In the series “Tales of people with a visual impairment around the world”, today's spotlight is on Botswana. The focus is on Junior and his mother Opelo, Tloto and Ms. Majama.
Their stories highlight resilience, determination, and support in the face of visual impairment, showcasing the individuals' abilities to overcome challenges and excel in their education and daily lives.
Junior, a 7 year old boy living with albinism is a bright student in standard 1, demonstrating a strong interest in education from a young age. Despite facing stigma due to his albinism, Junior receives unwavering support from his mother. To enhance his vision, Junior uses enlarged text at school. His mother empowers him to stay focused, accept himself, and excel academically.
Tlotlo, is 18-year-old boy, in 2011 he suddenly lost his sight. Despite this, he remains firm and assertive in dealing with bullying at his senior secondary school. He utilizes low vision devices such as a white cane for mobility and magnifiers and assistive technologies, to aid in his school work.
Ms. Majama is a blind teacher at a primary school catering to learners with vision impairment. Besides focusing on academic performance, Ms. Majama and her colleagues empower the students by teaching daily living activities and fostering independence. They provide orientation and mobility skills, encouraging the students to be self-sufficient.

Hij gebruikt hulpmiddelen zoals een geleidestok voor mobiliteit, een leesloep en ondersteunende technologie, om hem te helpen bij zijn schoolwerk.
Mevrouw Majama is een blinde lerares op een basisschool voor leerlingen met een visuele beperking. Majama en haar collega's richten zich niet alleen op academische prestaties, maar empoweren de leerlingen ook door hen dagelijkse levensactiviteiten aan te leren en hun zelfstandigheid te bevorderen. Ze bieden oriëntatie- en mobiliteitsvaardigheden en moedigen de leerlingen aan om zelfredzaam te zijn.
