I've grown up entrenched in books and this makes me so happy!!

I was fortunate enough to meet Ruskin Bond in Mussourie. We were on a school trip and were staying at the prospect lodge, which is very close to his place. Our principal invited him over to the lodge on the last day of the trip, he came with his dog. All kids had prepared little performances for him, and then we all had dinner together. This was back in summer, 2005.

Great BoTCast guys! Really Happy to have read all the books mentioned! Just a couple of my additions: Enid Blyton, that formed a lot of my early childhood. The other one is Amar Chitra Katha. While Tintin and Asterix impacted me greatly as well, Amar Chitra Katha was a really important aspect to understand India.

I somehow felt bad when Sherin did Chhi chhi to Munshi Premchand.... 2 things, You don't like it... its ok... you can't like everything... but do not insult a legend like Premchand. And you know Munshi Premchand wrote very realistic life stories. He wrote a lot of stories based on indian families and people and how they used to be in the time he was present.

Hi Shreya, the intention was not at all to insult Munshi Premchand. It's like you said, everyone can't like everything. We were forced to read his stories in school, but in my opinion, there were better writers and storytellers in regional - like Manto, Harishankar Parsai, Rajinder Singh Bedi. They wrote on topics that I deeply resonated with.

There were also six wonderful books by Agatha Christie that she wrote under the pseudonym of Mary Westmacott. They were called 'Love Stories With a Jagged Edge'. Really interesting and unconventional.

Just the amount of recommendations you guys give is blowing my mind. I almost jumped at the mention of Ruskin Bond and Roald Dahl as they are my favourites mainly because they have written from both sides of the spectrum and spectacularly so. One of the books that I enjoyed the most was Heidi and Anne of Green Gables, hope you guys can add them next time.

My favourite books to read while growing up were Charlottes Web, The Railway Children and the What Katy did series...Charlotte's Web taught me so much about friendship! If you guys like Alistair Maclean type books, you must try Tightrope Men by Desmond Bagley. Read it in my teens and i really liked it. BTW the show is really good and my friends kept recommending me to watch it. Really loved all the episodes i have seen so far. Would love to hear about regional language books from you people. I loved Catcher in the Rye. and old man and the sea. and I've had the same experience with my whole family laughing there head off at Wodehouse and then being totally clueless and going "whyyyy ye to weird hai" . we also had tiger in the tunnel in class 10 and then when we had a teacher called maam tagore and we just atarted calling her tiger in the tunnel because we were stupid shits. this episode was sooo relatable . the whole amar chitra Katha and phantom. I want to be a lawyer because of John Grisham ka Theodore boone . and Perry mason has there on my TBR and because of an earlier episode I ended up buying the entire " No 1 ladies detective agency " this botcast addiction is not good for my pocket money, it flies . TKAM ka exam hai mera Monday ko . gosh it's awesome. and neville's golden trio of books is amazing. Yeh bohot accha botcast hai ♡ I had been waiting for Catch 22 to be brought up. guys call anuja chauhan on your show na. her new book is also about to release and she's so witty!
