The Boulder Skyline Traverse is a 18+ mile trail run with at least 6,000ft of elevation gain. This is a classic trail that summits South Boulder Peak, Bear Peak, Green Mountain Peak, Flagstaff Mountain and Mt Sanitas. Its a tough day but a very fun route. This was filmed in late April.

FKT for South Boulder via Shadow Canyon is a mind boggling 41:58, and that was done while attempting the traverse fkt...not even like a siloed attempt. Took me 42 minutes to do the 2.5 miles to the _base_ of Shadow Canyon's single track with still so much to go to the peak. Absolutely wild what people can accomplish.

Just wanted to say that I had no issues paying for parking at South Mesa TH with Verizon last weekend, 1/20/24. Great video, we started with Bear Peak & South Boulder Peak last weekend, and we're working our way up to the Skyline Traverse by Memorial Day '24 before jumping back into 14ers this summer.

Yeah. I think “just” doing South Boulder, Bear, Green Mountain, and Flagstaff down to Chataqua would be enough for me! And I wouldn’t be running. I would be slothing. 😄

Great guide as always. You’re the best at this in my opinion. I noticed you had on some Hoka’s, possibly the new Speedgoat 5’s. Whatever pair they were, do you plan on doing a gear review on them? I would very much be interested in that.

@@TheVirtualSherpa Thanks for the info! I just recently bought a pair of the Speedgoat 5’s and have worn them on one hike, the Chatauqua Mountain/Palmer Lake 2 trail. If you go clockwise the first mile of the trail is quite steep, about 1,100ft in that first mile, and the speedgoats did really well on the loose rock/steep trail. The rest of the trail is a breeze though so I don’t how they are going down when it’s very steep (trail is a loop), which is why I asked about your experience with them. I planned on using them on Class one and two 14ers and 13ers in the summer and shoulder seasons. I was also looking at Sportiva’s, mainly the Mutants and Raptors, but others as well. I would have liked to try them above tree line on more scramble terrain but like you the windy, crazy weather have been holding me back. I wanted to ask you another question. Have you been on the Lake Isabelle/Pawnee Pass trail? Might be the most beautiful trail I’ve ever hiked. I park at Brainard Lake instead of the Long Lake trailhead, thus you see three lakes, numerous ponds, creeks, and cascades, and a massive amount of wildflowers in July. Then onto Pawnee Pass, up to the Continental Divide. Once you get to the sign (12,550ft I believe) go another tenth of a mile and you can see Lake Granby/Grand Lake. On a weekday and early there are not too many people on the trail to Isabelle and then very few to Pawnee Pass. Of course if you’ve already been on this hike you already know all this. Thanks again for the information on the shoes and all of your videos, articles, and pictures.

It’s depressing how overrun colorado is. I’ve done South Boulder, Bear Peak, and Green Mountain before. Super steep hikes, I couldn’t imagine doing more than two a day. Even going down them wrecks you. Great video though man!

Just came across your channel and subbed! I'm a runner now living in Loveland. I've ran Boulder Skyline Travers in early 2020 and it was epic! I'd love to run an out and back this year in prep for my Never Summer 100k race. Great video! I'll be watching a couple others here shortly too ;-)

Do you have any tips for hiking 14ers in May/the early summer? I suppose I just want to know what I need to be additionally prepared for because it looks like there’s still quite a bit of snow out on the mountains. Example: thinking about doing Gray’s and Torrey’s in the next few days but I’m not sure what the trail conditions will be like and I know the road to get up to the trailhead will be bad. Do you have any advice?

@@TheVirtualSherpa No worries mate. I was actually on the Bear Peak trail heading along the West Ridge, you were trucking along pretty good at that point! That climb up to Bear Peak was definitely no Shadow Canyon even if it felt like it at times.

Did some of that last summer (vid on channel) - thing I don’t love about the rest of it is the lack of any kind of trail and unique terrain. Views can’t be beat though, that’s for sure.

Hey look it's my backyard. I run sanitas regularly in addition to parts of the Chautauqua area. Yeah these peaks are steep and will gas you. One thing I saw. You say winter park on the summit of bear. That is eldora in Ned. Winter park is on the other side of the divide.

Hope you enjoyed yourself! I love your videos and really admire your mountain-conquering skills, so I’m glad to see this destroyed you. It kills me every time I run it. Just brutal. And there are plenty of Boulderites who do it both directions in a single day. Animals. FYI - There is tap water at the bathrooms in Eben Fine Park on the way to your final peak at Sanitas. Good reliable source if you can make it till then.

Water was off unfortunately - not sure if it was just my luck or seasonally but I almost wanted to film how disappointed I was that it was not running haha. Boulder is full of animals for sure - a great place to be humbled very quickly.

Congrats on doing the traverse! This is the area where I learned how to trail run & those technical spots near the summits are tricky, for it to be runnable, you have to do a short step high knee motion at a speed that doesn't make your heart rate go anaerobic. A lot depends on the line that you choose too, I still struggle with this, but sometimes I can get it just right, I suspect you'll be nailing it within the year.

My bro in law and I working towards this, if you did this on the 30th, him and I did South Boulder Peak that morning. Thanks for the guide! We are planning on doing it north to south, get Sanitas out of the way and then once hike Green, stay kind of up so don’t have climb too much to get to Bear and South Boulder. The hike down SB prob rough on the legs as last part, but could be better than doing Sanitas last. Thanks again! Also I always assumed the resort you see from SB and Bear was Eldora
@TheVirtualSherpa
@TheVirtualSherpa 2 года назад
I was thinking that along the way - If north to south is better. Probably would be, so long as you don’t take the most direct trail up Sanitas. I will say though, once you get to south Boulder - it’s generally a straight downhill to Sanitas which was nice in terms of actual runnable terrain (for me at least).
@emfritz82
@emfritz82 2 года назад
Congrats! The traverse is a beast, for sure. An "easier" way to do Sanitas is via Lion's Lair. The mileage is longer but the incline is more gradual. I definitely prefer it that way. I empathize with your "dead legs". It's a great route but very humbling. :)
