Watching the work being done and the choice of tools might give the impression you do not know what you're doing, but in reality this is the work of an inspired, creative and talented artist who knows her tools. The final simple beautiful bowl do not render justice because ignorantly one might say 'That's easy to do on a lathe!' True. But doing it without a lathe. That's a different story. You're a true artist.

That was clever. I have to admit, I would have never thought of that. A tip: when you glue up two pieces of wood like that sprinkle a pinch of salt over the area, it provides grit to keep the blanks from slipping and melts away when the glue dries. Makes it easier to keep everything aligned.

The result is wonderful, the process however convoluted, shows remarkable flying by the seat of your pants to overcome tool limitations. This project will also instill a sense of priority in the way you start to tackle each one,a lot of time can be saved when there is an orderly plan of action.Planing the boards first, then cutting into 4 identical squares and making sure the glue-up was aligned would have saved a few steps.Maybe you can make another sled for the blade set at 45,would much rather see that, rather than twirling the bowl with the blade fully extended at 45,super-scary!All in all, never cease to amaze.

You are welcome, I made myself a rudimentary lathe years ago with a washing machine motor and adapted items of discarded industrial machinery. The problem was getting a set of reliable speeds but the challenges were fun. I wonder if you have a scrapyard where you are that takes in commercial obsoletes or maybe an ex-forces supply yard. You certainly have the imagination to see where a piece of equipment can be adapted. I bet these days there are even You Tube films showing how to do it! The internet was not around when I made mine!!! :) The following may at least inspire you;- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XCt3LooUVsQ.html

WOW! That's freaking awesome! It was interesting to watch you come up with jigs to make it work. I honestly wouldn't even know how I would make a bowl without a lathe. Great job!

Thanks so much! I had no idea how I was going to do it. But it was fun to figure out!

I have no clue why you would ever do this(besides just proving that you can), but this is one of the most intense pieces of woodworking I have ever seen. I am really impressed by the ingenuity of your various jigs.

That’s actually the only reason I would ever do this. Ha. Thanks!

Thanks! That’s what I was hoping for! I’m sure a real lathe would be so fun though

I'm jealous. I have all the tools because I lack the ingenuity and creativeness to do things without. This turned out awesome and I still can't get over how perfect it looks, all without a lathe.
