apparently when they were making SM64, the very first thing they made was the rabbit in the basement, and they kept tweaking the movement until they felt like it felt fun to chase the rabbit around before they went onto the rest of the game, that's why the game feels so good compared to other N64 3d platformers and I think that's why they keep coming back to it

22:03 Creative thinking and I do think that would be cool, but I think there are just better solutions out there. Xenoblade X does pushing on the left stick for sprinting and ZR to jump, and games like Splatoon have ZL act like a sprint button. I feel like 3D platformers should adopt a "ZR to jump" mindset because the whole claw grip thing is kind of awful
