I think another reason they were smiling and trying not to laugh was because in the rehearsal Solar's voice cracked on one of the high notes and everybody burst out laughing 😂😂
Solar is also an actress now so you're not wrong 😂, she's going to be in a horror movie and also she's been doing leads of musicals like Matahari and Notre Dame. Mamamoo had a bet for this is the last stage, anyone that drops their smile anytime for their stage will have to pay for food afterwards.

This live performance was done purposefully with huge smiles because this was the last performance during promos and they were serious for the live performances of AYA. They decided let’s do this with the biggest smiles we can muster. It was all for fun. That’s what they do.
The funny thing about this performance is during the live rehearsal Solar voiced cracked during one of the high notes and they all started laughing even their staff in the dressing room lol. And in the dressing room Solar was trying to redeem herself by hitting the note followed by Moon Byul and Hwasa trying to as well lol. It's on a MMMtv6 ep38
Unfortunately, in that live performance, moonbyul had an injured arm that's why she was using a hand mic instead of a head mic like the other members to limit the movement of her injured arm. But despite that she still slayed.
Aya has the most demanding choreo of any of their songs. When it was first presented their reaction was, "How can we do that and still sing live?" but they rose to the challenge. They do use the headset mikes (which they hate) for only the second time. Moonbyul unfortunately developed an RSI injury in her elbow so there are certain moves she is not doing in this live performance. Aya by the way means ouch. You might want to give their younger sister group Purple Kiss a try. They also have outstanding vocals and have a comeback on October 22. I'd recomend their debut Ponzona (Spanish for venom) or Sweet Juice as a first song.
I love the traditional version even more. You can find the song on their "I say MAMAMOO: The Best" album or the MAMA Award performance I mentioned you a couple of days ago.
Before their debut and for a good portion of their early years, mamamoo was actually considered one of the "ugly" groups. When their company CEO went around showcasing them, other companies wondered why they were even promoting them. Hwasa especially, was even petitioned to be removed at one point. That's why mamamoo really doubled down on being the best vocally and performance -wise. It wasn't until later that they overturned that title proving that confidence is the most beautiful make-up. 😊

During this live performance, they had a bet between them, to see who could keep smiling through the entire performance. THAT'S why they are all smiling (they usually, don't during this performance), then Solar's voice cracked, and they all lost it. Also this was an extremely hard promotion for them, especially Hwa Sa, because her Grandmother (who she was very close with) passed away, and they would be crying back stage, then have to go out, and perform (and sing live). SO they got a lot of nasty comments about their vocals, and saying it was proof they couldn't handle live vocals, and hard choreo, when it was because of such a sad personal situation in their lives.

Don't know who told you Hwasa is pronounced Hasa but that's incorrect. Wheein & Hwasa's names both start with the equivalent of "Wh" in English and when written in Korean alphabet the only difference in the first syllable is the vowel sound. You can think of Hwasa as similar to the first two syllables of wasabi with a touch of H breathiness at the beginning. I forget exactly why but Mamamoo decided to smile throughout this performance of Aya. As I recall it was either a bet or a challenge between the members, possibly because this is a breakup song and moomoos had teased them about how serious they had been in previous performances. Playing games with each other and joking with, teasing and pranking moomoos are high on the list of Mamamoo's favorite things to do. As advised in the chat you should definitely watch the MAMA award show performance even if you don't react to it. Aya is one of Mamamoo's most complex and difficult MVs to interpret. There are two main questions: why did they use an Arabian Nights concept and why do Solar, Moonbyul & Hwasa also play outlandish characters that have nothing to do with the Arabian Nights? Hwasa looks like a dominatrix dentist, Moonbyul like she wandered into Aya from the set of a Robin Hood movie, and Solar combines a Frida Kahlo unibrow with an Asian ghost. The solution to those questions needs to answer the questions of what the breakup has revealed to them about the relationship and how they're going to move past it and get on with their lives. Mamamoo was accused of cultural appropriation because of the Arabian Nights concept but as usual their knee-jerk critics missed the point entirely. The images in Aya aren't drawn from an authentic culture but rather from fantasies of the exotic East ranging from 19th & early 20th century orientalist art to the set & costume designs of the Ballets Russes in Scheherazade and other ballets to Disney movies. The point is that their love affair has been an illusion, a castle built on sand, a self-composed romance novel set to the compelling, sensual music of a snake charmer flute. They've been drugged by love and each member finds a different way of getting over the addiction. The clues to the members' solutions are in their actions: Hwasa painfully extracting rotten teeth by smashing Tooth gravestones with a pickaxe, Moonbyul shooting the arrow, and Solar stabbing the bowl at the end. I think the symbolism of Hwasa and Moonbyul's actions is clear but it took some research to figure out what Solar was up to. Solar said the unibrow was inspired by Frida Kahlo but didn't explain what Frida has to do with a breakup song. Moomoos said it's another example of Mamamoo challenging beauty standards but that doesn't explain what Frida or the unibrow have to do with a breakup song. Only Solar would combine the Asian belief that young female ghosts are haunted by lost love with the life of Frida Kahlo, who had a tumultuous marriage to Diego Rivera and lived much of her life in pain after a bus accident where her pelvis was impaled. Put them together in Solar's wild imagination and you get the final image where she exorcizes her lingering feelings by ritually impaling the bowl of her tears with a dagger. Wheein is the only pacifist in the bunch. Her journey takes her from a depressed, repressed and oppressed person who lives in the shadows wearing dark makeup, veils and hats to someone who magically lights up the room when she liberates herself. Love is usually risky business in Mamamoo songs and they typically don't indulge in greeting card cliches when falling in love (except in their love songs to moomoos 😏) or crying in your beer self-pity when falling out of love. Aya is a good example.

Mamamoo is the only girl group I listen to. Their voices are insane! Same like you, I also don’t like the “cutesy” thingy 😅 so Mamamoo’s best for us peeps who doesn’t like that. Hwasa’s my bias ,just sharing 👀 but the other members wreck me in different ways
I'm not sure who told you her name is pronounced without the w. You were pronouncing Hwasa correctly. Every interview/award show/BTS I've seen it's pronounced with the w. And don't worry about Mamamoo live performances and vocals. They favor their vocals over dance every time, they may have a backing track still playing depending on the venue or if they are feeling sick etc. But they always sing live. It's actually what they're known for. In the past they were actually criticized for their dancing skills because netizens believed their choreos were 'simple' due to their lack of dancing skills. The reality is that they choreographed most of their early works (due to their company being too small to afford a choreographer) so their dances weren't to the type of level professional choreographers typical do for groups; but also because they made sure to create dances that allowed them to still perform to the vocal level they wanted. So they avoided a lot of high intensity dance. This comeback for Aya was actually their first time doing a more intense choreo and their first time using the head mics instead of the handheld ones (apart from Moonbyul in this particular stage.) They switched it up to accommodate the more intense choreo. But yea, vocals is their focus. So much so that their most recent mini album and world tour were called Mic On- cause they ALWAYS perform live. ☺
This is a great song, one of my favorites. There are other awesome performances the AYA/Dingga aggrabah version is my favorite, it is both songs and its insane as they roll out on giant thrones to start it off. Solar has an acapella of this one on her Solarsido youtube channel, she sings and raps all of the parts for it.

They don't really like the head mics... they feel there is less control, and not always where they want them. They have been using hand held mics for so long, at first because they are cheaper... now because they perfer them(usually).
