Bowling - Foul Line Release Drill - Before and After

After months of not being able to improve my bowling slide step, took a couple of games to practice a no step foul line drill for first time.
Felt an immediate improvement and will definitely be doing this drill much more often in the future.

Love the video. I’ve never wanted do that drill because like you said throwing strikes is fun. Seeing your improvement is making actually want to do it. Keep it up

Dude I'm in the same boat as you. Im a new bowler and the best advice I got was throw closer to your ankle for more consistency. I went from buying my first 13lb ball. Averaging 100 to now having a high of 215 after 3 weeks and around 45 games of practice. Less rotation and ending over your knee instead of bowing yourself to the right to get those rotation. Keep in mind I got these lessons from a woman who wasn't strong with strikes but could pick up any spare she got. I listened to every piece of advice and improved greatly. Keep up the fame brother and have fun!!!

You can really see the difference. Are you palming the ball on the no step drill or do you have your 2 fingers in as well? Thanks in advance.

I think your walk up is throwing off your balance quite a bit. On your second step you go 6 inches to your left, followed by your next step which is another 6 inches to your right. Keeping your feet closer to "on a line" with your walk up will greatly increase your upper body balance releasing the ball.

Monitor speed is usually in the 16's MPH

I've been all over the place with that. I had a tendonitis injury and couldn't hold ball for months. Went down to 12 lbs for over a year. Right now mostly throw 14. In this video was throwing 12 lbs.

I would say the biggest difference between your before the drill and after the drill is where your left shoulder ends up. It’s more quiet after the drill whereas in the beginning you notice it come back behind you a little bit and which makes you hit literally up on the ball instead of it just going forward onto the lane for your speed. I suffer from the same thing every now and again because I get lazy lol. Try pushing the ball out in front of you for a longer swing keeping that left arm/shoulder open and more forward for as long as possible until your ready to release and just keep your body low with your spine tilt and don’t pop up. The improvement looks great though keep it up.

Thanks. I didn't notice it that way. When I'm not bowling well I feel very jerky and it's hard to know where it's coming from. Maybe that's it.

I think the trick is thinking a lot about form during practice, and to practice with a purpose. Then when it counts, turn the brain off.

Hey man if you don't mind me asking, what weight ball do you use for strikes and spares? Cause personally I've tried out a 14, 15, and even 16 pound ball with no thumb and I've had the most consistency with a 14 pounder. I guess I simply just don't have enough wrist strength to cup it the whole way with a 15 or 16 😗🙃 And I'm even a pretty big guy, just have bad a bad wrist injury that makes it terribly weak and in pain after a few games each day

Bowling this way puts a lot more stress on wrist and elbow then with thumb. With thumb the centrifugal force of ball is going out into nothing. W/o thumb, it is going into your hand, forearm. If you have not bowling this way for a while and built up sufficient strength in muscles you are now putting pressure on, you can risk injury. I started practicing w/ 10 lbs, then quickly went up to 11, and then 14. After a year at 14 lbs, elbow tendonitis (from weight lifting) combined with wrist pain from bowling 40 games a week, made me go back temporarily to 12 lbs. then I read Bowling Beyond Basics, and just stayed at 12. In this video I am using a 12 lb Fever Pitch and Cyclone. I would suggest to most people learning how to bowl this way, at the very least, start with 10 - 12 lbs. Then, once you have good control with those weights, and have built up some hand/forearm/bicep muscle, go to the higher weights it you feel there is a benefit. Unless you are just a big guy, with big hands, the one way to get away with using a heavy ball right from the start is to crouch down low, bend elbow a lot and make sure the weight of ball is on your forearm. But that will limit back swing a lot and now you'll need a way to get enough speed on your ball to match a high rev rate. I think it's just easier to use a lighter ball. Also, as a bonus, 12 and 13 lb cores have higher RG. So they get more length. With my high rev rate and 2 degrees of axis tilt I have no need for aggressive, low RG, high diff cores. I struggle to get the ball through the front of lanes. So the lighter weight cores are for the most part helpful. I do plan on making a ball weight video sometime later in the summer. For spares I have repeatedly tried to teach myself to shoot them w/o thumb. I can do that on house shot, but disaster on sport shot. Since I can not hold a ball with thumb at reasonable weight, for spares I currently use an 11 lbs mix, extra large thumb hole. So I can kind of grab it more and just let it go.

You have little to no control over your swing and timing because you aren’t using your thumb.

Thank you for your comment. What do you expect from this. That I'll be like "he's right" and stop bowling as I do. Why do you care about how I bowl. At the end of the video I posted numerous shots that I pretty much just nailed. Even those splits where executed perfectly, I was just more focused on practicing technique than lining up after the lanes broke down. Maybe you should worry about how you bowl.

@@nothumbbowler1802 - I care because you posted a public video and are obviously looking to improve. Constructive criticism is the only way to consistently shoot 200+. You should get a certified coach. Perhaps you will figure out how to work around your faults, but I am conveying the truth. Then again, if you are just having fun it doesn’t matter. My mind is always on money since we play head to head for cash in my area which forces players into humbleness.

I think people like you say things like that b/c you are jealous that you bowl one way, and think other people can do something better (hook, power) with much less work. You think this is the easy way out, and someone found a rule loop hole. This is nonsense as: 1) I anatomically can not hold ball properly with thumb. I'm not trying to get a short cut around learning your perception of a proper release. I am simply bowling as best I can. 2) It has taken a lot of work to learn to bowl as I can. The point of this specific video was on no-step drill which I have found very helpful in regaining timing and control after most of year off from bowling do to injury and cv bullshit. Those people interested in actual content tell me they liked video and can see change from b/f and after drill. You waste people's time with nonsense.

@@nothumbbowler1802 - I can bowl many different styles, including no thumb one handed and two handed. I didn’t know you were injured though. It would have helped if you had led with that sir.
