Boxing Sparring - Sparring an Ippo Makonouchi vs Sparring a quality partner - Seattle Boxing Gym

Today we did something different for sparring, and I’m glad. Coach JV huddled us together and laid out the ground rules: since there’s a lot of beginners, start with light sparring and talk with your partners. If they’re going too hard, let them know and really just take care of each other. So he created small boxes with cones and paired us all up with different people each round. This would give us different looks and learn different styles.
There was however one guy who seemed to have some mental health issues and would NOT communicate and would actually try to knock out his partners after getting punched. He also didn’t seem to have much boxing skill as he was doing slap boxing. When he was paired with me, I had to go very light because he’s MUCH smaller and slower than me. Eventually I stunned him towards the end of the round because he caught me with a jumping punch. A good 1-2 had his legs wobbling. Despite his attitude, I would always check on him. He eventually was paired up with the Coach and got kicked out for his behavior because he was also trying to knock out the coach with consecutive jumping punches.
When you step into a Boxing Gym, you leave your ego and anger at the door. Nobody wants to deal with it. You don’t take out your anger on a sparring partner. Especially since you hit them as hard as you would want to be hit back. This is sparring, not actually fighting. There’s a big difference. We’re trying to learn in sparring and be able to go home safely. Fighting is trying to damage each other and end up in the hospital. And trust me, you don’t want to be in the hospital right now with covid running rampant again.

Second thought that kid needs a lot of shadow boxing, but if he wants to spar I would close my guard and let him shot so he gains confidence, at least that help me in the past
@Cloudfencer
@Cloudfencer 2 года назад
@@juanmatemos5695 He needed a lot of practice, preferably before he starts sparring. But then a lot of people are awkward when they first spar. Inexperience aside, it was really his attitude/behavior that needed checking. It’s probably harder to see but he would grind his teeth when he would pace around me. Kinda weirded me out. @@mauricebell2217 He’s definitely a beginner. But he had something else going on mentally. In the other comments we talked about him potentially having Autism or Asperger’s. Which is fine, honestly. But it would have been nice to know beforehand. I wouldn’t really have him in open sparring without us knowing first. But we may never know at this point. We certainly tried to teach him and communicate but nothing was getting through.

The first guy isn't weird, he is just unexperienced; you can tell right away from his stance and the way he moves, he often crosses his feet and has a very poor understanding of range and rythm... Nice shuffle at 0:23
@Cloudfencer
@Cloudfencer 2 года назад
Definitely inexperienced but he was DEFINITELY weird. I talked to a few other guys that sparred him that day and he would never communicate. He spoke English but only muttered to himself. He would try swinging hard, even when he got paired with the coach. Look at 2:40. What is he doing?? There was definitely some psych issues going on. I tried to keep my emotions in check so I wouldn’t obliterate him during sparring and potentially receive retribution outside the gym. He had a weird vibe about him. And it’s totally okay to be inexperienced. As long as you communicate and be open to constructive criticism. We’re all there to improve and learn anyway. Your ego gets left at the front door.

Lots of respect to you for not being a bully. I can tell you have skills, but you do a great job of dialing it down to meet the level of your partner. I wouldn't call the first guy "weird". I mean, I know what you're saying, but it's obvious that he's got some issues going on. Could be autism or some other behavioral/psychological issue. As long as he's not being a danger to others by taking cheap shots at people, then I think you should continue to help him on his personal journey. We're all on our own journey. But if he starts taking cheap shots at people, then it's your instructors job to kick him out of the school, or else someone is eventually going to KO him.
@Cloudfencer
@Cloudfencer 2 года назад
I totally agree with you and I thank you for the compliment. I don’t feel the need to show off my skill, I just want a good workout. I hope the first guy learned a lot from our session. He definitely adapted to my style but he had some behavioral issues and it eventually led to him getting kicked out by the coach after he paired himself up to check on this guy. The coach was trying to work with him but he kept disrespecting him and trying hard jumping hammer fist punches. It was a weird experience and that’s why I titled it as such. But I had no better title. Do you have any suggestions? It does kind of sound like I’m making fun of him but I’m totally not.

@whatnew1331
@whatnew1331 2 года назад
I think the small guy is suffering from an inferiority complex. The whole point of sparing is to open up and learn from each other in a controlled way. 50 percent capacity is what you were were giving him; he should have been doing 60 percent capacity in order to communicate the technique more effectively with you, in order for you both to learn. He instead made it more like 75 percent and the link was lost.
@whatnew1331
@whatnew1331 2 года назад
It's hard to explain that to people though through verbal communication; Especially when you're tired and have been training for a long time. The second dude and you though both matched each other's techniques and temperament evenly; thus it was a link; and flowed seamless. I learned by hard knocks on how ill prepared I was in an actual self defense situation switching from taekwondo to eskrima Kali and wing Chun. My masters foot work and techniques made quick work of me and now I never kick above the belt. Half your balance is compromised if they catch a kick or you telegraph. Would love to learn boxing and judo; getting ready to go back to Uechi Ryu karate, but would love to try the previous aforementioned disciplines.

@Cloudfencer 2 года назад
Thanks man! I’ve uploaded a few new videos lately since I started sparring once a week for the past month. I’m told I’ve improved exponentially. Check them out! As far as my build: I’m currently very overweight lol. I’m 195 lbs when I should be 175. I’m slowly getting back into roadwork and jump rope as I’m also trying to lean out. I don’t lift heavy weights like I used to when I was in my 20s since I now value speed and technique over power. But I still do the usual compound lifts like squats and deadlift when it’s time. Seriously, my muscular build is mainly from improving my boxing technique.
@fearpacex6000
@fearpacex6000 2 года назад
@@Cloudfencer ayo same build but less on the muscular side. I'm in my early 20s and around 190 with a 5'8 frame. I'm planning to spar soon too but afraid getting match with a heavyweight (they punch hard af). As a begginer, is it better to start out light (135 - 150) then heavy? And as college gym bro, what workouts are useless when improving power?
@Cloudfencer
@Cloudfencer 2 года назад
@@fearpacex6000 I should mention that I’m 5’ 11” with a 72” reach. So that may make me appear leaner despite my weight. I used to lift weights too so my bones are also denser therefore heavier. If you’re going to spar soon, regardless of weight, find someone that is more experienced than you and reasonable enough to do tap sparring or light sparring. Some guys don’t know what that is and will try to nuke you because it makes them feel good so be aware. Hard sparring like that is only reserved for actual fight prep. Anything else and it’s just an ego boost. The lighter weight guys like 130 lbs can still feel like they hit hard because you’re not used to it. But the 200+lb guys can hit even harder without trying. This is assuming they know the body mechanics of boxing. You can also find a partner to start with sparring drills where you just do jabs or shoulder taps so you can save your brain from concussion. As far as workouts, for the most part avoid heavy isolated exercises like arm curls or flys. Anything that makes you bulky and slow is generally a no. You can still lift weights but they’re more fight oriented. Look up strength & conditioning exercises for boxing to get you started.

@Cloudfencer
@Cloudfencer 2 года назад
@@fearpacex6000 I feel ya. The pads that look like paddles and flat punching surface gloves like Cleto Reyes give the loudest cracking sound that is absolutely addicting. The better you get the more satisfying it becomes. Keep at it. Also, before you do any sparring, I strongly recommend learning proper defense and footwork. Your partner or coach can help you simulate with padwork what it’s like to block or slip a punch. Learn the basics and build off of it but never forget them. Even now I go back to just practicing and sharpening one or two movements for a whole gym session. Having a good jab and footwork can open many doors to your offense and defense ✊🏽

Definitely had attitude issues. I talked to a few other guys that had also sparred him that day and we all had the same opinion about him. We even talked to the coach to keep an eye on him and then he paired himself with this guy to test him out. The guy actually tried to hammer fist and hurt the coach! Sorry to anyone this might offend but that's not sparing that's practicing movement and very slow and basic at that nothing wrong with learning the basics first but they're definitely not ready for sparring you should build confidence first like they're doing then come to the realization that boxing is fighting and someone is going to get hurt
@Cloudfencer

You’re right, boxing can be a dangerous sport. There’s definitely different levels in boxing and sparring can be light and technical or hard and intense. The latter is what you would do preparing for a fight coming up. Most of us don’t have fights scheduled and do this for a hobby or even just for a workout. So light and technical is totally acceptable. Why risk getting injured when this is just a hobby/workout? We don’t get paid for this anyway. As long as we can take some experience away and still come home without a brain injury, it’s a good day. 👍🏽

So the first guy that was shirtless was obviously a beginner from how his movements are. But what many people may not be able to see is his behavior. He was grinding his teeth as he paced around me, he wouldn’t communicate, didn’t care to listen to others when we gave him feedback. He was trying to harm other sparring partners too, including the coach. In other comments we talked about Autism and Asperger’s as a potential condition he might have. It would certainly explain some things. But we may never know at this point. The second guy with purple gloves was a great sparring partner that had no ego and was purely there for technical sparring. Great stuff. I included him in the video for the contrast.

But let me tell you what I saw that made me feel weirded out: He would grind his teeth after every punch landed on him but would never talk back to say if he was okay or if it was too much. He would just come back ready to try and actually harm you with whatever he could. Yes he had terrible form, that’s not the point. It was his behavior that was weird. Everybody else communicated with each other during the sparring but this guy wouldn’t. It was as if I could feel malicious intent but he didn’t know how to box.
