In this series of videos labeled "Proper Boxing Technique," I will show you everything that you need to know about throwing basic boxing punches. It doesn't matter if you plan on fighting or if you have purely fitness-related goals, having the proper technique from the get-go will help you achieve your goals much quicker... while avoiding possible injuries.
A proper boxing stance is crucial for both defensive and offensive success in the ring. A proper stance allows a boxer to maintain balance, generate power in punches, and quickly move in and out of range. The basic stance consists of keeping the feet shoulder-width apart, with the back foot angled at about 45 degrees and the front foot pointing straight ahead. The knees should be slightly bent, and the boxer should be on the balls of their feet, ready to move in any direction quickly. The torso should be upright and the guard should be up with the hands near the chin and elbows close to the body. This allows for quick and accurate punching while keeping the vital organs protected. A proper stance also allows for better visibility and mobility, so the boxer can see and respond to the opponent's movements more effectively. Additionally, having a proper stance enables the boxer to absorb and counter punches effectively, by distributing the force of the punch throughout the body rather than taking it all in one area.

I am 60 this year.. and just want to get fit and boxing will help me to do that as - it keeps exercise interesting. My coordination sucks.. and well I move awkwardly - so I do not do your fantastic teaching justice. However, I am excited to learn the basics as well as I can. Thanks for giving me inspiration to keep living.

I am sure that you will love boxing as you continue to practice it. It is such a fantastic way to get into great shape. It also translates well to real life scenarios. What I mean to say is …if you can box then you can pretty much play any sport or do any activity. It works the entire body. I wish you all the best in the new year. Thank you so much for taking the time to write a great comment and for watching the video😎😎😎😎😎

I've been using rear heel up in my boxing training for over a year. Felt there was/is nothing wrong with my stance. Another boxing coach or two on YT says all the great boxers have used rear feet down majority of their fights- this made me feel I've been standing wrong :(

@@fightyourwayfit yes-he mentioned them. Im still exploring and practicing. Seems many have both feet slightly raised or shift weight quickly? I noticed front foot raised allows for quicker evasion/counter whereas backfoot raised helps for closing distance for offense

Hey boss, saw your reply in which you stated just to make a comment on any video and you would see, so here it is. Saw your message on Instagram about how you used your gopro but were afraid it was make people nauseated. Best I can recommend is when you try again just tone the pace down. Have you and your partner go at a slower more technical pace and that may help. Like I said I affixed mine to the forehead part of my head gear and the only problems I had was it overheating and also because of the way my head gear was shaped the gopro was angled up a good bit and even with chin down I felt it wasn't ideal. So I made a small cushion to go behind the gopro and put it between the cam near the top and the head gear so that it was cause it to tilt down a little. Your head gear may not require that however, just sharing incase. I normally shot my video at 720, 60fps that was it was smooth, not sure which gopro you have but if it has a 60fps setting I advise using that. In terms of other ideas I have two. For one, not sure if you remember but I had asked if you do personal training and since you dont anymore and I wont get a chance to work with you when I visit CA this fall I was wondering if you would be open to the idea of a training session online, via skype for example. Me and Shane Fazen had a few before he got really busy and was unable to due to his schedule and we actually got in some good work if even simulated in a shadow boxing capacity. We worked on thins like reaction drills and what not, if interested I can go into further detail, just advise and of course I have zero problems paying for your time and input. Second idea is virtual boxing. This was also something Shane, JT and a few others have done and granted I know you said you didn't want to be influenced by their content but it is something that people seem to really enjoy and your boxing style is obviously different so I think that is something you should consider. Basically they would get in boxing gear, and box the webcam as if it was an actual opponent. While you throw punches at your cam the viewers would work on reacting accordingly in terms of defense and then go offensive when you are not punching. Much like a video game in a sense. It allows them to put things together in a sense in a controlled environment. An example video from JT ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MT_8PcCc-Bk.html If any of these ideas interest you feel free to shoot me an email at PortCityPhoenix@gmail.com and if you want to do a test run that would certainly be cool and would allow us to do some of that one on one skype training. I am trained, have boxed for a few years locally but could always learn more and I have had many virtual boxing matches with Shane, now I want a title shot at you. Haha. Be safe and let me know champ.

I'm right handed, but usually box on traditional stance as a southpaw and change stances to confuse my opponent and pace the fight. What are your toughts on the low lead hand guard on southpaws? I can use it comfortably on orthodox stance, but can't get the hang of it as a south.
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 7 лет назад
Thanks for commenting; A lot of people have difficulty boxing southpaws (me included) and so if you are able to comfortably switch stances then it can definitely be a benefit to you. All of the head and foot movement is reverse and such its hard to master boxing from both stances...but if you can do it ..then more power to you :) Boxing another southpaw from a southpaw stance will require you to more often then not move to your left. If you choose to keep your lead hand low, just ensure that your lead shoulder stays high and remember to slip most punches to your left. If you can get slightly outside to your left then you right jab can be a very effective weapon. If his lead hand is low as well...throw your jab over top of his arm and hit him to the lead shoulder as you step to your left...(that will pin his lead hand) then nail him with your left to the head without any fear of being countered...i know it sounds weird but it works to set up a left cross or hook: )
@ElCalvazo
@ElCalvazo 7 лет назад
First of all, thank you for taking your time to answer and for the quick response: I usually change stances when attacking so i can get a good uppercut with my opponents guard low, but that's a brilliant move you gave me there on south v south. I definitely need to try it. Thank you so very much! :)

@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 2 года назад
Thanks for watching . It is excellent that you are ambidextrous and can use both hands.. It is easier to teach someone when you make them lead with their left hand in an orthodox stance... yet it is harder to box someone who leads with their right hand and is in a southpaw stance...its awesome that you can't both...if you plan on boxing other people... I would recommend that you go with what would be natural for you... Use the southpaw stance. Thanks so much for watching 😎😎😎

@Fight your way Fit Need your advice. I'm reading a Mark Hatmaker book on techniques, and he suggests fighting with your dominant hand in front. This is totally opposite of everything I've learned, but I tried it and my jab is a lot more powerful. I also found it easier to circle to opponent's left side while I throw my jab. I'm a southpaw so I thought it was to my advantage to fight from southpaw stance, but now I don't know. Is there an advantage to a southpaw fighting from an orthodox stance? Opinion?
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit Год назад
Thanks so much for watching. You will always have different opinions but in general keeping your dominant hand to the rear will increase your overall punching power as your more powerful punch will have more room to accelerate. Now my person take is that southpaws were always more difficult to spar with because they do everything opposite of what your used to. Like 85% of the time you'll fight or spar an Orthodox fighter and you get comfortable doing certain things and then boom your in there with a south paw and it is different. For example I was sparring with light heavyweight Champion Adonis Stevenson and I slipped a punch by habit like a would an Orthodox fighter... and got clipped with his huge left cross (lol..ouch!!)... So yes fighting or sparring a southpaw is different and if I were a southpaw I would remain that way as I find it would be an advantage:)... Good luck with your training and thanks for commenting 🥊😎😎🥊🥊😎😎

So basicly,by puting the strong arm behind, not only Will give you more power when you used it, but to put the muscle in reserve,when the ITS time to used it, we have enough power to knock down the aponent. But if we used it to many time, it Will make the muscle weekend for to much used during a fight Does that make sense??

I would always err on the side of caution and keep your shoulder up. If you watch some one like Floyd Mayweather even though his arm is low … his shoulder is always up nice and high to protect him. Thanks for watching😎😎😎

The lead hand down stance seems to offer better leverage off your hips for dips and weaves, aka Mayweather. Is this true? Great vids 👍
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 7 лет назад
Thanks for commenting; Yes, I find that is true, yet the trade off will always be that your head is less protected, especially in close quarters where you will have less reaction time for the punches.

Hello, Mike. I notice that when shadow boxing, or whenever in the proper boxing stance, I always finish my workouts with my neck feeling strained. Due to your explanation (very concise and instructive, I might add), what I get is that the neck should be "hunched" and the shoulders "shrugged". Is my neck pain "normal"? I am really enjoying these videos! Many thanks :)
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 4 года назад
There is no doubt that you do use the muscles of your neck to keep your balance and positioning while boxing. There’s a video on this channel about how to take a punch that shows a few neck exercises that may help. My guess is that the muscles of your neck are simply not used to being used like this. Over time your body should adapt and any discomfort should go away. Thanks for taking the time to watch 🙂🙂🙂😎

Hey, Mike. Thanks for the insight. I just finished watching the video you suggested. But I can't help but warn you about the dangers of performing "neck bridges". Many physiotherapists believe these types of exercises can lead to serious neck and vertebrae injuries. Pay careful attention to your neck. There are other better and safer alternatives for building a strong neck. I am very sorry for my bluntness. I am still an apprentice. I am sure you are a seasoned boxing expert. Thanks :)

Great video , easy to follow. Question on stance, when you mention legs wider than your shoulders, do you mean vertical or horizontal more wide ? i guess what i mean is have my legs spread more apart side to side than my shoulders or more front to back spread apart from my shoulder width ? thanks
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 7 лет назад
That is a great question and i should have made that more clear in the video; what i should have explained was that the diagonal length from the big toe of your lead foot to the heel of your rear foot should be wider than the width of your shoulders to ensure optimal balance.

That’s a good thing. That means that you are equally strong in both arms. If that’s the case I would lead with my left as it is much more common. It will make things easier when doing drills or mitt work with an orthodox training partner. Thanks for watching 😎😎😎

hey :) I noticed that I lose balance a bit in my stance when I'm stationary, my feet width and back is straight but if I sink my weight down then I kinda fall off balance if someone pushes me. what can I do to prevent this?
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 7 лет назад
You want to have your weight evenly distributed between both legs and have your legs diagonally apart. (and not in a line towards your opponent) We have a video on the angles of boxing that may help further demonstrate that. Also try keeping a slight bend at the knee to absorb any impacts of people trying to knock you off balance.

Can you please make video on how to fill a punching bag With what material And how should the base be filled With sand or clothes? Please help me out
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 6 лет назад
I think that I will definitely do that as a few people have asked for that video. It just may take some time to do and I don't want you to have to wait. The easiest and best way is to take some old clothes or rags and cut them up into long strips (2 to 3 inches wide) and then stuff them tightly into the bag. This will be more comfortable on your joints than the sand : )

@ramonrocha2070

Jason Suteja Definitely keep them relaxed. If you tense them up you will get tired faster. Use your hands to keep the head safe and when throwing a punch your shoulder should be positioned to take place of where your hand previously was.

My trainer has me bending my legs a good amount, and also has me put the majority of my weight on my back foot, otherwise, i tend to be leaning forward too much in my boxing stance. Are doing these 2 things correct? My rear quad is on FIRE 5 minutes into drilling. Does this mean I'm bending my legs too much? Or does this mean my legs just aren't strong enough?
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 3 года назад
It sounds like your trainer is telling you to do the right things. You want to have a slight bend at the knee and keep an even weight distribution between both legs. Yet when you’re moving forward your weight will often be shifted to your rear leg as you propel yourself forward. I think that you will find your body will soon adapt and you won’t feel as fatigued. Thank you for watching 😎😎😎

What if we kept our front heal little up ?
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 8 лет назад
Thanks for commenting; There are always different styles of boxing but you will find that the power from most of the punches come from the rotation of your hips and core. It will be more challenging to plant your feet and rotate your core with both heels up. If you kept only your front heel up you might find that it limits your mobility because you couldn't easily push off the canvas with your rear foot to pounce forward and your will also lose that power from your rear hand. if you do a quick RU-vid search you will find that the greats like Tyson, Frazier, and even Mayweather keep that rear heel up. Even boxers who dance on their toes like like the great Muhammad Ali will plant that front foot to throw power pounces.
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 7 лет назад
You could, but you won't be able to propel yourself forward as quick and you won't have as much power for your rear hand....but your lead hand will be in great position to throw a hard counter hook.
