While attending the 2021 GoPro Mountain Games in Vail Colorado (June 10-13), I stumbled across an adaptive electric recumbent trike from a company called Bowhead! These guys started in 2018 when the founder had a snowboarding accident that left him with limited mobility. I'm unsure whether he was paralyzed completely or not. He loved mountain biking and decided to create these recumbent tadpole trikes so he could continue riding! These ebikes provide stability, but aren't too wide (they can actually fit on singletrack trails, they are as wide as a downhill mountain bike's handlebar), they weigh roughly 60lbs and can support two Bosch Powertube 500 batter packs for a 1 kilowatt hour long-range capacity. They lean when turning, for added stability and maneuvering, and have suspension on all three wheels! The model that I saw was configured with the Bosch Performance Line CX high torque motor (producing up to 85 newton meters of torque) that is very responsive and high RPM. It uses a gates drive from the hand crank that connects to a chain, and then the mid-drive unit which powers the rear wheel. The bike had three Magura 200mm hydraulic disc brakes with quad piston calipers for excellent braking power, and it was using the Kiox display panel. While the unit we saw was not yet available for purchase, this was a usable demo bike that could go on and off curbs and off road. Pretty impressive... You can check out their official website at www.bowheadcor...
The motor is structurally tied to the subframe for better balance, weight is kept low and centered on the bike vs. a hub motor. They designed a carbon fiber surround for the driver seat, which accommodates the standard seat pad, and a carbon fiber skid plate below the bike for drivetrain and battery protection. As with most custom builds, using double batteries and high-end components, this electric bike is fairly expensive, starting at $15k USD. The bike I saw had a SRAM electronic shifting AXS derailleur with Eagle 12 speed cassette 10-50 tooth for many pedal cadence options and improved comfort.

Now that's engineering, Wow!

The amount of engineering and manufacturing complexity involved with this thing is mind-boggling. It is, by far and away, the most intricate handcycle ever produced. Over $25K for something like that!

This thing is great 👍 . Can you imagine the emotions of having your legs taken then getting on one of these for the first time

I can imagine how cool that would be riding it in trails or small streets, but I can't imagine riding that on a busy road like you could with ebikes.

Love the coverage this channel provides! This is very impressive technology that will allow riders that are disabled to get to places they couldn't go before. to the company!

That. Is. Awesome. I love how you're at a trade show too. Its kind of nice because it means we're finally getting somewhere where we can be reasonably setup for pandemic-safety

I do not like the Bowhead trike for safety reasons: no Ackmerman steering (All car manufacturers are required to have Ackerman Steering because the car can roll easily without) And all the high end recumbent trikes incorporate Ackerman for this same reason: ie: AZUB, ICE, Catrike, HP and Outrider... Compared to the Outrider, the battery is in a case that requires two hand, one to push the release button, one to lift the heavy Pelican case) for someone with mobility issues like one arm or low strength, it makes it impossible to remove for charging. The outrider has all the battery/batteries encased in the under carriage that keep the center of gravity low.. that is very important and the Bowhead has a very high center of gravity and because the articulating (non-Ackerman front end, these tip over very very easy, if you are a paraplegic, that can be a real problem. And getting your leg over that wide/high handlebar may not be possible for those who have disability Another thing, if you order one ($15k) they don't show in advertising that it has a permanent tall heavy roll bar which makes it virtually impossible to put in a pickup with a canopy. These seem very dangerous for these reasons: no Ackerman, high center of gravity, necessity to lift batteries that require 2 hands (instead of simply plugging in the XLR charger. Difficulty mounting this trike. (i'm not paraplegic, but my flexibility would prohibit me from being able to get in the seat. What happens if a disabled person tips over and they are not close for someone to find them.?

Needs dampers or springs on the leaning mechanism.. otherwise they can tip over because of the riders weight being so high. They need to incorporate a safety mechanism to keep it from going beyond a safe tilt. You notice, Devin had to hold onto the trike when demonstrating removing the pin and leaning the trike.. if he removed the pin then gave a push to the side, this trike tips over on the side.. This was demonstrated in other videos on YT.

Court, I've never seen a trike with a suspension that leans into a turn. I imagine it can be a game changer in terms of handling. Do you know if this technology will become available for pedal driven trikes and / or e trikes?

I do not blame you, everybody is pushing it, but wider tires do not give you more stability. I understand this is an off road bike and they have a place, bit I keep hearing this about bikes that will rarely if ever be ridden anywhere more challenging than a short access trail of hard pack. With those tall sidewalls, when you hit hard pack, pea gravel or pavement they are less stable. They are great for maintaining traction in mixed terrain (rock to dirt to root to sand). Knobbies do that, but fatter tires extend braking distance with dive and reduce cornering speed with squirm. Suspension magnifies these. This is why wide tires in cars are low profile, with stiff sidewalls and they don't ride as well. There is a reason we gave up balloon tires in The 50's and back then we had a lot more gravel than today.

Interesting points, thanks Mark! I often comment on the stability of wider tires as it relates to riding with no hands, perhaps it adds some balance with the larger contact patch and I'm just using the wrong words to describe what I mean.
@MHH3180
@MHH3180 3 года назад
@@ElectricBikeReview it certainly is not your fault. Everyone is saying it! Comfort and stability come from geometry. me and for suspensions are for off road control, not comfort. On pavement they can be a real problem. I sell a real low end Ditch style bike (mostly I convert them), but they have 35c tires and ride better and more stable than anything you'll ever ride.

No, I skipped because it was a pre-production build and the end of the day for these guys. I wanted to process and post before a dinner meeting so more people could learn about the mountain games in Vail this weekend. Maybe I can test ride today, what did you want to ask or know about with the bike?!
