This movie is spot on the character of most Chinese in China n around the world. Mercenary, selfish, lacking in backbone, never accepting their responsibility for their evil deeds but projecting blame on others: n as to filial piety shown in this movie is a myth especially in a China that even took out the character of the heart in the word love. And, even those that are not rich themselves would also look down on those less fortunate than themselves. Alas, I watch these kind of movies bcos I still live in hope that filial piety still does exist n that good will always overcome evil. However, not to the extent that they turn sons into mummy's boys. That would be equally destructive.

I liked this movie. However, at 1st I thought it had too much violence toward the mom, and not enough time spent on the daughter. Then I realized this was the mom's story. All the humiliation & pain she experienced was due to the sexism against women she believed, and in the end acted on. This is seen when SHE, not the in-laws not the dad who is dead, the MOM decided to ignore the sons moral failings and helped him cheat (by giving him a magnet to hold to get the metal to point to him) so he would get to go to college. Note from that night we jump 10 years ahead and that means the son even after school, for 6 more years hasn't supported the mom! What is wilder, because the son called the mom to say don't come to the wedding, he has been in contact with her the whole time and probably is still getting money from her!
