A top quality piece of Queensland boulder opal results in a beautiful clean/full faced gem... what a surprise. Sometimes you just need to hunt down some high quality rough opal to make you life easier and less stressful.
It took quite some time to shape this one with the Dremel/rotary tool but it was definitely worth it.
When it comes to boulder opal Nick Hoops is your man!

That is a stunning opal. Claw set in a ring, it would be a welcome adornment to any hand. If it was ever a giveaway, I would just ask how big a bribe you would need!!!!!!! Lol. It really is a great looking stone. I had no idea that boulder opal could look like that. (I still like the veined types though). I hope your day turns out as good!
@RoysRocks
@RoysRocks 3 года назад
Morning Nancy. You are spot on. I reckon this one demands a claw setting too! It is quite an unusual colour in boulder. Normally it's more milky and cloudy which is never that exciting.

Yeah a tad unusual just because of the almost Coober Pedy appearance in a boulder opal. Doesn't happen all the time that's for sure.

The body tone and the colors kind of remind me of Lambina.... Awesome piece!

Yeah it is very reminiscent of lambina. Rare that this body tone turns out well with boulder. Typically too cloudy.

Hey thats awesome, what glue did 6ou use on the dop and how did you remove it. Bloody rippa boulder
@RoysRocks
@RoysRocks 3 года назад
This one I think I used superglue (medium thickness) and removal is the same as epoxy. I just leave it in water for a while after polishing it. Superglue gives up pretty quickly in water but I know some go with acetone to speed it up.

The point in your video where the stone transitions from a diamond shape to a teardrop is helpful to watch. Having the stone dopped helps with symmetry?
@RoysRocks

It helps with control for sure. You can also see it with your fingers or if the way so yeah it does help a bit.

When your parcels (or single rough) come out what do you think will be the lowest price point? (CAD)
@RoysRocks
@RoysRocks 3 года назад
Im not really a sales person so I'll probably only sell beginners rough with a sandpaper kit or something like that. Aiming for about $50-100 AUD wish is similar to CAD from memory.
@grant.0
@grant.0 3 года назад
@@RoysRocks I think you should have sandpaper as an extra for people who already have some sandpaper etc. Like as a $5 option or something like that!
@RoysRocks

Oh yeah not all will have sandpaper. I hope many will have their own flex shaft to really get going. Many probably with better equipment than me!
@BenHunter818

How much would a piece like that cost?
@RoysRocks
@RoysRocks 2 года назад
Since this video prices have deffinetly gone up but this was part of a parcel so it was already a heavy discount. From Nick Hoops I think you can still expect a piece like this for under $50. Full faced stuff can be pricey or just not sold though.

did you dop with super glue with this one

You think it looked better in rough form with ironstone spots all over it? Suit yourself. Its increased value would say otherwise and now it can be set in a piece of jewellery.
