Bowers and Wilkins, the iconic high-end speaker manufacturer from England, just released a brand new special edition version of their top-of-the-line PX7 noise-cancelling headphones - the PX7 Carbon Edition, and wow this headphone is really beautiful. This is a special edition black & diamond-cut version of the highly successful PX-7 Noise-Cancelling headphones that was inspired by the designs of high-end race cars. Needless to say, we’re excited to be first to receive this just before the official release. We’ll tell you all about it and then we’ll compare it to the top-rated Sony WH-1000XM4 & the Bose 700s.
The headphones themselves have modern, high-end, designs. Of the three, the new Bowers and Wilkins PX 7 Carbon has the most striking appearance. It features a lightweight composite carbon fiber, and cloth aluminum construction. The new Carbon Edition has shiny diamond-cut edges that surround the ventilation ports on the sides of each ear cup. Since the diamond-cut edges affect how air flows around the drivers, the engineers at Bowers and Wilkins spent many months getting the new eye-catching diamond-cut design right while also preserving the iconic B&W sound signature that fans know and love from the original PX 7. The original edition PX7 is still available in space grey and silver color-options which are matched on the ear cups and the headband. We think the high-end look of the original edition PX7 is a step better than the competition, but the look B&W produced here with this new Carbon Edition takes the luxury high-performance look to a completely different level. Bose decided to stick with a traditional all black or all white plastic design. The new Sony WH 1000XM4 has the most understated design of the three with minimal accents. While the accents are small, they’re tasteful and they give the XM4 a sophisticated look that should remain fashionable for years down the road. Finally, all three headphones have a USB-C port on the right ear cup for charging the battery. However, Bowers and Wilkins is the only one to make the USB-C port capable of both charging and passing high res audio through its wired connection. Since most people will be working from home these days with a laptop that doesn’t have a 3.5mm jack anymore, we think the USB-C audio cable is a really nice touch for people wanting the best audio quality from their laptops. In terms of build-quality, each one features ear cups that swivel. This allows you to lay the headphones down flat on a desk whenever you don’t have a headphone stand nearby. The biggest difference here is the way Sony designed the XM4 to swivel and fold into the case. This foldable structure makes it easy to store or carry the Sony XM4’s even without a case. But, it can be a little challenging to figure out how it works at first. All three are well-crafted, but the Carbon Edition PX 7 comes up on top with its lightweight carbon fiber construction. Carbon fiber also has anti-resonance properties that have acoustic advantages as well, so it’s superior design and build quality doesn’t interfere with the headphone’s sound signature.
In terms of low-frequency cancellation like the low-end “hum” in a car or the sound of a train passing, the Bowers PX 7 Carbon performed about the same as the Bose. The Bose 700 blocked out more low-frequency content marginally better, but it was so hard to tell the difference here and it was nearly a tie between the two. There was, however, a clear difference when it came to noises in the higher frequencies. When we were walking on a busy street with the sounds of people talking, cars honking and sirens coming from all directions, we were impressed by how well the Sony XM4 canceled these types of sounds compared to the others. Wearing the Sony XM4 in this type of environment is like living in a private world. Overall, the active noise cancellation in the XM4 did the best job of cancelling out these types of higher frequencies. In terms of noise-canceling during phone calls, the PX7 Carbon had a slight advantage during calls when we were walking and talking in a crowded street. People on the other end told us the reduction of background noises was slightly better, and on conference calls, fewer people asked us to mute if there was wind or other background noises - but honestly, they’re all pretty good.

Thanks. I've had a B&W PX for few years. It was their first ANC headphone, but it was BT 4.2, which is now out dated. After watching your review, I think PX7 is worth its update. When you compare with similar Sony and Bose, there's +/- in each one and they boil down to personal pref and prior experience. B&W PX7 carbon it may be. Thanks for the review. Wonderful. Love from Bangladesh.

I just returned the second pair of h95. Software ist fucked up. I’m having problems every 2 minutes. Disconnection, strange sounds, standby after 2 mins or right after a call, you take a call on and it keeps losing connection.. And the WORST -> when calling the headset is blocked on TRANSPARENCY mode and you can’t use and or even turn anc down to neutral instead of blocking all sound or letting all sound troough. Either wait till they fix it or buy something else.

Is there a difference in audio quality between original B&W and B&W CE?
@AudioAdvice
@AudioAdvice 2 года назад
Hi John. In terms of the performance, the audio quality between the original and the CE are about the same. Since the diamond-cut edges on the CE affect airflow around the drivers, the B&W engineers spent many months perfecting the new eye-catching design while preserving the iconic B&W sound signature of the original PX7. The original edition B&W PX7 headphones are available in Space Gray and Silver: www.audioadvice.com/bowers-wilkins-px-7-wireless-over-ear-headphones But, from a purely aesthetic standpoint, we think B&W produced a high-end look that’s a step better than the original. www.audioadvice.com/bowers-wilkins-px-7-carbon-wireless-over-ear-headphones Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Great review...My thoughts...I had the Bose and a feature they have which I really miss is amplifying/piping your voice through the speakers during calls so you can "hear" yourself speak better, but were extremely uncomfortable to wear compared to the Sony's I just bought. But check it...The Sony's sound quality is soooo much better (than the 700's) coupled with the app equalizer which Bose doesn't have....this is a royal pain, the touch controls are temperamental and the headphones have trouble deciding which device to stay paired with when switching between calls and Bluetooth input...the Bose however were rock-solid with this feature and the call quality was much better. All in all, I'm sticking with the Sony's (because of sound quality and COMFORT) but am exchanging them for another pair in hopes the touch controls and device switching will be better...maybe its just a fluke in the pair I got...but really miss the call experience of the Bose. All headphones should amplify your voice through the speakers like the Bose do. Also, there are tons of after-market "skins" for the Sony's to make them truly unique...I just ordered some!

Nice review on the sound and features. The problem with RU-vid reviews is that they aren't long-term. The B&W and Sony WH-1000XM4 both suffer fatal flaws. The pivot between the earcup and headband is faulty and poorly constructed. It's not a matter of if, but when. When it happens out of warranty, you're out of luck, and will now enter the paperweight stage. Bose stands by their products, even out of warranty. People with Bose QC25, 35 and 35ll have a long history of longevity to rely on, making the 700 and QuietComfort 45 safe choices.

Even as the Sony XM4 is solid at $229 also… I noticed the Px7 S2 is often compared to the Sony XM5 that also sells for $399. Costco has a great return policy so I can always return them to my local warehouse - especially if I can listen/compare to the XM4. The B$W will arrive around Jan. 3. @@bill3117 Across the board, all PX7 editions have carbon fiber which keeps resonance to the bare minimum. However, the B&W engineers spent months perfecting the new high-end diamond-cut edge design for the Carbon Edition while also keeping the B&W sound signature the same compared to the other editions. B&W told us there were some tweaks to the design to further improve upon the anti-resonance properties. So the new Carbon Edition takes the high-performance look to a whole new level, but all PX7 editions perform relatively the same. Never buy these shitty headphones. I purchased them for 350 on sale at Best Buy. Didn't even work 1 month. Occurred to me they were most likely on sale because they were sitting on the shelf for years. So of course the internal batteries are useless. They do work if I have a power cord plugged in, for a while but then the software notices the problem and shuts them off. So I contact BW and mention I bought them 32 days ago. They say, sure you can send them to us at your expense and then will look into them, you have to pay for that, and then you can pay for them to be fixed and the return shipping or you can pay an additional disposal fee if we decide their not worth fixing. Revolting disgusting corporation that takes advantage of small and middle class.
