...This is the easiest quickest version on how to make a Reversible Bowl Cozy for Microwaving hot soup or using it for eating ice cream in a bowl.
No tricky cutting.
Start off with 2 10" squares of cotton and 2 SCANT 10" squares of 100% cotton batting.
a slightly smaller batting makes the edges less bulky during the sewing process.
This is a great way to use up leftover pieces of layer cake stacks. If you are new to quilting, a "Layer Cake" is a term used for a stack of 10" precut squares of multicolor coordinates of quilter's cotton fabrics. Cotton Batting is used as filler between the top and bottom layer of a quilt. If you are already a seasoned quilter, you will have some leftover batting for this project.
Before you begin the project, you can make your own Bowl Cozy Stitch guide, so you don't have to measure each dart. Get a firm business card stock and make a mark on the east side of the square 2.5" high and 1.25 inches on the east to south side of the square. Trim the right triangle away. I'll have another simple tutorial to show you how. check back for the link.
1. Iron or press and crease like origami a cross on each of the cotton pieces. These are your registration lines to sew on in step 3.
2. Match one cotton square on top of one square of batting.
1:07 3. Sew the cross on the pretty side of the fabric.
2:11 4. fold the square in half with the batting on the outside.
2:36 5. line up the bowl cozy stitch guide along the right side fold.
6. sew along side it. I stitch about 1/8" away from the guide. Repeat 8 times on all of ..............the folds for both pieces.
6:10 7. trim off the excess dart material.
6:57 8. turn one facing into the other pretty side, so the top and bottom match.
7:34 9. Sew 1/4" all around, starting 1" before a corner. Sew 1" on both corners, and leave 3" open to turn the right side out. Trim the corners to reduce excess bulk at the corners.
10:25 10. Turn it right side out, and poke the corners as best as possible.
11. sew all around the edge around 1/4" away from the edge. Loosen your presser .................foot, because the layers of the fabric are bulky.
Done!
By using a business card, and trimming off an angle 1.25” wide and 2.5” tall, cutting away the right triangle piece, I line it up at the darts and see along side of it to avoid marking my darts or pre-cutting my pieces.
Let me know what you think in my comments below.

For folks who want to make more affordable cozies, instead of paying a LOT for cotton batting, you can use 100% cotton flannel sheets that can be found at thrift stores. They wont be as insulating as batting, but they go together smoothly and they dry a lot faster than those made with batting. If you want more insulation, you can easily sew an additional layer of flannel on one side. Also, vintage cotton tea towels (in good shape) make cute cozies' outer fabric.

Yes, flannel is cheaper at Joanne’s twice a year for $3.99 or $2.99 in October or November. People used to use flannel for batting before batting was available.

That template is a great idea! I've been playing with making bowl cozies and I also made a 14 in sq plate cozy last night. That one is 1/2 x 3 inch dart. It turned out! Gifts for my daughter. ❤

This hack was great. I have a template which I use, but this cut down the sewing time to under 10 minutes. For my bowls I would shorten the length of the dart. Great work.....thank you

I absolutely love the idea of using the business card template instead of marking each dart. Thank you so much - I'm not a newbie but still like to learn "hacks"! When I have a little more time, I'm going to experiment making different patterns for the 10" square like a four patch or pinwheel design. It might add a bit of time but I think the design will make an interesting addition.

I use a hemostat to turn my cozies. I found a small and a larger one at Harbor Freight. Makes turning so much easier with arthritic hands. I like the way you did your x, and the template is a great time saver. Well done, thank you so much!

Hi, was your template cut from cardboard or a plastic one you bought? I couldn't see very well but I don't think you mentioned where you got your template from. Thank you. Very nice tutorial , it will definitely save time.

Hi! I created my template on my own. Simply start with some firm card stock. An old business card will do. Standard bowl cozies mark 2.5” high and 1.25” in to form the dart. But, all bowls are variable and these measurements can be adjusted. Have fun!

Hello! I read the information about the business card and how to measure and cut for the date… I was just wondering if you know the angle of the dart? For example is it a 35 degree angle or 45 degree angle? How did you figure out what angle to cut the business card? I have so many rulers with angles that I could just place my acrylic angle ruler on the batting and just use my rotary cutter and just cut it off.. I know this tutorial is 2 years old now and I just found this my accident , but was wondering if you happen to remember . If not totally understandable! Thanks, Jeanne

New to your channel. So happy I found it actually. Last day of 2023, Dec. 31st., I'll start the new year off watching your videos. Thanks so much for a great little tutorial, and the hacks. I love the card thing, it's ingenious. Already got out my expiring insurance card, and ready to cut it. I've just been sewing these bowl cozies the last few days, so this is super great timing to learn your tricks. I've been sewing all my life, and I'm ancient, but never would I have thought to just sew off the end of the corners. Great trick.

@@sdlm2002with the bigger size it sleeps all the layers together better with diagonal corner to corner stitching also. I also sew over the seams again diagonally thru ALL layers when the cozy is finished so when they are washed they don’t turn out in a big balled up mess.

@handycaddy

I've used a business card size to a 3"x5" card. The most important thing you want to do is mark your card at the angle you wish to have on your bowl. My typical dart is 2.5" high and 1.25" in. Review the video a couple of times and I think you'll get it! 😉

Hi Sharon, I was searching for bowl cozy tutorials last night and that's how I found you. I made 3 of these several months ago but I became so frustrated I gave up. The thickness of all those layers was impossible for me to sew. I broke new needles. I tried needles of different sizes. I watched you and I've watched others make them and it looks like your fabric is gliding through with no problems. Even when you get to the darts your fabric went right on through like 4 layers of material. My family keeps asking me to make them some bowl cozies. If I had extra money I'd just buy them from you. But I don't and I was wondering if you would tell me how you are getting your needle to go through all those layers. I don't have a real expensive sewing machine. It's a brother my son bought me from Walmart about 3 or 4 months ago for around $150.00. So it's a rather new machine. Do you think my problem is that I need a more expensive machine? I hope that's not it. I've bought several different size needles. I think the last ones I used were a size 16. Please can you help me?
@handycaddy
@handycaddy Год назад
I cut my batting slightly smaller so I am just catching the very edge of the batting, because it’s so thick. You don’t need to have so much batting around the edge. You could try sewing needles used for denim fabric. Try asking a JoAnns sales person to select it for you. If you are breaking needles, I think your machine is powerful enough. When seeing through thick layers, go slow, and hand crank it if it feels like the needle is struggling.
@handycaddy
@handycaddy Год назад
What kind of batting are you choosing? It should be 100% cotton, and get the lightest weight available. I use my left over batting from previous projects. If you know anyone who quilts, you can ask them for their scraps. You only need them 10” square, scant. You can also trim off a layer of the batting at the edge, to make it easier to turn it right sides out. If you still struggle, after you’ve trimmed the batting edge, you can stretch the edge to thin out the batting around the edges and trim.

@MaryDeanDotCom
@MaryDeanDotCom Год назад
I thinks it’s a problem with your machine. The needle might not be seated properly, the thread or bobbin tension might be too high, the bobbin might be inserted incorrectly, the needle might be misaligned and hitting something. I assume you’re not sewing over pins. 😊 Try sewing one layer, then two layers then three layers and make sure the stitches look perfect on both sides. Size 12 or 14 should be fine unless you’re sewing through denim or something. Good luck!
