We also have ordered from several of our Ukranian sellers a while back and received items without issue. I told the one seller I was more concerned with supporting them than receiving the items (which arrived in good condition) We have a Mayak II we purchased non-working a year or so back. Issue was a corroded speaker connection, easy fix. Fantastic performer and ours was provided with the NOS leather case and accessory kit that included a long-wire antenna. They do use a couple weird IC's but substitutes can be located. We have a Mayak M that had issues with one that I was able to get working with one.

Way to show support to the eBay seller from the Ukraine. The radio you demonstrated in this video was one quality receiver, especially as you haven’t yet done anything to it. I always enjoy seeing the gear you have being restored and would be really interested to see the receiver from this video being restored. Have you ever thought of having your own eBay store where you can sell the gear you've repaired? Keep up the great work - I’m not a restorer but am interested to see and learn how vintage equipment works. Maybe you could do a video which explains how and why you got into vintage electronics (maybe you did one before and I missed it?)

Regarding the Mayak - I looked up the schematic and it looks like the FM front end uses a proprietary soviet IC that I'm sure is made of unobtanium. So be real careful when poking in there. The Mayak apparently is also a rebadged Orion 302 (Орион 302), so keep that in mind when searching the web. On the comparison with the Sony - my money is on the Japanese set. Having grown up in an Eastern European country I've been surrounded by soviet radios my whole life, which has left me severe bias against them. No matter the circumstances I will always choose a Western set, over a soviet one, if I can.

The Маяк-2 is actually not military radio. There are a lot of common not military grade components inside. Also notice it uses 224 and 237 hybrid series which can provide a lot of 'fun' in case of failure diagnosis. But these are well known for russian radio amateurers so usually information is obtainable (including internal circuitry).

The old USSR FM was 65.8 to 74 mhz, actually still used in the Ukraine with the regular FM band.
@scratchpad7954
@scratchpad7954 2 года назад
That means that, under the right circumstances and with the proper modifications (few if any), an old Soviet radio could be used to pick up the audio output from a North American VCR or DTV converter box since their RF output is on Channel 3 or Channel 4. In the Era when those radios were new, they could have picked up US TV stations on those channels.

Recently here in Brazil, the frequency of channel 5-6 VHF (76-87 MHz) was reallocated to FM. It called "extended FM track". Most AM stations is in a process of reallocation to FM, unfortunately. But some stations still broadcasting in AM and 3 or 4 in SW.

Japan uses 76-95 mhz for FM, with most AM stations booting up to 90-95 mhz. Many US AM stations also have low power FM relays or translators.

4:35 Dedicatory inscription: To Captain Anatoly Vladimirovich Primachenko in memory of the joint service in Kamchatka from the staff of military unit 31404. Apparently in honor of the transfer to the reserve from military service. Yes, this is the Russian VHF band. It does not match the Western. For short waves, of course, it is better to use a mast antenna or a dipole between trees with a beam length of 15 meters each.

I talked to the owner in the parking lot once and got to see the car up close. he told me the sad thing is most people don’t know what “The Saint” is anymore,that every now and then someone will inquire about the log and give off blank stares when he explains its a television starring Roger Moore (now Sir Roger Moore). Maybe it will cause them to search out episodes or the show and they will become fans though. Many of those 1960’s British shows were also popular in America in the 60’s.

FANTASTIC!!! Can't wait to see more on the Mayak-2!!! Interesting to be watching this while a Radiotechnika Salut-001 (Салют-001) sits on my bench undergoing repair. At the moment, it seems that the biggest problem is that this is a potentiometer-tuned set and the tuning pot is dirty and has a shaft that is very loose. (so when the tuning is just moved a little but, the shaft flops around, and the tuning jumps...verified with my scope watching the tuning voltage as I tuner around) A mil-spec Clarostat unit is on it's way from the e-place to replace the original Soviet unit. :) I will say that when it is tuned in and stable, it's a great sounding set! I've added the Ukrainian seller to my watched sellers and will be watching to see what sort of radio gear he has to offer. :) A VEF-202 is also currently on its way to me from a different seller in Ukraine.

The problem with Soviet radios for me is that there is almost nothing on AM (only a few stations in other countries, hundreds of km away) and the FM range is wrong, requiring modification to the radio to be able to listen to any station. Oh and I think the USSR used a different FM stereo modulation. Same with TVs - B&W TVs are OK, color TVs use SECAM which is not used anymore (and VCRs or STBs usually do not support it), so I would need a PAL to SECAM encoder, which are also uncommon. There used to be PAL decoders or sale, to modify the TVs to work with VCRs, but those are not available anymore either.

"Oh and I think the USSR used a different FM stereo modulation." Yes they used polarized modulation instead of FCC multiplex. But any other eastern block countries used standard FCC multiplex, so export versions were fine, sometimes also with standard FM band.

Old soviet radios are (in general) very good on shortwaves. Russians still commonly use SW (they always had it well developed) to make listening to radios possible i.e in far Siberia or other, lower population/isolated areas. In the 80ties, soviet radios were a very desired thing in communist Poland, because they were capable of getting through radio stations that tried to jam the "Free Europe Radio" station.

Thanks for another great video! I enjoy watching your channel regularly. I was wondering have you ever considered doing a tutorial type description of how radio circuits work in one of your videos? Basically drawing out maybe a block style diagram or something in that affect and explaining how radio circuits work. Perhaps you’ve already done this and I just haven’t seen the video I’m not sure.

please use an CCIR to OIRT converter for the FM part of that radio. Don't try to modify it, the transistors and their feedbacks will not work well on the higher frequencies.

vkb means probably something like UKW on german radios wich stands for ultra short wave and that means the fm band....in german radios the K stands for kurz.... so the kb1 kb2 etc are the shortwave bands...i know nothing about russian language so just speculating here but it seemed intuitive for me
@5roundsrapid263

You would be correct. Very good intuition! It’s actually “ykb”, which is literally “VHF” in English.

I looked at that military radio. According to one auction , those radios were never sold commercially but were issued to Russian Political Officers in the Military, built to Special Government orders, guess they could listen in for bad officers or some such crap with the VHF section of the set.

I imagine reducing the fixed capacitance in the vhf local oscillator would lift the band. And a front end tweak. Good old radio.

Sometimes you also have to reduce inductance of the coils by removing 1 turn (whole coil has usually 4-7 turns).

@@xsc1000 Yes your right, odd how i forgot. And trying to get the range and in the right place on the scale could be touchy at such a high frequency. I think i need a good slap lol.
@xsc1000
@xsc1000 2 года назад
@@zx8401ztv I always did it with second radio to check right frequency. Russian radios are more tricky, because they were not designed to receive CCIR band. Some old ones tuned by coils cannot be modified. Radios from eastern Germany or western radios exported to eastern block are much easier, they were designed for CCIR and just modified for OIRT (usually by adding capacitors). Tesla from Czechoslovakia made radios for both standards from 70s - with bandswitch or with continuous tunning from 64 to 104 MHz (old CCIR standard was 88-104).
