About Ronald Kanne
Ronald is a wood turner in the Netherlands. He makes commissioned work and his own free work. And every week turns out to be a little too short to get all the work done... He also runs a webshop for other wood turners. It's called: www.dehoutdraaierij.nl. This webshop is in Dutch, English and German. The website that contains his own work is called www.ronaldkanne.nl. I thought that was one of the Chefware kit threading jigs, but looks like one you make yourself. I think I like your pop up better than the pivot. I am surprised when people make threaded boxes this big, especially in side/bowl grain. I took some threaded boxes from humid Oregon to central California, and some in the 1 1/2 inch diameter size would still open, but barely. I would expect wood movement to make that one move too much for threads to work.... I do love the quarter sawn plane/sycamore trees. Beautiful medullary rays in it!
@ronaldkanne
@ronaldkanne 2 года назад
Thank you Robohippy. When you make threads you always have to add a little play. Also I used a fairly coarse thread to alow that play in crossgrain wood... but you have experienced that already...🙂

You made a side-grain box, Ronald. I have almost the same jig, and having serius trouble with threading a long grain box. The thread simply breaks, even with CA-glue. Have no problems with side-grain boxes. Could you demonstrate theading in a long-grain box ?
@ronaldkanne
@ronaldkanne 3 года назад
Hi Kimspur, I will... one day... I can only guess what is going wrong of course... My first thought is make sure that the cutter is sharp, dense wood, light cuts... I'd say can't go wrong... :-)

What happens to the fit of the lid when the wood moves after the wood drying out or the movement of the wood tension.
@ronaldkanne
@ronaldkanne 2 года назад
The wood was dry when I made the box. That is important of course. Still, when the wood is completely dry it also will move a bit. So you have to count with that when you cut the thread... don't make it too tight...

Hallo @Ronald. Geweldige filmpjes! Ben net begonnen met draaien en dit is erg leerzaam. Welke olie of wax smeer erop voordat je woodwax 22 erop doet? En is het niet mogelijk om met de beitels er schroefdraad in te zetten? Bedankt!!
@ronaldkanne
@ronaldkanne 5 месяцев назад

Hi Ronald. So firstly thank you for allowing me into your family life for a very relaxing, enjoyable and informative 45 minutes. I am a beginner and have so many questions... but I will just ask one. As a beginner should I learn to thread chase before buying Simon's 'cheating' machine? It looks like some good (Crown or Sorby) thread chasers (16tpi) are going to cost around £150. Simons 'Complete Thread Kit' is an eye watering £495 - or around £350 if you didn't get all the bells and whistles. So... for a weekend turner who is fascinated by box making - learn to chase the thread or just dive in with the Ferrari? Also Ronald - On Simons demo of his thread jig he leaves his piece on the lathe and has his cutter is on the jig? The opposite to you? Why? Anyway, if you have time for an opinion on this (I sort of feel the same about chisels versus carbide cutters... but am sticking with chisels for the moment) I would be grateful. Thank you again.
@ronaldkanne
@ronaldkanne Год назад
Hi David. If make boxes for fun xhoose for hand chasing. It is more difficult but once you get the hang of it it is much more fun, almost Zen to do.. althought there are some limitations (grain direction, wood type)... in my webshop i have the thread chasers from Jan Hovens. He knows what he is talking about and that shows in his thread chasers. The cost € 75,-/set. I think you are mistaken when you say that i do it the other way around then Simon... Grtz Ronald

@@davidbuchan2224 i'd suggest 16 tpi for a start. Bigger teeth is way more difficult to start. A relief scraper you do need. But you can make it yourself also, and you only use it for 2 seconds... i never use the hook tool. Jan does, me never. It goes very well without...

Modern threads (on pill-bottles, for example) have 3 or 4 parallel threads, so that only a quarter turn will tightly fit the lid... Is there a way to achieve this with a jig like yours in wood? I'm asking because I have a very old similar ebony box with 3 threads and no idea how to do it!
@ronaldkanne
@ronaldkanne 2 месяца назад
Hi Kaley, if you turn a lid a quarter turn it has 4 thread "entrances". If you use this tool, you make 1 entrance. So at least 1 turn must be made... hope that answers your question?
@kaleygoode1681
@kaleygoode1681 2 месяца назад
@@ronaldkanne I think so, so to cut 4 threads needs 4 cuts each having 4x the pitch... I must look into how the pitch is varied... and find a trick to get accurate quarter turn for the entries! I like a challenge...
