That's what it shiuld be honestly. The female gaze is a term made about how women are presented in media and about giving female characters agency in their stories. Ain't got nothing to do with how you do your damn makeup...

I like my gf with no make up, natural beauty over make up any day for me, she thinks shes bad at putting makeup on, and doesn't like how she looks without it, but, she's beyond beautiful just naturally to me tbh.
I think that is the most important part of makeup, I personally think most people look great without it. But its all about the feeling of the person wearing it. It makes people happy so I think its worthwhile.
for me, i’d see “girl pretty” as more of those elaborate looks that guys say are “too much” or “high maintenance” like drawing on stars or incorporating lots of bright colours, that might just be me but i feel like when a girl sees a girl with eye catching makeup they think it’s gorgeous
Is like to add for clarification: appealing to the male gaze is largely dealing with physical health indicators (hence the idea of looking perfect) whereas appealing to female gaze is largely dealing with social status indicators. Both groups care about both, but the technical skill and money required for bright colors is going to appeal to women more on average and standard makeup that isn't going to be visually jumping out will appeal to men more on average. Please note both of these things vary wildly in importance to individuals. I feel like the video has an implication that men are more shallow than women. Individuals can be more or less shallow, but reality is that people are shallow as a whole. This is not an excuse to be mean to people, but is entirely fine for dating in our current culture because you should be attracted to someone when you start dating. Long term relationships don't necessarily need physical attraction once everyone's got to know each other better. Sorry about the tiny rant.

@bromance3496 The thing about appearance is that it's always shallow. Appealing to anyone means targeting people who are judging the attribute you're appealing. So honestly I'd disagree, judging appearance is shallow with any methodology. The same judgement used by men to judge a woman's attractiveness is used to judge other men's attractiveness even by heterosexual men. Same applies to women. It doesn't make it any less shallow to judge when you're not trying to get with the person. But then you have to define what it means to be shallow and why people have such a negative connotation associated with it. Although I'm kinda tired so I'm not sure if this makes any sense

Female gaze is all about masking actual imperfections, then drawing attention to features that could be misconstrued as imperfections for an extra hit of external validation.
Personally, I love it when women fully express themselves with makeup and go bold. I just think that's so beautiful because it shows how unafraid they are of expressing themselves.

Natural means no make up to me and some men I know. However, I will concede that most men don't know what women look like. My son's mother owned makeup, like a lot, I was always taking her to get it. She only ever did her eyebrows and she loved playing with eyeshadow. When I say playing, I mean she is extremely creative. She was always experimenting with different colors. I loved the artist in her. I am glad we split amicably and that we are still friends. Sorry for the rant, I just felt like I needed to say it where someone will see it. Good work, I like your video
@@brandocalrissian3294 The problem is that a lot of men don't know enough about makeup to realize when a woman is wearing a "natural" makeup look. Most men don't know what no makeup actually looks like and will believe that a woman with a full face of foundation, concealer, blush, mascara, and lip tint is wearing no makeup. And then when that woman takes her makeup off, she's insulted for her imperfections or told she looks sickly. I think the whole point of commentary on the "male gaze" is that men often THINK they want a natural woman, but they have no idea what a natural woman actually is because their perception of it is so skewed.

Can confirm as a guy: preferred without the makeup at all. Also, yes, when the makeup is finished, you do look better. But if I had to choose between waiting 2 hours to go anywhere, having to be careful about touching your face, smooching you, or ensuring the umbrella is always at the ready to protect your 2 hours of daily work, not to mention the taking the make up off stage Or just "hey, wanna go get a bite to eat?" "Yea sure! Where you wanna go?" I will always, 10000000% choose the latter. The only time I would consider which one I prefer, is for extremely important events, such as: our wedding (I don't care about other people's weddings), every 10th year anniversary, and just once every couple of months. If you want to feel pretty, by all means. But please, we're going taco bell at 11:00 PM, we're going through a drive through, please just get in the car and lets get some tacos, and yes, I know you're saying you want 0, I'm going to buy you 6, and a y left overs are mine for the taking, which means I ain't getting any.
@@44nereids So to make it simple: Currently, girls are over sexualized in the U.S. to the point of being uncomfortable. One of the very commonly observed traits from this, is that women, including young adult women (and even younger than that unfortunately) try their absolute best to get their hands on, and spend a considerable amount of time on their makeup. This comes at the cost of time, and generally the women believe being late but having great makeup, is better than being on time and meh or unfinished makeup. I grew up under the "15 minutes early is on time, on time is late, and Lord forgive those who are late" rule, so it physically and mentally hurts me to be late to events. So personally, I hate this trend for many reasons. It is worth noting that both genders are guilty of this nowadays, however this video is gravitating towards a female audience, so that's who I'll be talking about. I would also like to now preface this with the fact that, I was "the" straight male who helped his girl friends get boyfriends. If they needed help with makeup, I could try, their earrings or things are out of place, I was there. I was their wingman. There rarely was romantic involvement. I was loved but not loved by 90% of my female friends of which I had many, especially after they heard how I hooked up a childhood friend with her crush (it was really simply: I told her to be herself, I knew the dude liked her, I got roped into this weird situation where she explained to him I was actually her boyfriend, and then later down the line explained to him it was a farce, she actually had a crush on him, and she just isn't great under pressure). Girls may feel different about it, but when you're not entirely focused on making every spec of your face more perfect than it needs to be, watching someone put on makeup and occasionally hand them something or just wait, isn't exactly entertaining. But I digress. The reason I say this, is because between all of my experience with the opposite gender (of which I have at least 3 childhood female friends, 1 best friend, 40 friends, well over 100 associates, a few girlfriends, my Mom and extended family, but no wife yet) there has only ever been 5 women who have broken this rule. And 4 of them were Lesbian. And the 1 is currently 96 years old and stopped caring about makeup over a decade ago. She is just happy she gets to see her great grand children running around. Don't get me wrong, some get better with time, but they still spend a significant amount of time on makeup. My girlfriend would often times be nearly ready for work, look up at the clock, she has 30 minutes before she has to leave to be on time. She starts makeup, 40 minutes later, she looks up yells a profanity (depends on the day ig), then does what she can in 5 minites, heads out the door, and arrives 10 minutes late (which, again, in my eyes is actually 25 minutes late, but I digress). This didn't happen once, but dozens of times throughout the year, and it wasn't just the first or 2nd or 3rd, but all of them. How do I know the details so well? Because when they're in a rush trying to be there on time, I am the one forced to help them out (I work remotely). But when 99% of your sample size proves you right, well, it's almost like stereotypes exist for a reason. It's not like I think any less of women, but I just wanted to send a plea out to the gods if they had a heart, to PLEASE just let them not care every once in a while and let us be on time to an event for once. I'm tired of walking into a movie and realize we not only missed the commercials, but the first 5 minutes of the movie. We're in a dark room staring up at moving pictures for 2 hours, trust me, you're beautiful, and I love you, not for your makeup, so just spend 1 hour instead of 2, so we can be on time and have a good time in peace. :)

@@44nereids well, as a guy who had this exact same discussion with his girlfriend a few months ago, and with a girl in the office 2 weeks ago, I wrote down and kept track of every time when we went out, and the number of times that "weird" comment happened... Out of the combined 23 times recorded, I believe that comment rang true 21 times... It's crazy because they didn't believe me until I pulled out the notes and recordings... Crazy when you have the receipts... Anyways, not trying to pick a fight. You can call me weird, that's fine. As a man, no, the natural look means what it means, you look the best before any of the makeup starts. The two versions with makeup are just two versions of “girl pretty”, what girls think is pretty, and what girls think guys think is pretty. Guys really do just mean what they say.

Because makeup is so ubiquitous that it's jarring when some women don't wear it. Our expectations of what a woman actually looks like has become warped. If you stop wearing it, you will be doing some good and being part of the solution
I remember being on call with one of my close friends and her boyfriend walked into her room, and I heard him say (in Spanish, so.I'm just translated what I know--I am not fluent), "what are you wearing?" And she was like, "...what?" "Yeah the makeup. Ive never seen that look before. Do you like it?" ( "I wanted to try something new and I like it a lot!" I heard him chuckle and say, "You should, you look amazing" I asked her about it and she seemed so happy that he said that. She was trying a much bolder look than usual, and all he had to say was something good and if she liked it. Im so glad she's with him--they're made for each other ♡
This is a typical misunderstanding thay ine gets when they look on social media about what other people think instead of talking to people in real life.
Men like the natural look because it is consistent, you look good at all times. Women with makeup on all the time look ill without makeup. Looking average 100% of the time is better than looking gorgeous 60% of the time and ugly the other 40%.
All I know is that I’m definitely no because I fully understand both sides of this and regularly make arguments for both teams to try and help explain it all. And then get immediately de-railed by someone like Tim Henson or James Charles and then forget wtf I was talking about

Omm, no. As a man-generally, when we say "natural, no makeup", we MEAN it. I've been married for 13 years, my wife almost never wears makeup, and that's how I like it. I can spot foundation immediately, and I think it looks gross more often than not (including in this video). Now, I realize that some women have skin conditions that make them uncomfortable-if it truly helps them to put something on their skin, I can understand. I'd also say that using VERY light makeup under/around the eyes (and maybe on the lips) ONLY could perhaps be an exception if it's done very delicately and in keeping with a woman's natural features. But, makeup like what's show in this video-especially on the premise of doing it for men, because a woman is convinced she won't attract a man otherwise-is just...wrong. Or, said better, the men to whom that applies are generally NOT the type of men you'd want to be attracting! Just my two cents. To be clear, I have no moral objection to makeup. Nor do I think it's a bad thing to want to look nice (especially for someone you care about). I just think it's sad when women cake it on because they believe that's the only way to be attractive-and are convinced that it's men who are driving them to do it. That may be true of a vocal minority of men, but, again, not the ones that matter. I hope more women wake up and realize that.
As someone who used to do full face and now never wears makeup or prefers the minimal look it’s up to the user. It is confusing to me when I see someone with no scarring or discoloring putting on 4 layers of foundation. No one needs that much. I used to have the worst acne ever and even I didn’t use that much and it never affected me romantically and u could see I was covering something up. Unless ur on the red carpet full coverage is not necessary. Wouldn’t yall like to scratch an itch without worrying about scraping off foundation. If u can scrape it off. Ur wearing too much. Done 😂
I've never actually known of an example of this 'when men say they want no make up they mean' and then list whatever version they think it means. It honestly seems like something women made up at this point. Not all women surely, I'd lean on it more likely being...well...people who want to sell makeup.
I can't speak for the rest of male society, I have always found my wife and any girl I've been with beautiful however they're most comfortable, but personally have always loved them completely bare with every freckle, flaw and perfect imperfection just as it is. That's just me
i get that the men in who say things like this mean it in good faith when they say "you don't need makeup, i love you for the way you look naturally", but in the reality of it, it can tend to come off as if they think all women only wear makeup because of insecurities, and that they need someone to tell them "put the palette down, you're gorgeous the way you are!" in that case it can come off a little condescending, because every person i've known who uses makeup has used it to simply express themselves, make themselves happy, or to just add some pop to an outfit. we don't have to urge women who use makeup to stop using it just because we think their natural beauty is pretty. makeup for a good majority of women is just another accessory to their outfit, and it shouldn't matter whether or not they wear it, or how much of it they use.
Those are all just rationalisations. Women wear makeup because they look better with it. Simple as that. If they said that, though, the jig would be up.
Only a woman will say “I like no makeup” means wearing makeup 🤦🏽♂️ we can tell if you have makeup on, even if it’s minimal. When we say we like you better WITHOUT MAKEUP it means NO MAKEUP.

I think this is backwards. Men I’ve dated-or just been friends with-have all preferred to see me (and women in general) without makeup on my face. The most I ever wear with my boyfriend is a little mascara and lip gloss when we go out somewhere. I think women put way too much pressure on themselves and other women to look perfect because we’ve been fed toxic consumerist lies that women should look a certain way. ❤ I think we are all beautiful the way we are with or without makeup ❤

actually as guys (at least me) i love it when my girlfriend has absolutely zero makeup on and that's why i say i like her natural face with no makeup i don't say hey i want your face to look perfect but not look like makeup
Personally im not a fan of the "girl pretty" version. Its more harsh and the eyebrow actually kinda looks like every disney villain ever. Lol super high arch, but only on the outer edge...im a face painter and we always call that the "evil eye" lol
