Thanks Eric, I spent several hours with a orbital sander attempting to sand off the oxidized paint of my 26' S2. After several hours of limited success and being covered in a blues dust I felt that there had to be a cleaner easier method. Thanks for the suggestion.

What a labor of love--that is a truly LUCKY BOAT! Thanks for showing how to do this. Too many you-tube tutorials leave out the gritty details, but I think you covered them wonderfully. Someone with NO experience stripping ancient crusty old bottom paint gets the full instruction. Looks like it takes forever, but then I realize you're doing just a test patch first, in real time, it is fast! or the normal pace of working. Video 2 is hilariously rapid. looking forward to watching your other videos, since this one that goes slow enough to actually teach.

It took about a week to do, about 3 hours a day. Paint that was above the actual water line was hard as a rock, I had to sand that off. Thanks for the complement! Part two has the full removal and painting finish.

I am using Citristrip to remove a water based ablative bottom paint off our Nor'sea 27. I bought a quart to just try to see if it would work. Have to say I'm impressed. I used a brush at first, let the gel sit for about half hour then scraped off the paint. I rinsed with water which left a blue haze behind. I then read the instructions which says to wipe it down with mineral spirits. Mineral spirits got the blue haze off and left behind pretty much white gel coat. Still have to run over the bottom with 80 grit. Did switch over to a foam roller. The citristrip dissolved the foam roller. I'm guessing based on the area done with a quart, a gallon will do the bottom .

Jerry English I used a roler made for chemicals like for contact cement.

Looks like it worked well. Might have to consider that for next season.

That looks effective for vertical surfaces but I don't think it would do for a power boat hull where a lot of it is directly overhead with you laying under it. Still looking for a good answer on that. At one time a few years ago they were touting a 'planer' that was designed not to take any gel coat. Haven't seen anything recently on that. Take care. Doug

Eric, looked everywhere for advice on a sailboat cutlass bearing... thanks. Also found your demo of citristrip intriguing .. intend to try it.

So after first application, you reapply stripper with scouring pad and scrape, then what is it you are washing it with? Thanks for the vid.

Fugitive Irons use of the scouring pad after scraping off most of the paint. Use the scouring pad with the cleaner to remove small amounts that you cannot get off with the putty knife. The cleaner is water-soluble. Clean it off with water. Water will stop the stripping action of the cleaner

Does anyone know how much product was used for the whole boat? I would like to strip a Nonsuch 30 that has a lot of old bottom paint. Very good video. Thank you.

I think the info is in the video someplace. I used 3 gals. It comes in 1/2 gal jugs. But I would start with one 1/2 gal and do a test to make sure it will work for you like it did for me. And I was able to reuse the plastic sheeting many times over. The trick is to keep the stripper wet long enough for it to penetrate the paint. I left it on overnight. Also there is a part 2 that shows the entire job done. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b_ozSTnEQO0.html

Nice and informative video.. just bought a boat with old horrible bottom paint, need to remove or fix and reapply.. this looks easier and cleaner than many other methods.. I'm hoping I'll be pleased with what I find under the paint.. I'm a newbie.. after removing everything, I should be able to just sand up to a high grit and buff, then hopefully just wax? I'm in freshwater and going to trailer.. any pointers would be appreciated.. again, great video, cheers!

How did your boat turn out? I am stripping a sailboat now and also in freshwater and trailering, hoping to do the same,just buff and wax. I hope to hear back from you.

I read the Citristrip label and it said not for fiberglass. Bummer. I called the parent company who recommended Cleanstrip Aircraft paint remover.

You said it work better hot weather
@MafiaRadio2020MISC

No, just the opposite. You need to keep it wet overnight with the plastic. Heat should not be an issue as long as you cover it with a plastic as soon as possible to keep it wet. And you’re working under the boat, in the shade. Cooler would be better. But I don’t believe he is a real issue.

Didn't work on my boat
@MafiaRadio2020MISC
@MafiaRadio2020MISC 6 лет назад
It may not work on epoxy paints and barrier coats. Also, if the paint has fully dried, like for a few years. The paint above the actual water line was hard as a rock. I will revise my description to exclude those paints.

Hire a dustless sandblasting machine and the bottom paint will come off of that boat within 4 to 6hrs.
