@@Anthonysmith-ic8ef yep. My wife left the 5,7,10 split 3 times in one game a few weeks ago. And it was a pocket shot all 3 times. I always try and let her bowl her game without trying to help her because I don't like someone trying to tell me how to bowl. But I was like you need to step 8 inches forward or backwards on the approach to change the angle you are hitting. Sure enough it fixed it the next ball. Then she ended up beating me so I knew I should not of helped her.🤣🤣
What Dick Weber told me to do was shoot for the 7 or 10 pin on my practice games on the first ball then shoot for the pocket on the second ball. That way you practice both aspects of the game at the same time. Raised my average 20 pins almost overnight when I was in high school
It would be nice if the lanes could be setup in a practice mode. In other words, at the control panel a certain spare could be set up via the keyboard. I am not sure if this exists at any modern houses but I know it would be possible and would enhance bowling practice.
Corner pins are the biggest struggle for most people and they are easy to practice. Throw your first shot at them, then throw your strike ball at what is left. Twice the practice for your money
I personally like using the 3-6-9 spare system. My style (tweener) always has hook, and my house tends to be drier after the headers. I agree with keeping the ball in oil longer. Now if I could just hit my target more consistently...
Great lesson. Instead of being dogmatic about it, you have advised doing what’s most comfortable for you, as long as it makes sense. I appreciate the way your lessons are brief and you don’t just like to hear yourselves talk. Thanks again for your channel.
they are teaching you the ways to pick one up, showing u how you should shoot at one, if you're so ignorant that you can't understand that then why even come to this video.
nick rumley nah they won’t be better Bowlers than you’ll ever be, just gotta work hard my dude, they gave you the basics on how to pick up spares properly, now you just gotta practice and expand on that knowledge at your own pace.
Way back in the day, we had a bowling alley that still used manual pin setters. We'd go over on Saturday and they would set up spares for us to practice on.
Hey guys, absolutely love your videos, I am from Scotland and i never miss a video!!! Anyway i just wanted to share a little story About 7 or more years ago, USBC Gold Coach Ron Hatfield came to Scotland for a coaching camps, and at the time Ron was coaching Rhino Page, at that moment in time i had always had issues with spares, even when trying to throw straight... I spoke with Rhino and he shared with me that he actually looks at the pins reflection on the lane when aiming at spares, i gave it a go and have never looked back.. Even though i still miss some (COME ON WE ARE HUMAN AFTERALL!!!) i think i could easily say that i have consistently picked up more than 75% of my spares ever since
Yea ikr. I like to see bowling videos that show misses because I don't care if you're Walter Ray Williams. EVERYBODY doesn't always strike! Even when u practice on your favorite shot in your favorite house. If that was the case your average would be 300 lol. Keep keeping it real guys. 💯
@@Rah215 ironically using LaneTalk, I've had that spare once in all competition this year and missed it so I'm 0 for 1 LOL. I'm 80% on 10 pins (104 attempts), but 63% on 6-10s (46 attempts), and 100% on 2 pins (33 attempts). Give me 2 pins LOL!
@@TraumaER my 10s are my only bad ones I generally hook all my spares and for the life of me I can’t hit 10. 😭 I’m better of just doing a grandma throw for it
I'm in the same boat. I'm dead-eye on my 10 pin. But my 4 and 7 are iffy. I think it has to do with me crossing my body to get them with my straight ball.
@@stevemahnken2743 This is it for me. I will do some weird cross and completely miss my mark. I don't know if I should hook into the left side pins or throw a straight ball.
I play two-handed, so 10 pins are a bit harder but I still get them consistently. I would really appreciate having the money to buy a plastic or urethane ball because I'm a beginner. 7 pin is real easy for me too.
I stand on the last dot to the right and throw up the first arrow. I throw about 3mph slower to pick up pins on the left side of the lane, its give the ball more time to hook.
Very nice I would love to see a video about how to relax or calm yourself I get way to tense in league I bowl league and ibsuck it up way too tense after match is over I stay bowl 3 more games and I do great what do you guys do to stay loose and not strong arm everything?
I started in a league last week (stand-in bowler, half way through the season). My scores were all over...160-230 range. It depends on how I'm feeling as to how many Strikes i bowl. But one thing I've been pretty consistent at and I tell people ALL the time that ask advice..."Work on picking up spares!". You can still bowl a good game if you close every frame. My nemesis, the 10 pin. I have a high rev, unusual 2 finger bowl style. I've bowled this way so much that I actually CANNOT bowl straight. I've resorted to a very slow, left hand bowl that looks like a child threw it...but it works 80% of the time, every time. ^_^
Brad do you flatten your palm or keep your wrist straight? Or do you throw your spare ball as the same as your strike ball? What I mean is do you shot your spare as the same as a strike shot, i.e spinning your ball or flatting your shot.. some ppl have told me to roll your spare ball has the same way you would a strike shot.. I shoot my 7 pin across the 4/3 arrow in between. But some have said why a spare ball I just flatten my ball out it doesn’t cure. But then I’m off balance..
not TOTALLY true about half the lane to pick up a single pin (center) spare...for example the 5 pin...the circumference of the pin is 5 inches (rounded) and the circumference of the ball is 8.5 inches (rounded)...now the here is the strange part...if you measure at the widest part of the ball, you will have a 22 inch target, but i you measure at the contact point of the ball (lane boards), you will only have aprox. a 13.5 inch target...(try it with a ball & pins and you will see)...the difference in measurements is similar to "wheel's paradox" where you can get two different measurements of the same thing
You guys assume everyone knows how to roll a straight ball. Especially when im 84 years old . . . I coach people on picking up spares on a house shot. But i miss the 10 pin without ever going into the gutter . . .Rich Colorado im a silver coach . . .
How do you make a video titled never miss a spare and the video consists of never making a spare I guess don’t do what they did is that what I’m supposed to take away from that. Also if anyone else can explain to me why it’s so important to line up in a certain spot I just started bowling and I just bought my first ball and I’m not the best but I can control the ball well enough that I can pick up almost any spare standing in the same spot I attempted to throw a strike in. It almost feels like these tips and tricks are going to mess up my game
These are my strategies for converting spares: For 5, 3, and 2 pins, I use my strike ball to give it a little bit of hook. Same goes for double wood Since I am right-handed, I use my spare ball at the 6 and 10 pins. For 4 and 7 pins, I use my strike ball to give some hook. There are times I have used my spare ball. I can tell you my other strategies in private communications. Missing makable spares are the pain killers.
Ball is driving high. Move further inside to catch a little more oil or throw it a pinch faster either one are the automatic adjustment for house shots
Exactly the video I need 😂🤣 I’m only in my 3rd ever league and just met some pros today to learn more. One spare I can get though is the 5 pin other than that.... 😂🤣
I’m in my first league rn just started bowling around 8 months ago and am averaging round 215 this last 10 weeks but really sucked beginning of year with average 145 to start! Just keep playing and you’ll see it approve! Good luck with your 5 pin I hate the 7 I’m a lefty
He missed it in the semi-finals Team competition with Dallas at BOPO...Cost them another chance for 3 straight Elias CUP.....I'll bet Norm doesn't invite him back for this year's team
Typically sports shots won’t give you as much miss rooms and hooking at certain spares may not work. I bowled Junior Gold (the youth national tournament) last summer and there was one pattern that was really long. I couldn’t get my ball to read to hook at any left or middle spares, and I ended up throwing straight at everything. They are probably envisioning that and it does really work in any situation, as long as you have practiced it emough
I move to the right, and shoot straight for the 10 (right handed), but I don't move, for the 7. I don't use a hook ball, but i can flick my wrist, spiraling the ball across the lane, and into the 10. The other night, my ball actually hung right onto the edge of the lane, allllllllllll the way down, hitting the 10, before (Yes, I watched, and it counted, lol) finally landing in the gutter. 😳
I dunno how trustworthy this is after the PBA Players Championship today 🤣 For real tho, awesome videos, already ringed the bell, and great performance today, Kyle!
I roll my a-sym ball straight and slow down the right side edge og the gutter and it slowly walk over into the 7 pin 100% of the time.. I have actually set it on the ground , put my foot on top and rolled it only with my foot and have hit the 7 pin 100% of the time. I dont have to look.. Walk up slow, roll it like 5-7 mph and walk away. Oil does not matter. I hit it....lol
I don't understand. Why do you teach to change your delivery just because the spare is on the left hand side. I've been shooting for 40 years averaging in the 200 and hooking the ball anything but the 10 pin. Why change your delivery change your speed? Makes no sense. You leave a 4 pin or 7 pin and you take some speed out of your straight shot and let the ball just turn over and take out the spare. As professional bowlers you have the talent to throw straight ball at your spares but the average Joe should do what's easiest and that's the hook the ball over to the left side. Do what is natural and for most of us it is to hook the ball.
A light strike ball, as long as the angle of attack isn't too sharp, would more simply pick up the spare Brad missed. It's like picking up the 2 / 9 while not missing the head pin. Another spare method that works well and is easier to do is: for anything except the 10 pin Keep the same strike mark and move your approach right or left. One dot right on approach gets the 7 pin one dot to the left gets the baby split. You don't have to change your speed or your release or your ball this way. 10 pin change ball or reduce rotation and move one dot left over strike mark. Give it a try. Old school says to use the whole lane on corner spares, not half ask Norm Duke. I know humor makes disappointment easier to swallow but it can also harmatures
I really like the advice you gave. I really like the point about drifting and how basically everyone's spare game is a little different. I have always looked for a "quick fix" in my spare game. You like you were saying "you have to stand here and you have to hit this mark" because I didn't practice. So I agree FOR THE LOVE OF GOD... JUST PRACTICE. lol again great advice gents.
These guys need to simplify the situation. For a right hander and you are bowling on a house shot. You can hook into any spare on the left side and go straight at most spares on the right side. On a pro pattern you almost always want to go straight at any single pin spare.
I’m right handed and I use hook to pick up spares on the left rather than going straight at them. Seems to me you have a much bigger margin of error that way. Depending on oil you can through your ball anywhere between 3 arrows and possibly make the spare.
so i'm new to bowling, when you want to throw a straight ball say at the 1 pin over the middle arrow where should i stand and slide for a left hander? i've heard the rule of seven but not sure how that exactly works. also whats the best hand and wrist and release condition. thnx, steve.
