I had a Kemper for the last 5 or so years and actually just sold it. I found myself getting option paralysis with it at times with huge amount of available profiles and would spend more time scrolling through profiles than actually playing. I also kept going back to the same profile as my “go-to” so actually just got that amp instead (Marshall Silver Jubilee) as it was clearly what I like, a decision I do not regret 😂 For live use though the Kemper was amazing, weighs next to nothing and plugs straight into the front-of-house so you’re plugged in and ready to go in under 90 seconds. And anyone who says they can tell the different between the Kemper and a real amp in a live setting is just not being honest
@alexradsby
@alexradsby 2 года назад
This is how I will use it anyway. Find amps I like then buy the real thing. I definitely have a preference when it comes to amps. Since I got the kemper I've only used a Bad Cat Panther & a Friedman BE-50 haha. Option Paralysis is definitely a thing though, Kemper is easier to me when it comes to that but the Line 6 Helix was even worse with all it's additional amp settings for Sag etc etc. Drowned in options.. 😅

This is exactly the same experience I had with helix. I spent hundreds of hours trying different amps, IRs, etc, then I got the powercab which just added another layer of complexity. What I really need is just something that sounds good from the off. I sold my Helix recently. I haven't fully decided to go with Kemper yet but it's something I'm strongly considering. Im especially interested in the powered Kemper so i can use a proper guitar cab

I don't own any of the profiling tools, having adopted ampsims and standalone distortion pedals full time. But I think the Kemper is probably the most used and overall best sounding. There will always be exceptions like very stiff amps or fuzzy tones, etc.... But every profiler has shortcomings. I 100% agree on no touch screen. The Cortex would probably be in my hands already but I hate touch screens. Buttons and knobs for physical gear will always appeal to me more. Great perspective and explanation :)

I'm totally with you... I had a Helix for a long time, upgrading my Pod XT. I used it as a) a 4-Cable Method effects processor with a valve (tube) amp, and b) a backup amp. At home, I spent months, if not years, trying to get great tones that would work live. I also got a Kemper Powerhead for experimentation, home recording (that was a revelation), because I was intrigued by the concept. I didn't have the courage to take it out live. That was a big mistake. My valve amp failed me on an outside gig once, and my carefully crafted Helix settings sounded, well, disappointing. I finally took the plunge and, armed with some fabulous profiles of a Friedman I purchased for next to nothing, I am happier with my tone now than I ever was with the expensive valve amp (Mesa Boogie MKV). Mainly because the amp reacted in the same way, wherever I played it, and at any volume. I stopped tweaking and started playing a lot more. I finally sold my Helix and bought a second Kemper (Stage).

I’ve had the kemper for a few years and recently got an HX stomp and I’m very conflicted, I never bought into the helix because I bought a POD HD a year before the helix was released so I decided to boicot line 6 and get a kemper instead. I feel the kemper is as good as the profiles you get, you can run thru 100 crap profiles before you hit a good one, but when you find it it just sounds great! I have to agree that after finding profiles I liked I played more and tweaked less. Now where the kemper sounds more “mix ready” or refined I feel the HX stomp sounds more natural. It took me a while to get sounds I was happy with in the HX stomp, but now I feel I enjoy the HX stomp more than the kemper because it gives me more control of my tone instead of relying on other peoples profiles. In the effects department the kemper is ok, it will do the job, but line 6 effects are miles away from what the kemper offers. Form factor is another thing I enjoy about the HX stomp, it fits on a small pedalboard with a few complementary pedals, I got a powered kemper that I bought with the intention of powering a cab on stage, but as time passes it is less and less frequent that I’m allowed to have a cab on stage. Ive debated if I should sell the kemper and get a tube amp for the strange occasion when I can bring an amp to a gig or rehearsal, and depend on the hx stomp for all the silent stage and practice scenarios. Plus the thing is more than 10 years old, I’m afraid kemper might release something new soon and the value of my kemper will drop like crypto 😂 Enjoyed the video. Subscribed.
@alexradsby
@alexradsby 2 года назад
You bring up some super valid points! Can't argue with how good the hx stomp is. Im seriously thinking of buying one just to have extra effects. Such a good unit! I think I just fatigued after a while tbh. Will definitely make a tone comparison video at some point. I have a lot of custom IRS I'd like to try out for the Helix. Still havr Helix Native so might try that out soon 🙂 Thanks for commenting! I really appreciate it!

Unfortunately the HXStomp is very limited in the DSP department, I’d get the boss gt1000 core if form factor is an issue. I have both the Kemper and the GT-1000 Core, I prefer my Kemper but like to use the Core on a pedal board with my valve amps. I used to use a helix floor for about six years, I buy profiles from tone junkies or Michal Brit etc so don’t waist time searching for great profiles.

My take on your points: 1. Sounds great out of the gate- nope, you need to find a good preset as with most modelers etc. 2. tweeking- once you understand your new device, you can create a preset (or download one), tweek it minimally and just use that preset (and a couple more) forever, like me and others do. I have my main presets and don't need anything else, other for fun.
@alexradsby
@alexradsby 3 месяца назад
I agree with you. That said. I never used presets on Helix, always buildt mine own rig because it was a modeller, compared to a Kemper and adding profiles. It only has profiles so, it's basically set and go. Don't think I've ever tweaked a profile, I have however tweaked the effects if the profile had any. I definitely did the same thing as you. Used 2 profiles and then the rest was for fun and learning how new amps sound etc. But I sold the Kemper in favor of the real amp after a while too, Kemper for me was a great learning tool about amp characteristics so now I own a Bad Cat Black Cat instead haha.

I had a Helix when I was still using valve (tube) amps, because it acted as an excellent (if expensive!) pedalboard and also a backup amp, through a Headrush speaker. However even after paying for patches I couldn't get a convincing sound and feel. Also, the only way to avoid latency when changing patches was to create a single patch with a complex signal chain and use Snapshots. I then got the Kemper, and for the longest time I didn't use it live... big mistake. It sounds awesome into my PC at home, but powered through a standard speaker cabinet, it was like night and day vs. the Helix. And I finally found the tones I was looking for, for years. No latency, and the updates are regular and free, with no need to buy new gear. I sold the Helix and got a second Kemper.

@iansimmons735
@iansimmons735 2 года назад
@@alexradsby Hi, it really does depend on what you play and what your criteria are... I wanted to save my aging back from lugging too much gear around, so I got a super-light Matrix Neolight NL212 (2x12). which weighs in at only 13.5Kg (30lb). It sounds fabulous and surprisingly massive through that. But you can of course put it through almost any standard speaker cabinet, using normal speaker cables. Of course, the sound of a profile through a standard cabinet will be different to the sound of the Main Out, because normally you would disable the cabinet sim to the speaker or monitor, while leaving it on when sending to the PA. My second Kemper is a Stage, however, and not powered. I was attracted to the Kemper Powered Kabinet, so I got one, which uses Monitor Out instead of Speaker Out. This can act as FRFR or with Speaker Imprints (so NOT FRFR, more like amp-in-the-room). However it would be redundant to have a powered Kabinet if you already have a power amp built in, which it sounds like you do. So maybe you could look at the Kemper Kabinet, which is not powered, but will also take speaker imprints from the Kemper. Both Kemper products use Imprints. These are like IRs but without the mic, so they sound more 'real' - so they emulate one of 19 common speakers (Vintage 30s, Celestion various, many others) You can set a Global Imprint as a default and vary the speaker imprint by rig. It's also worth remembering that the Kemper has a Power Amp Boost - this increases the level of output to the speakers. It also has a wattage meter so you can check it's not sending too much power out., though you'd really have to be going for it if you did!
@alexradsby

Hi dude. I have some amps and I reference everything through two notes captor x as it’s much more practical for how loud I drive my amps etc. can I make profiles with amp into the captor x? Also can you blend amps and make one profile?
@alexradsby
@alexradsby Год назад
I think you actually can plug the output from the captor into the return Kemper to make profiles. I haven't tried it myself though. It is possible to make 1 profile using 2 amps + 2 cabs + 2 mics. As well as having two amps running into the same cab but then you need to make sure each amp go to a different speaker i believe. You can't blend two already made profiles either sadly. That would actually be a nice feature for Kemper but I don't think it's possible for them to make it happen. Kemper is fairly primitive that way. It profiles 1 amp and cab.
@TinoSchulz1990
@TinoSchulz1990 2 года назад
One thing that (i think) nobody mentions is the gap between preset-changes. Can you demonstrate it? Like: Playing a chord and switching between presets while the chord is still playing. Is it completely gapless? Because that's also one thing that annoys me on the helix. (Yeah.. it's got snapshots, but let's face it..to go from a chorussy clean roland jazzcombo sound to a metal sound with delay and reverb isn't really possible with the helix's cpu..)
@alexradsby
@alexradsby 2 года назад
I think performance mode on the kemper makes it possible to switch between 5 presets gapless at the time and delay + reverb spill over. So I would assume you set it up song by song. I don't have a kemper footpedal so I can't demonstrate it. But I will definitely buy one as soon as possible so I can try these things out and review it.
@TinoSchulz1990
@TinoSchulz1990 2 года назад
@@alexradsby I would love to setup song by song, however our bands setlist changes a lot and we often switch out songs, depending on the mood of the crowd. So i'm thinking of a 5 preset "bread&butter" setup. 1-Clean, 2-Crunch, 3-Rhythm, 4-Lead, 5-Mute And keeping the rest of the banks for special songs that i can access quickly when needed. Could you maybe record a demo , demonstrating the gapless switching, while you switch the preset on the kemper itself (with the buttons)? That would be very helpful as i'm just about to bite the bullet to order the kemper stage, IF it's really gapless :D

I think this video clears most things up: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VaPWmikqHkM.html You can do a lot of things with the Kemper. 5 presets with gapless switching, each preset you can stomp twice to change values. Like increase gain etc. Plus you have 4 stomp boxes for effects to toggle on/off for each preset as well. I can possibly try to shoot a quick thing to demonstrate it. The tones themselves in Kemper are great but the response is just ok. Same with all the other digital stuff. To me sansamps remain the better option. A big reason is the simplicity - even more simple than an actual amp and there's non of this A to D and D to A conversation going on in that its analog. Sound is highly complex and to me the digital stuff is only as good as the algorithms and the people behind them. Meanwhile the Tech 21 guys have been working on this stuff longer than anyone i can think of. The current gen sansamps are amazeballs in my book.

I’ve owned all the expensive modelers. All good in their own way. For me Fractal FM3 and Kemper are a coin flip. I am similar to you in that I hate tweaking. For the Fm3 between the presets and scenes I can always find something good... same for the Kemper. If the preset isn’t good... I simply move on. I used to spend hours tweaking and have since abandoned that approach as there are so many good tones there... easier just to pick what sounds good. With my helix... stock presets simply aren’t good enough... which means tweaking...

Haha yes we are definitely the same! I do the same thing for kemper. If it doesn't sound good out of the gate, then i definitely move on. I don't have time or the motivation to endlessly tweak the presets/profiles to make it sound decent. I would love to try the Fractal FM3!

I have the Hekix and the Kemper. The helix amp models are garbage in comparison. Helix has the edge on the effects (apart from the dirt as Line6 seem to be incapable or a decent dirt fx). The Kemper effects have improved a lot over time too.

The double tracker the Kemper added not too long ago was a game changer for me. I usually use a tc mimiq but this Kemper one is really well done. I’m glad they didn’t put a trashy low effort one in when they added it. I can actually use it with very professional results, better than the Mimiq I think too. I have nothing against the helix and enjoy it, but the Kemper really is amazing for my needs and I’m glad I got it.

Yeah i definitely would go with a Kemper and if you want additional effects get a hx stomp or just normal pedals. 🙂

For me at the price point it sales for why not just spend a little extra and get a Quad Cortex. Kemper is too old for that price point

I got this one used. And the quad cortex have the same tweaking abilities that the helix has. I like kemper mainly because I don't tweak much, that said. I will probably pick up a quad cortex in the future

Tried both for a year and went with Helix in the end. Gear paralysis and mediocre effects with Kemper...

I totally understand your decision! How do you run your kemper? Original amps with cabs or custom irs? 🙂

The reason why people think the Kemper sounds better is because the Kemper cabs are basically real guitar cabinets, if you run a Kemper straight into a pa system it's gonna sound just as fake as all the other modelers. If your run the helix without cab sims into a power amp and then real guitar cabs, it sounds phenomenal

Now this I believe! But that's the reason why Kemper introduced the Kemper Cab & Cone right? I've never actually played my Kemper or my Helix through real cabs. It would be super interesting to hear!

@@alexradsby unless I'm playing church music, I never run direct with helix. I use a Duncan power stage power amp into mesa cabs. Barely have to tweak anything. Pick an amp, adjust gain and volume , that's about it, just make sure your not using any cab sims cause then it will sound crummy

Ah that's really cool man! would love to test that out at some point. 🙂 thanks for the advice & new knowledge!
