All hunting was banned in Botswana from 2014-2020. After 7 years, the restrictions were lifted and Mark Peterson is among the first to be there and hunt an Elephant. This hunt took place in April of 2021 and is a true conservation success story about the Botswana elephant populations and the local economies that have suffered as a result of the hunting ban, until now. This is a true field to table experience in a country where people depend on hunting and there's more to it than you think. This is the truth about hunting in Botswana.

@@broflo3875 If it was only for sport for foreigners, why would Botswana allow it? The motivation of the hunter is irrelevant aside from the fact if he got nothing from it the hunt wouldn't be done. The primary reason this hunt was done was because elephant numbers had been increasing beyond safe carrying capacity during the ban and local people were having crops destroyed and sometimes were killed by marauding animals. Jobs, meat, taxes and sometimes revenue sharing are other benefits to the people, community and country. I don't hunt but understand why it is needed. Their country, their decision. Our opinion doesn't and shouldn't count. I wrote that before I watched all the video. The meat distribution near the end and the words of the local guy starting around 19:00 are worth catching. They are the most important players here, to me.

As natives of Botswana we are not allowed to hunt and it pisses me off because foreigners just come and kill our animals as they please. If you go to this areas where there's a lot of animals you will find out that most of the lodges,camp sites, hotels and game reserves or parks are controlled by the foreigners. Our country Botswana is in the hands of the rich..we ordinary folks aren't even allowed to own a rifle,,they say you should apply for a firearm permit after that a classic yes or no raffle decides whether you get the permit or not

I totally understand and support the economic benefit of bringing foreign dollars to the local economy and ecosystem through hunting tourism. My question is (and this is a sincere question): why are the locals waiting 7 years for the Americans to shoot the elephant in order to eat. Considering the abundance of meat in the overrunning of the area by elephants, why aren’t there local efforts to procure meat for the starving population by the local government? Doesn’t make sense to me. I’m seriously not trying to sound negative, just trying to understand the dynamic.

Very good question, and from what I saw, this is the best that I can answer. In Botswana, people can now hunt for subsistence (they could not during the hunting ban from 2014-2020). However, when talking about the people of these remote villages, the challenge is acquiring a rifle. They can't just go to a Cabela's and buy one. Yes, the hunts cost money to out of country hunters and the villages see some of that money, but with so many hunters to contribute wild game anyway, why spend it on hunting rifles. Second, when an "outfitter" acquires a concession, they have a contract with the Botswana government that a percentage of the meat is to be distributed among the villages inside their concession boundary. In this case, there were 6 villages in the concession and we were required by law to distribute 80% of the meat. Hope this helps, and thank you for the question.

How many elephants are killed each year in Africa? From over 100 seizures made in the continent in the last 15 years, almost 465,000 pounds of ivory were recovered. That translates into the deaths of over 30,000 elephants. But this hasn't dampened the illegal trade in ivory. Tens of thousands of elephants are lost every year; one killed every 15 minutes.

Cool how you feed the village. If they could get the poachers, it would allow more hunting. They need a helicopter with infra red, and just kill the poachers.

Many hunters reder to their blood lust for killing as "population control". Some of them even call them "nature conservationists". They say they help nature keep a healthy balance. If that's the case then genocide must be a humanitarian aid. these hunters are driving these animals to extinction. these hunters gotta go

The over -population of elephants around Chobe has led to the destruction of the riverine vegetation. This in turn has led to the habitat of the Chobe bushbuck being destroyed and could possibly lead to extinction of this antelope.

There is currently a surplus on a private reserve in South Africa and the land owners have offered them up free to whoever is willing to relocate and is qualified to care for them. They contacted clebrities who claimed to be concerned directly but anyone could apply. So far no takers. So hunters will likely be shooting them starting in May. Could some stay at your house?

Great that elephant hunting has returned to Botswana, they need to harvest them as great as they are. Good to hear the locals say it the way it is and hopefully the “greenies” listen to the reality! No disrespect - merely a comment - my father law was an African outfitter for 50 years and I remember how they never took an elephant less than 80lbs a side. Now we need to breed back those genes and get some 100lbs roaming the Savannah. The behemoths that Selby, Selous and Ruark hunted.
@MarkVPeterson

I can only image the caliber of animals at that time. From what I saw, this place has the potential to produce them again and there is no mistaking the age of elephants once they reach that stage.

All the naysayers in the USA should have to watch this video. It explains elephant hunting as necessary for the good of the people that live in Africa, as well as controlling herd size so the locals are not overrun with them. Nothing goes to waste when they harvest an elephant and a lot of people get protein they otherwise would not have. When it comes down to it, people are more important than elephants, not the other way around as people against hunting would want you to believe. Hats off to everyone involved as this video explains it very clearly.
