Great video John, really enjoyed it. Beautiful spoon like forms, the crank you put in those would perform well in the form of a spoon too! Very pleasing to see them take shape in such a relaxed, confident manner.
look forward to seeing that! I'd happily send you something for inspiration if you like! Just let me have your mailing address (drop me a message on instagram) and I'll pop something in the post for you.
Hi. I really enjoy your videos. I have been watching them so much my wife has been complaining. Really she don't mind, but I have caught up in watching them. I have learned a lot and I anticipate when you post new ones. Thanks, Terry from South Georgia.
It’s interesting that you don’t have to harden the opening and the point that pops the top. I have a very cheaply made opener at home that constantly bends. I’ve never used a hand forged opener, I’ll make one for the house though! Thank you
Yes, as you said at the end, I have just watched this video long after Christmas. The beauty of Christmas is that we have one every year..... so I still have time to make some 😊
Very nice I got to watch this the second time and I hope I got the right notes taken this time. You are a blessed man thank you merry Christmas be blessed
Those are a great idea for a shop ruler. After watching John's video, I picked up small square and made one. Use it all the time now. For stuff under a foot long, it's much easier to use than a tape measure.
I've watched many of your videos..I enjoy them a lot. You are a very good instructor for me. All that being said.. even though I enjoyed this video it seemed you were rushing these projects. I'm guessing it is not your favorite piece to make..lol.
Great tip on correcting an offset punch! I love that tip, but I think I'd have necked the handle in before drifting the eye open, while the bar is still manageable
We have a whole box of that size/thickness metal at my job and some even have a small hole in them already so punching a hole will be already started,im going to ask tomorrow for a few of them though no one has used them in about 8 years.Maybe they will let me have the whole box! I want to master these types though because i been making the other style in which is like fish tailing a end out some and doing a simple curl at the end, though fun,i rather do the ones you introduced.
first, I love all your videos, especially the one on punching and drifting as well as this one. But i envy your L shape scale or ruler. I see you use it often and it seems so handy. does it have a name, or do you know where I can order one?
I haven't. A fixed version similar to a Swiss army knife might not be bad. But the little folding one I carried on my key ring might be a hard thing to make work.
That is a name I have often heard used to describe the stamped out bottle openers with a punch type can opener on one end and the bottle opener on the other end. Although I think the name originates from an opener more like the one in the video because the fing resembles the handle end of a large key.
My dad (he was born in 1940) told me that beer cans, Coke cans too as far as I know, didn't have pop tops at first and the pointed end was meant for them. One or two punches to drink from and one in the opposite side for air to enter the can. I think the whole church key thing was meant as a joke in that if you used the opener enough, you needed the Lord's help and thus a key into the church.
okay I do the same thing punch the hole then the back side looks a lil gnarly. I smash it flat back down. but it doesn't look pretty after I have to grind. Drawing out over the horn takes several heats. 2x it ended up too big. Then right size. but the lip technique did not really get results the lip portion did not come out properly it just kept squashing and didn't really come out like in the video. I watched it 5 times now. ugh..
