Today we did something different for sparring, and I’m glad. Coach JV huddled us together and laid out the ground rules: since there’s a lot of beginners, start with light sparring and talk with your partners. If they’re going too hard, let them know and really just take care of each other. So he created small boxes with cones and paired us all up with different people each round. This would give us different looks and learn different styles.
There was however one guy who seemed to have some mental health issues and would NOT communicate and would actually try to knock out his partners after getting punched. He also didn’t seem to have much boxing skill as he was doing slap boxing. When he was paired with me, I had to go very light because he’s MUCH smaller and slower than me. Eventually I stunned him towards the end of the round because he caught me with a jumping punch. A good 1-2 had his legs wobbling. Despite his attitude, I would always check on him. He eventually was paired up with the Coach and got kicked out for his behavior because he was also trying to knock out the coach with consecutive jumping punches.
When you step into a Boxing Gym, you leave your ego and anger at the door. Nobody wants to deal with it. You don’t take out your anger on a sparring partner. Especially since you hit them as hard as you would want to be hit back. This is sparring, not actually fighting. There’s a big difference. We’re trying to learn in sparring and be able to go home safely. Fighting is trying to damage each other and end up in the hospital. And trust me, you don’t want to be in the hospital right now with covid running rampant again.
