Hairstylist - would you charge extra if a client had this much hair? Clients - Would you pay extra if your hair was this long? How long would it take you to braid all this hair?🤔 What are your thoughts? Is it ethical to charge more if a client had more hair than you are use to?
Glam by Merry most definitely, it’s very ethical. You have to think about the additional amount of work it will take you to prep her natural hair in addition to the weave. More hair= more money and people with a lot of hair usually expect to pay more then normal!
Glam by Merry this is the way I think about it... if I were to take my car to the auto shop I’m paying for the service in addition to the product/parts and labor. So if they’re servicing a Benz and a Chevy for the same problems there would always be a price difference. As a braided you’re providing a service as well, so do cheat yourself by charging someone with long thick hair the same price you would charge someone with thinner wavy hair.
Glam by Merry When I used to go to get my hair braided. I was told that. My hair was long. In there usually charge by the length in what style you getting. But for the most part, it all depends on how you manage your business.
I wouldn’t charge more for the length, I would charge more for thickness however. The more hair more work, the length doesn’t matter seeing as though we all braid to the ends nowadays anyway
We’re in Ireland... there aren’t many folks with Afro hair... in fact I wasn’t even taught about it in my hairdressing class. After I’d been working a couple of years I got asked to help out at a charity fashion show, I arrived a little later than the other hairdressers and I got sniped at “you can do the black girl”... Helen was close to tears, she’d had her hair box braided to try to make things easier on the night, but I twisted and twirled it up into a fabulous up do, then she cried again because no one had ever attempted to do anything with her hair. I started watching the RU-vid videos shortly after. I wish we had more training... and I’m gutted there are girls out there being treated this way! Thank you so much for your video!
They really don't teach it here either. I got my license after I had been a braider for years and they could not reach me much about our hair. I learned how to do our hair from my grandma and she learned from her grandma. I could press and relax hair before I went to beauty school. I went to school to learn how to cut, color and the everything else. I currently work at a multicultural salon and I provided every service.
I've been braiding/styling hair for almost 10 years, and i have never charged a client for their hair length. I do however charge extra for braid size. I myself have waist length natural hair, and when i go to my stylist, she charges me for braid size as well. I've had some braiders ask for $200-300 for medium-large braids on my hair. I don't think it's ethical, but i do understand it's time consuming and some stylist base their prices on time. When i braid my hair, it takes me 8 hours, and it would take me about 6-7 hours to braid a clients hair that length. You do awesome work, and i love how happy your clients are with the finished results. Thanks for sharing!
alwayz classy oh see thats too much im a braider and the most ill ever charge for extremely thick hair for box braids is 150 200.00-300.00 is outrageous pricing
Um no if your hair is that long u have to pay a little more that's so much work for the person it takes them hours of hard work to do it regular price is crazy
The takedown is going to be HELL! She is literally going to have to start from the bottom because of the length of her hair. Someone with shorter hair could just cut the braid and let it begin to unravel to start the process. Bless her ❤️.
I don’t charge extra for longer hair because I’m trying to promote hair growth and healthy hair I only charge extra for hair style changes during a session
Trudy Ledbetter well youvnot a rral braider because i would definatrly braid her hair i been braiding for 17 years and the people who have more hair appreciate it more
Dang you finished all of those braids in only 6 hours? Would’ve took me FOREVER due to how long her hair was. But i would never charge people extra for how long their natural hair is. Depending on the style, that’s where you charge. But I’m not a Pro lol, i just do middle schooler hair.
I have a lot of hair, but a small head and I’ve been charged extra for long braids just because my hair was long a healthy. Being “punished “ for having long healthy hair has kept me from getting my hair braided at shops. Where are you located?
Jennifer Gillespie I don't understand why people charge extra if they will braid past your hair anyway. It's like letting someone with short hair pay less for the same length of braids. I would understand if you had thick hair though.
because you have to braid past the hair so the longer your hair is the longer you have to make the braids however people with shorter hair can get shorter braids
I am a Cosmetologist and I can see her hair really isn't that healthy so idk what everyone is talking about. Just because it's long doesn't mean it's healthy.
Her hair is nice however i think she should have come to you with dry stretched out hair, because her hair was tangled. For her combout you need a detangling comb.
S Grant when your hair is that dense it’s actually harder to get it fully dry without using heat.. & at some point the stylist will always detangle your hair it doesn’t matter if it’s fully stretched with no tangles they’ll comb it out.
Whenever I would get my hair braided I would be charged at least 20 extra dollars for the length and thickness of my hair. I just got fed up and learned to braid my hair myself. I understand that it may require more work, but I can't control the thickness of my strands.
Don't forget to subscribe to her channel! If we can get her to 1k subs she will post a video on her hair journey. SUBSCRIBE below!! ru-vid.com/show-UCr0zbuiOX3sVWs0qqvr7dQw
Sidney Blackman exactly, like I noticed some stylist will charge less for someone who has a less dense more finer hair compared to some how has a more coarser texture. I see it on social media all the time
Sidney Blackman right! That’s why I don’t go to hair stylist and def Wundt get braids did you see she went up that braid with those scissors? Lord I hope she didn’t cut her real hair🧐
Sidney Blackman Texture yes, length no. I think anything over 16 inches is very long; thus will take longer to do properly causing a stylist to miss out on money. I think an extra 20 is fair.
Beautiful. And no shouldn't be an extra charge for longer healthier hair. Me personally feel like this hair is easier to work with for individual styles. As long as the clients hair is washed and stretched.
Mary Evans u k I do braids and some natural hair clients and children will come in natural Not stretched nothing completely kinky and all some be dry and it’s so irritating They could help us out and stretch it out so it won’t take as long 🤦🏾♀️
@@smjenn8394 for clients like that I'll let them know what i expect and give them the options of me detangle the hair and blow it out for an additional charge or they can come prepared and ready to go. Cause it takes alot of time to prepare the natural hair for braiding or styling.
The braids are gorgeous and so is her natural 4C long hair! Of course, I'm ready to learn more about healthy hair growth. "We're waiting, to see your video Ije Uko!"...no pressure, lol.
I’m a nurse and I feel like if you have a stroke and are overweight, you don’t get charged more because it took 2 nurses to help you get to the bathroom versus the guy next door who had a stroke who is normal weight who only needed 1 nurse 🤷🏽♀️
Ok, but as a nurse working for a facility your earnings are dictated by your prenegotiated salary. A stylist's earnings are dictated by the clients INDIVIDUAL needs. You have no vaild logic.
Different jobs are different, though & any agreement/contract you make in each is basically you accepting the deal with it. If you get paid by the hour - you're getting paid for your time, not labour. It doesn't matter what or how much work/labour is done - you know going in what your job is & you agree to be paid X amount per hour to do whatever your job entails. Some days/times are going to be worse than others, but that's what you agreed to. If you get salary - you've agreed to get the job done, for X amount overall, no matter how long it takes / how many hours you have to put in & same thing; you know that going in. If you get paid on commission, you're basically agreeing to meet a quota then exceed it for any profit after, based on a percentage of sales. Similar to salary, that end goal is paramount, whatever it takes work/hours-wise to get there. And again.. you know it going in. Generally speaking if you think what you get isnt worth what you're doing to get it, you either suck it up or go elsewhere. If you're in any industry that pays *per project*, however - you evaluate your pay on a case by case basis keeping in mind how labour-intensive it will be & how much time it will take. Some things are so common they can be flat-rate, but that's the same for any industry like that: graphic design, working from home, consultants, independent contractors, home design, builders, stylists, etc. & there are tiers: the higher the skillset or demand for someone, the more they can charge for their services. The thing is everyone in those industries has to consider "fair market price" - a baseline in where any similar service elsewhere charges around the same price for the same quality of service. That is the only way people can make money without deteriorating their industry - if they go *below* FMP to get more clients not only are they underselling themselves, they also damage the value of the industry & undersell others in it in the process. If they go too high without providing an appropriate level of service for it, they just don't stay in business. Nursing is a completely different industry than stylists. They usually get hourly or salary pay. Stylists function more like independent contracters - even if they work in a company-owned salon & agree to go by their pricing range, they pay for their own tools & pay rent for their chair/space & can usually go elsewhere if they aren't making enough for their skill level/time or the amount of money they're having to put INTO their job to keep it. Work isnt divided evenly between people, either - it's not a "there is this much work & each person does their part/assignments" environment. You have to work hard to get & keep clients or you won't even make enough to keep up your certification & pay rent on your space, let alone your personal bills or upgrade/expand your tools so you can do better work & advance in the industry. The only other thing comparable to it is working on commission - you HAVE to make a certain amount to even keep your job. But you also have to exceed that to pay your bills or do anything other than break even.
The day my hair gets to this length, is the day I'll give protective styling a break. Unless I get bored wearing my hair out. But I'm just going to rock my long thick hair for a good amount of time! It currently reaches my neck. About to take down my braids, can't wait to see new growth! Her hair is gorgeous! Then they say 4c hair doesn't grow! 😍
To say firstly is to imply there is a secondly yet there is only one point. Please please pleeeaaassseee don't say firstly if theres only one point. Thanks :)
You are losing time and money if you don't charge by the length they teach you that in school you get paid by the amount of work you have to do so if someone has extremely long hair you have to braid the weave past their natural hair length so that's extra work and you should charge extra money , when you are a LICENSE hairstyles your time is money . Just to test yourself the next time you do that client's hair time it and then do someone's hair that's shorter then hers and you will see that it will take you long to do the longer hair , besides we're I'm from the Africans charge by the hour when they braid hair.
exactly right! y'all tripping, it's not just that you are "braiding past her length".. look at that mane, look at the density, look at the how much extra time it takes to tame, detangle, and section and handle her hair. Sorry you chose to grow your hair that long so if it takes more time and physical effort, up charge boo. Time is money, period.
immadomenow you sound stupid....someone could have shorter hair than hers and still choose to get braids the same length..."sorry if you choose to grow your hair that long..." You sound like a bald ass hater
Licensed cosmetologist here and I think u did great absolutely love them . There very neat and organized and I like the fact that you used product !!! Awesome job .
Can I just say, thank you? Thank you for showing us her hair in particular. Yes her hair is long which is the reason some people are watching. However, though I appreciate you showing her texture. A lot of stylist will only show the clients with looser texture because they feel it’s more “appealing” to the viewer. But no this is way more appealing honestly because I feel like as a stylist it shows you have range and can work with ALL HAIR TYPES. & it makes people wanna book with you in particular because they see this kind of representation on your page. So once again thank you .
I have 22inches of hair, and unfortunately that’s why I don’t get my hair braided as I would like because people would charge you a lot of money, but someone else would come in and get the exact length and size and pay half of what I’m paying!!
Honey Rose That is so true! My hair is longer and way thicker than the model on this video and I pay way more than lots of clients. Lucky for me I braid as well so if I have the time, I braid my own hair. Also in my opinion braiding a type 4c hair, detangling with a leave-in conditioner and detangling brush (special for this type of hair) does wonders. The conditioner keeps the hair "semi-wet" and prevents extreem detangling if u wanna keep the braids longer than the usual 3 weeks😁
Latoya B I hear you!! I started to learn how to braid my own hair as well, because the prices was just outrageous, I felt like your going to braid the extensions anyway, what does my hair have to do with it,?? I’m glad I’m not the only one who notice this!!
Honey Rose exactly! Although I understand that long hair takes more time, but it doesn't motivate us colored girls to grow our natural hair if it's gonna cost us lot of money to maintain it..😄😄 So I'm with u on this one lady!
Using a scissors to trim off the braids may result in cutting parts of her hair, just an observation. The foam was good enough. I would charge for thickness not length. Thanks for the video and I'll subscribe to her channel. She's hair goals.
Actually no. Natural hair stays in better than permed. If her hair qas permes i would have agreed qith your statement. And this girla natuaral hair texture is the best. You really dont have to trim because its stays in place
It is ethical to have them pay more if you’re using more hair, or more product. If it takes you longer than usual, that’s when something like charging by the hour would come in handy
As a client/consumer, I've been charged extra because of my hair thickness/density in combination with length. I was required to pay extra with relaxed hair as well. In a relaxed state, I believe my hair grew out to 18 inches [in weave/ hair extension reference]. While natural after my "big chop", my hair grew to 14/16 inches when stretched.
Maybe it is not shown on the video but the hair needed to be detangled by hand first then with a large teeth comb and with a hair lotion as they are dry. Then it is necessary to moisturize the piece of hair before braiding instead of just putting some gel. I have long natural hair and this is why I take care of my hair myself(I braid, cornrow, dye etc)because very few "hairdressers" know the composition of the natural hair and what does it need!!!!
Hi Love your work, your braids are very neat and clean. I’ve been braiding hair for 30 years now, it is all about how you hold your hair that your hands will not get tired. Yes I do charge more for longer, thicker hair. That’s time consuming and we must get paid for our work. It’s also to each it’s own for the way you want to charge. I charge more if the hose is very short as well, because of the size of the braids , it’s all about timing.
Brownmahfun She may have not needed extra moisture. Low porosity hair doesn't need sealing. If the hair was washed properly and moisturized properly. Meaning the cuticles were raised to let moisture in. In my opinion. The client should be good to go. Low porosity holds moisture great. Now if her issue is losing moisture like high porosity hair. Then yes a hair cream would be very beneficial.
When I go to a hair dresser I always go blow dried not just for the stylist but for me cause I don’t have time to sit there forever and have tugs on my scalp
You did a beautiful job on her hair. I would NOT charge more. I would consider it a privilege that she allowed me the opportunity to style her beautifully natural hair to begin with.
I agree that they shouldn't charge extra because of the fullness or length of your hair. You still have to braid the same length for a person with short hair if they wanted their hair that length.
(Please do not take offense if you are not) Are you by any chance from Ghana? I swear only hairstylists from Ghana 'plant' the braids like that and also tuck in the natural hair inside the synthetic hair so that it's not visible. So beautiful like the braids is coming out from your scalp. My go to hairstylist does braids exactly like that.
Akbbba 1 Don’t bother with her. She’s a very angry and pathetic woman. I saw her on another video attack someone for saying something, “I thought I was the only one who did that.” Or something like that. I asked why she was so mad and she started attacking me and calling me a bitch. And then she had the nerve to call ME a child as if I was the one going off lol. Then she kept saying bye as if she wasn’t replying to me with 10 comments every time I said something. 😂
I thought you were going to trim her ends. They looked thin, uneven an some knotted balls were being combed out. I really thought u were gonna give a clean trim before braiding. Nice results...🤗
She has beautiful, healthy thick hair. If her hair was a 3abc texture no one would have anything to say. If the hair stylist is not complaining why should you? Represent 4C textures. Love it! ❤️
Erica Dione She didnt say, or imply that 'just Nigerian girls' have long hair. She highlighted a country in Africa where she's noticed our women have long thick hair and you have chosen to take some weird sort of offense. I am British of Jamaican descent, I guess I should be offended that she didnt mention us too. Sheesh, has it really come to the point where you can't even give a compliment to a group of people without offending someone else?
.yes I learned alot about doing hair now I learned how to do the three string method and how to make the parts look better you make your videos so detailed thankyou❤
Both her natural hair and the finished braided look are amazing! I think it makes sense to charge by the bag to cover cost of product used; though if the client is providing their own bags of hair just the standard hourly rate might make more sense.
This woman's hair is amazing! Not using heat on your hair can be pretty hard at times. I'm growing mine out from a buzz cut and some days, I want to blow it dry so badly because right now it's in the goofy-looking, not-quite-a-pixie stage. But I'm trying to keep the end goal in mind - long, strong, healthy hair.
Her hair is nice but the condition is not good. She need to invest in a good detangling shampoo and trim the ends. Bottom line is.....if this hair length is not in your genetic make up....it ain’t gonna grow that long!
Some people have longer cycles for their hair than others, see some Indian ladies for example. My mother (Caucasian) used to have so long hair, that it would be an issue when sitting down or going to the toilet if she didn't pay attention. She would cut it just shy of being problematic when sitting down. My hair reaches a couple of inches below my shoulder at its longest, no matter how neatly trimmed I've kept my ends. Genetics vary.
I have always been charged for my hair density and length. Until I started to braid my hair myself. U did great and she has an amazing fro. I suggest parting the hair when u comb it tho!
Last time someone charged me extra for having thick hair- I never went back to their salon 🤷🏾♀️ why am I being penalised for something I didn't choose to be born with? I was actually hurt by that, if you charge extra, then you have no customer in me; my personal opinion
I wish this came earlier. I watched a from one of those buzzfeed type channels where someone took 10 hours to braid shorter hair in a slightly bigger size. The entire time she was bragging about speed and I was wondering if my hairdresser is just fast but overall it didn't rub me positively . Anyway you did an amazing job and i love your attitude
Subscribed. Fellow 4c hair. The struggle is real. I would love to hear her journey. I am currently at about shoulder length stretched out. Also not applying heat for 3 years now.
