Paul, Mitch, Chris and I entered the Boundary Waters at Wood Lake on Sept. 23, 2023 and stayed for 8 nights.
We spent 2 nights on Wood Lake, then 2 nights on Good Lake, 2 nights on Basswood Lake then the last 2 nights back to a different site on Wood Lake.
This was my first time camping on Basswood Lake since 1985. While there was a lot to like about our campsite and Basswood Lake in general, the fact that motorboats were allowed was not one of them.
We had some rain on 4 days, wind of an easterly component every day and the sky was grey and mostly overcast every day except for 2. The typical high temperature was in the upper 60s and the lows were in the lower 50s.... warm for a fall trip!
The guys did very well fishing... we had several nice fish fries!
Another great trip in the bag!
Here's a recap of our 8-day journey in 15 minutes :-)

Hi Gary, just watched your Fall 2023 trip slide show for the first time. You know, I think you could go to the dump and come back with some super pictures. Another great slide show despite the weather and overcast. We took the grandkids to Wood Lake over Memorial Day weekend in 2022 and stayed at the site you used on your last night. That bay must of had at least 6 mating swan pairs coming and going. Always had swans in that bay in front of the campsite. They put on quite a show. Never seen that many swans in the Boundary Waters before.

Thanks Dick! It was a fun route in spite of the motors on Basswood... but we knew to expect that. Now that there is a more active solar activity cycle we kept looking for northern lights while up there but never did capture them. Maybe 2024 🙂

Thanks for watching Matthew... even though we didn't technically hit the colors at peak, it was pretty darn close :-)

Gorgeous photos as always. Loved the cute little turtle you found. The site you had on Wood Lake was the 2nd one I stayed at the one and only time I went into Wood a few years back. Jim Dodd and I were on Ojibway the day you came out (vid posted recently). One of these times you come up to the Ely side, you'll have to let me know. I'd love to meet you, if only for a few minutes.

Thanks Larry! Even though we didn't hit the peak fall color, it was still great! Funny it took me this long to make it to Wood/ Good Lakes, it's a nice area. But I probably won't go back to the motor portion of Basswood, even though it was a nice area, the motors were too intrusive for my taste. Yes, it would definitely be fun to meet up sometime and share some old geezer camping/ photo stories ;-) I will have to check out your latest video, seems you have a new 4-legged paddling partner these days.

@@HamerNaturePhotos You actually hit between peaks on the color. A couple of weeks earlier, the maples peaked. A couple of weeks later, the aspens, birches and tamaracks all peaked. But, you're right, the in between time was pretty good as well. Yes, I'm training a new 4-legged paddling partner. Hopeful that she'll be Boundary Waters ready by next summer.

Wonderful photos. Thanks you. Regarding the motorboats, with the exception of water taxis, I didn’t think motor boats were allowed?

Thanks for watching! Motors up to 25 HP are allowed on Basswood Lake, roughly south of Washington Island. We saw both motorized fishing boats and boats being used to shuttle canoes.

Another nice video Gary. Never been in to Wood lake, looks kind of pretty. The site you had on Basswood looked super good. Where do you think you might do your next trip in spring? I think I wil be going in on Moose and up to the Man lakes for a while. Take care.

Thanks Donald! Your planned trip into Moose and the Man Lakes sounds fun too! This was my first visit to Wood Lake. We liked Wood and Good Lakes. Actually, we liked Basswood Lake and our campsite there too, but the motorboats were more intrusive than we had expected. No plans for the spring trip yet... once the snow flies, I'll pull the maps out again :-)

I get the motor boat thing, spent a bunch of time on Saganaga Lake, was nice but the motors got old. I'll have the maps out too 🙂@@HamerNaturePhotos

Thanks Kevin! The tarp is a Cooke Custom Sewing 10x14 (1.1 oz)... it's served the 4 of us very well.

Hello Gary, another great video. I want to take a trip up there someday and I've started my search for a canoe. I've have a 12' Mohawk - royalex canoe now but I'm not sure if it would work for a weeklong trip. Its very light @ 43 lbs and maneuverable but a bit small and more of white-water style than touring. I still want a solo canoe but was thinking of something longer say 14 - 16 ft and more stable for fishing and volume to pack. What manufacture & model would you suggest? What materials do you think are best? Any experience with the new T-Formex Esquif canoes? What do you see as the best value canoe?

While I am no expert, I did a lot of research when I bought my solo 6 or 8 years ago. I settled on the Northstar Northwind solo. I got mine with the wood trim because I like the aesthetics. I think it's around 30 lbs (15' 6") and it is a good compromise between stability and efficiency In fact, I just got back yesterday from a trip in the solo along with buddies in their tandem. I'm afraid I don't know anything about the T-Formex Esquif. Good luck with the search!

I’d say use what you have and get out there while you can. That’s how I got hooked, 40+ years ago.
