Today I was very delighted indeed ! After reading your comments on the photos of my Bow on your page on FB, I objectively realized how to tighten the Bow. I had a gradual approach step by step and listened to the sound. There is a point when the sound is very good. Besides, there is the bouncing problem in wrong tightening. Part of my struggle with the G string must have been to Bow tightening. How can I thank you enough for your advice and patience ! Thank you so much.
Thanks, Alison...I have been trying to figure this concept out...to get that smooth transition, when changing direction, bowing. .you have given me something to practice...
@sandman... sounds like ud rather run before you can walk,i`ve been working on Alisons videos for a few weeks now and im a total newb to violin. I can whole heartedly say she doesn't ramble it is re iterating, very thorough and indepth and easy to follow. These are the foundation basics which everyone needs no matter what your doing be it reading , writing, learning violin or trying to ride a bike. So start at video 1 and keep watching it till you can comfortably understand what is being said.
hey, um i got a violin of my own nd bowing is quite easy. i take violin lessons every friday and it's very good for the brain because you are always multi tasking. (reading notes, Playing with bow and looking at fingers) :D Thank you for your tips... you have helped a lot of people out there. :D
I really enjoy watching your videos This one was very helpful and you're right it's quite difficult to get that movement in the hand moving the bow, my thumb does keep slipping like you mentioned. Keep practising?! Thanks again I really love your videos.
Alison, my aunt is a professional violinist. Since I'm a typical beginner, She had a way of holding the bow much like your way but the thumb is in front of the frog (The white section)
Thank you for great video can you tell during the exercise ie move knuckles /fingers up and down does your thumb stay bent or does it straighten when doing exercise many thanks
Thank You. Have you a Video about Bow bouncing ? One more question, please : On my Island, I have seen only the cheap and medium prices Violins. For example I ordered the Gliga Gems 1 at US$ 465. If I go for a modern Violin at US$ 1,000 or US$ 2,000, what will I get compared with the one at US$ 465 ? Will this be 2 times or 4 times better and what I should check to know ? Thank you again for your patience and advice.
Hi Alison I subscribed to your performance channel too; love the version of GNR 'Sweet Child of Mine'. Is there any chance you could do a similar version for beginners of 'Fields of Gold'. I would like to learn it to surprise a friend.
Christine Gage I cant do personal requests im afraid as im sure you can appreciate my schedule is tight but if i get more requests for the song, then i will. In the meantime, have you looked on YT to see if there are tutorials on this song already?
Hello my name is Leon Ragin and i'm 51 yr old l in Brooklyn New York, I'm trying to learn violin musical notes be for I get the violin, what I want to know, do you have any paperback book that I can order and how much is it to have you as my tutor?
should the thumb stay bent all the time while my other fingers are moving? cause i hardly can manage to keep it bent while practicing this, it gets straight as the bow goes up
this might help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tKpeYAnXYXY.html the shaking usually goes away and is mostly to do with the amount of pressure you put with the bow and how consistent you are with it.
hi, the little wood inside my violin is NOT in the middle !! although it does not move, but it is not in the middle at all.. it is clearly standing in the left side of the violin.. should I move it to the middle or should I keep it as it is and it wont affect the performance? thankyou
haha yes indeed! But if you want that nice smooth and flowing bow where no-one can tell when you are changing bow direction, then its a must! Stick with it - its not an overnight thing! Like ALL violin techniques, it must be developed....
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor I am just starting out, today is my fourth day of practice but if you say it is worth it, I believe you, despite it being difficult
I'm a guitarist who owns a violin (notice how I didn't say I play one), and I found this channel searching for pickup information, but this video gives the solution to the "how do classical violinists sound like they have infinite sustain?" question I've had for years.
I've been at the viola for 4+ years now and this video has to be about the best and thorough lesson I've seen. The professional string performers seem to defy my ability to detect hearing bow changes, now I know how they do it! You're a great teacher. Thanks.
You may have hyper mobile (double jointed) fingers. I have the same problem and often work with students who do as well. I have a RU-vid video on Kinesio Taping for hyper mobility (I will be doing some new/better ones soon) and I give a lot of tips for it on my Instagram if you would like to check either one out. Best of luck! :)
I literally started trying to (finally) learn the violin about 2 hours ago, and I happened to luck upon this after watching the one on how (much) to tighten the bow. I'm hoping I'm correct in assuming that - despite this apparently being an 'advanced' technique - it would be a good idea to start with good bow handling as early as possible. This is really hard, hurts my fingers so much... but I already notice a slight difference in my (currently wobbly) control of the bow. Thank you so much.
Doing it without assistant properly is hard and slow. Putting a pencil on a table or chair arm, putting your fingers around it, and using weight and downward force to bend all the knuckles works. I assume I will lean the movement from this over time, doing in in midair, half the knuckles and the thumb do not bend and I cannot will it to bend. I feel it's better to do it right from the start with assistance than wrong from the start without.
Thank you--this explains something I'd heard almost 50 years ago: while watching a violinist in an orchestra; he did an up and down stroke with the bow--and the note sounded continuous with no 'break' in between the bow changing direction. I'd always wondered how he did this...and you just revealed it.
Thank you so much! The basics of playing smoothly and straight with a bow can be challenging, but with your lesson, I can finally can get myself to bow better, after 8 years of playing.
Absolutely the best series on RU-vid for someone just starting out on the violin. I'm consistently amazed by how much your insights help me every time I watch one of these videos, thank you so much! You always seem to say exact right thing to fix the problems I have.
Haha, im not going to disagree -that was back in the day when i knew nothint about RU-vid, or making videos haha!!! I got rid of it a looooooonnnng time ago now.
Hi, Dont worry about the little finger coming off the bow as long as the rest of hand is working properly. Also, dont worry about tilting as this is something that happens when you become more advanced. Just play normally for now as you may find it will tilt naturally on its own or you can try in the future....Alison
Excellent! you explained the importance, the problem, what not to do, modelled the problem, explained where we are trying to achieved, introduced the fingers and the motions and presented exercises, modelled the fingers and the move and the whole finger holding position and the fluidity trying to be achieved, and presented it again and reverbalized it. All in less than 10 minutes. You are GREAT & you didn't over do it at all & the timing & tempo was excellent. I even practiced with my pencil.
I am a rank beginner but I found this video extremely helpful. It makes sense that practicing techniques near the threshold (i.e., with the fingers directly over the strings) would not necessarily sound good, but would be very helpful to learn a new technique. I found it helpful to play along with you until I got the sound you did from the strings. I thought you explained this extremely well. :-)
You are a great teacher thanks a lot miss I found all what I need as a beginner violin player with all my respect for your efforts I am very admire with your videos once again : thanks a lot
but i dont mean you are actually nervous of course you are not, but do you 'sound' as if you are nervous if you see what i mean? i think its a pressure thing and not the angle because if it were the angle, then you would be htting other strings. Since its a bouncing situation we have here, then its most likely a pressure thing.
try moving the fingers further towards the hair. I wonder if you are holding the bow with the tips of the fingers (or there abouts) as its not only a common mistake, but causes the thumb to slip through.
just find the cheapest one you can - it matter if you are a beginner and most of the cheaper beginner violins are pretty much the same anyway. Hope that helps Alison
Very informative, thank you. So basically you want to come down with the arm, while still kind of bowing up with the fingers, to damp the shock of changing the direction. And viceversa. I never tried that before
This is a very advanced bow movement - are you a beginner? As i would not advise trying this until you are a little better. This could be why there are problems???
This is a very hard and advanced technique, but please stick with it and you will get it. Just make sure the thumb is bent and that will certainly help....
Hi Alison, I've just restarted the violin after learning at school. I'm finding your videos really helpful and it's definitely helping me to get back into the swing of things.
im 11 and i have to go to violin classes in my school my mom is forcing me i am so scared cause my teacher is so mean and i am horible i been play violin for 2 years and i hav not getting better i forgot all the g and e notes in the summer im so scared ahhh
You should practice every day, even in the summer. If you can afford it, you might want to find a private teacher that you like and take lessons on your own. I've had mean music teachers in school too but you wont be in those classes forever, but playing with other students is good experience so I would recommend sticking it out if you want to continue to play. If you really just don't like playing violin at all then maybe you could talk your mom into playing something else or choosing a different hobby all together.
It will be hard, my school violin teacher taught me to wrong way for 3 years Now I left the school and my new violin teacher is teaching me the correct way
+James Farmakidis I just did the same. I bought a mandolin a couple years ago. It's a great bridge from guitar to violin, as it is scaled and strung the same as violin. That neck feels really small at the start.
NO NO NO! NEVER use wet things on the violin (sorry to shout) but please dont use wet cloths anywhere as you will cause so much damage you may have to replace all your strings. Use a clean dry cloth to wipe away the rosin from the strings and underneath the strings.
Ma'am Your way of teaching is v nice . I appreciate your efforts to teach in simple and comprehensive way. May God bless you with knowledge more and more. Regards.
My violin teacher tried to teach me that movement by referring to doing spirals and I never got it, but I got it down within the duration of the video! Thank you so much! :)
