Boz is my favourite of all time. I have seen him perform live many times. I am rebuilding my record collection ensuring that I obtain all of Boz's albums. My favourite album Mazzy is one of the four you did not rank. I am waiting somewhat impatiently for the vinyl release of "Fade Into Light". Check it out again, Mazzy. It is an absolute smooth delight.
That intro to "Lowdown" with the drums and popping bass gets me every time. It just explodes. And it's such a killer song that was all over the R&B radio stations in 1976. It became such a funky summer groove and was easily one of the finest soul records of that year.
Boz is one of my favorites. I still listen to his music often. "The Dukes of September" tour brought together three of my all-time loves: Boz, Donald Fagen & Michael McDonald.
Glad you did Boz! His smooth voice is just fantastic. I’ve been listening since “Boz Scaggs and Band” which was 1970 or 71. Great album. I have a hard time pinning down my fav songs. Miss Sun, Pain Of Love, Ask me nuthin, I got your Love. I mostly come in with the 70s. “My Time” is fantastic, “Slow Dancer”
Thanks Mazzy for schooling me on Boz Scaggs. I'm sixty-five, have Silk Degrees, had Middle Man, but forgot he was with Steve Miller, and also he did his debut in 69 with Duane Allman! I've got some more shopping to do! Thanks again, brother!
Mazzy, thanks for showcasing one of my absolutely favorite artists. In 1971 I was a sophomore at Tulane in New Orleans. I loved my freshman year, but over the summer between the two years I met the girl who would become my wife. When I left for my sophomore year I was beside myself yearning for this girl. She was back in Florida starting her freshman year. I moved out of the dorms and took a basement apartment near campus, (probably the only basement apartment in all of New Orleans.) It was before cell phones, remember, so calling my girl friend was cost prohibitive…so we wrote back and forth. Back to Boz. I owned a suitcase record player, made of plastic with a single oval speaker in the front. My future wife and I were big fans of the Moments album so I, in my misery, would sit in my basement apartment, play the Moments album on the crap record player and send lovelorn letters back to Florida. Moments was my solace, a focus for my misery, and a hope for the future. I have Moments on CD now. I think it will always be an album I will love…even though it’s steeped in my personal angst and broken heartedness. The best thing about listening to it now is my wife and I listen to it together, even 53 years later. It’s our album…and thanks to Boz for such a fine album and so many other fine albums.
Hello from the UK where Boz Scaggs is very underrated so I was able to pick up 9 of his records on vinyl for less than £10 each, including Memphis! I love the diversity of his music and it is difficult to rate his albums in any sort of order but I do really like Memphis and Slow Dancer. Unfortunately the pressing quality on Boz Scaggs is not brilliant but I got that mainly for 'Give me a dime' which is brilliant. Keep up the good work, I've not seen many reviews on Boz Scaggs' albums.
'Boz Scaggs & Band' - my absolute favorite! Nothing else comes close. It's so full of juice. I enjoyed watching you fondly describe it. 'Why Why'..so FUNKY BLUE.
Boz' voice always brings to mind Billy Paul, to me. I love Memphis and Out Of The Blues. I grew up with Steve Jordan. My father and his father were best friends!!
I just got into him and bought two of his albums on vinyl after I got into Rita Coolidge. I've really enjoyed her quite a bit and I heard of Boz. I'm glad I checked out some of his stuff but I don't know much about him. Thank you!
Thanks, Mazzy. I loved the songs that I'd heard from Boz. I knew Loan Me A Dime from the Duane Allman's Anthology. For whatever reason, I had not bought any of them until after I bought and loved Silk Degrees. I didn't care much for what I heard of Down Two Then Left and lost rack of him. You let me know on this video that he had dropped out for 8 years. I either read a review or heard something from Memphis, and bought it. What an album! I love the whole record, but espoecially enjoy his take on Steely Dan's Queen Of The Quarter. I love those first few albums, but slow dancer is, like you said, something outstanding. In my mind he is a crooner, with a knack for giving his all to blues, soul, and rock. We're All Alone, and especially Harbor Lights for example. I've had Jump Street running through my head since I started watching this. Have you heard the Boz album from 65? It was originally released in one of the Scandinavian countries, I think Norway. I have never heard it. I was lucky enough to se him and his backing band in 2022 at a relatively small venue here in Colorado Springs, 1,918 seats. I was expecting to see a great show, and they blew me away. The gentleman (kid) who played lead wasn't Duane, but you almost couldn't tell the difference on Loan Me A Dime.
Another great video Mazzy about an artist who remains underrated at least in the UK. Thank you. His self titled album is my favourite and I would rate it as a masterpiece. Did you know another SF conection to this album. Donna Jean Thatcher is on backing vocals who went on to join the Dead as Donna Jean Godchaux and marry Keith.
Finally! Love Boz. The fact that you can hardly get any new quality pressings of his work is a crime. The AP 75th will be a must but so much of his work also needs some love as well. Anyone listening with some sway needs to make this happen please!!
Solid run down for one of the truly great vocalists. Just listened to Middle Man/Silk Degrees/Down Two, Then Left back-to-back. I know DTTL got a mention but surprised it didn't make the cut. Buy hey it's your list. Thank Mazzy!
Boz is a fairly recent discovery for me. I knew of Lido but that was about it....until I saw/heard " Desire " quite by accident on RU-vid. I immediately bought the Dig album, and now I'm only missing 2 or 3 from his catalogue. My favourites ( at the moment) are Dig, Some Change and Come On Home. It's so nice to discover a new (to me) favourite artist at 55 years old. I have indeed been missing out......... I'm now going to listen to Boz Scaggs Band album again, after your glowing review. Love your channel.😊
Well done Mazzy. My #1 is Moments. Downright Women is my favorite song on that record. I had my copy professionally cleaned but it didn't make much of a difference. His previous album, Boz Scaggs, sounds wonderful with my Speakers Corner version. I wish they would do Moments. BTW, Fade Into Light, is a wonderful record and I think you may want to give it another listen. The quality of the cd I have of it is audiophile quality for a cd. Joe
Sir Mazzy. For me this ranks in your top ten vids. I am a huge Boz Scaggs fan. I personally turned on many friends early onto to Boz. I have a copy of Moments - Japanese pressing . Huge improvement sonically. One Boz catalog unit missed on your count down (in my humble opinion) - Boz Scaggs Greatest Hits Live. In my personal top 5. I have the DVD and the double CD versions. Year 2004. Recorded at Great American Music Hall. San Francisco.
Appreciate you doing this…I’ll pay more attention to the rest of his catalog. Regarding Silk Degrees…yeah it’s slick but it was out my senior year of high school and had a devout following among the girls I knew…if it was important to them, it was important to me 😉 I’d be happy to see I remastered version come out.
Thanks! I was just chatting with my older brother about Steve Miller and Boz Scaggs and what long and varied careers both of them have had, yet most people only know a couple of their songs.
Great show, Maz. I’m a huge Boz fan and have a primo copy of Memphis on vinyl (can’t believe the current price). Saw Boz live in 1977 at William and Mary Hall with Player as the opening act. Keep up the great work.
I never heard the Moments album and took your advice and found a mint copy. Thank you…..I have a great new album for the collection. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on music. You’re doing great work!!!
Hi Mazzy - long time - no speak.... Hey, Boz is sooooo very cool. We saw him in 2006, or so, (as I recall...) at a theatre in Philly. He was absoltuley great. But the unique thing was at that show, he played at such an LOW volueme.... it was the most unique show that I've seen in that regard ,in my life - but he was great. Boz is cool. I love that "Dig"album, so many fantatic songs on there, "King of El Paso" among them.. And, as far "Silk Degrees" goes - we LIVED with that album in my dormatory at college in those years - so many great memories of that, and that time in '77, and onward. Okay, I gotta get that "Fool to Carel" record!!!! Peace out from over here on the East Coast, my brother....
Had stopped listening to Boz Scaggs, but this video inspired me to check out my records and youtube for newer material based on your recommendations. Ordered 'Dig' on ebay and it is winging its way to me and came across 'Out of the Blues' in a bargain bin today. I saw the 'Silk Degrees' tour in the 70's and he put on a great concert, but I am probably too familiar with the album finding the early and later material more interesting
Fall of 1971, student at Tulane, living in a basement apartment in New Orleans…pining for the girl who would become my wife,. I was lonely and broke, fighting with my Dad…had a single speaker suitcase record player. The album for that time for me, the one that was on that sucky record player was “Moments” by Boz Scaggs. I love that album. (My solace album!)
Love Boz. First song of his I heard on the radio, early 70's . Loved it but didn't catch the name of it. Checked the back covers of his albums a few years later and couldn't find it. Later on found out it's I'll be Long Gone, which he only says in the first line. Thought the name was Make my Life Shine. Great song !
Aloha Mazzy, Awesome ranking of your Boz Scaggs record albums. I enjoyed his official debut w/ Duane Allman. That being said. I enjoy Johnny Bristol's works, I even have a Buddy Miles record album called (All the faces of buddy Miles) , with the hit song "pull yourself together" on Columbia records. thanks to Johnny Bristol brings the soul out of Buddy miles singing. Thanks for sharing another great video. Mahalo Ed
I have always loved Boz. All of it. Grew up in the 70s, and Silk Degrees was everywhere. But his voice continues to be great and his latter LPs are a treasure. Agree with you. He doesn't disappoint. He's just a real pro and an adult. Great video. Thanks.
Some Change is my favorite Boz Scaggs album. It’s incredible, especially the title track. Come On Home was the follow-up album to Some Change and equally good. Toto’s first album is fabulous. I suggest a second listen. Jimmie Rodgers was The Singing Brakeman.
BOZ wrote Stepping stone for Steve Miller's Children of the future album. It was noted by Booker T. in the 1968 Rolling Stone interview in which the Mgs discussed a variety of records.
I really enjoued your rankings of Boz. I have enjoyed and followed his career since that 1st album. You also mentioned his time with the Steve Miller band, i agree. His Sailor album also has 2 different covrrs & names. Besides Sailor, thete is also the same album, slightly different cover ,called Living In The USA. On that album, if you listen with headphone to the 1st song, " Song For Our Ancestors " you can actually " hear the sun rise!" [ at least you could when i was a college student. One of your best episode's.
Thanks for exposing folk to the great Bozman. He is undervalued as a singer and writer, no question, But I'm wondering how you missed "Some Change". There's not a bad song on it and it reveals the breadth of his tastes. I hope you'll track it down sand grab up a copy.
This episode reminded me that I haven't played my Boz Scaggs LP's in a while. I have only 3 of his LP's in my modest collection (Boz Scaggs, Moments, and My Time). I remember first hearing "Loan Me a Dime" (with that great Duane Allman solo) on FM radio back in college and bought his self-titled LP for that song. These days I listen mainly to jazz, pop/vocal, and Brazilian but your episode has inspired me to dust off my Boz Scaggs LP's and give them a spin.
Mazzy by watching your videos over the years I found out that we have 3 things in common...well, sort off. Pop/rock artist with the most LP's in personal collection: Beatles (I have 17). Jazz artist with the most LP's in collection: Miles Davis (24). Like I said my collection is modest. Last thing is we are both turning 70 this year (me In November). So happy 70th to both of us!
Thanks, so much!! Boz is my favorite male vocalist and I love almost all of his music. I think you might mean Jo Baker from Elvin Bishop's band at the time. I see several others say good things about Some Change, absolutely worth a listen. Boz, the real Boss! peace
I have or have heard most of these. Agree, there is no bad Boz. My no. 2 is Memphis, just hangs together in a special way, great tunes, Boz sounds great, really warm and soulful. No. 1 is Down Two Then Left. Heard Silk Degrees dozens of times when it was released, loved every song. This came out and sounded like a dud. No hits, nothing obvious jumped out. Never got rid of it though and would play it from time to time. Finally it stuck and today I absolutely love it. I can play it start to finish and then over again. Is it “great”? Who knows and I sure don’t care. It is my go to Boz and probably a top 50 album for me. Plus, for obvious reasons, the vinyl is dirt cheap 😂
So glad you’re covering Boz Scaggs, such a great musician and so underrated as so. I also like Moments by Boz Scaggs, I had a Japanese reissue on CD that was a lot brighter sounding when I lived in Seattle. My uncle David got me into Boz back in the late ‘70s early 80’s, he had Silk Degrees and the follow up on 8 track.
So happy to see someone finally ranking the albums of my favorite vocalist, Boz Scaggs, but the task is much easier when you’re leaving out Some Change and Fade Into Light, both of which are in my own top five. It’s like trying to rank the Beatles albums without having to include Rubber Soul and The White Album.
@@mazzysmusic You won’t regret it, except you might need a new ranking. I am with you on Slow Dancer though. I’ve always been a fan ever since I saw you praising Springsteen’s Western Stars,” another gem that doesn’t get its due.
Mazzy! The Brian Jonestown Massacre…great band and glad they got a mention. May I suggest you and anyone else who hasn’t seen it: they have a song called Plan B which i don’t think is on any of their albums but is on RU-vid and the video with it appears to be a bunch of girls in San Fransisco c1967 and it sounds, to me at least, perfectly set as if it was a 1967 piece of music….find it on RU-vid and see what you think
Nice video on a artist who doesn’t get enough recognition for his art!! I remember seeing Boz preform in Oakland playing his Slow Dancer LP live in a tuxedo Great show!!
You mentioned a purge. Is that important due to self imposed restraints or some other reason, such as taste changes? Steve Miller is on my top ten bands!!
"Middle Man" is incredibly strong to start, but just drops like a rock by the end. Uneven with some great highlights. Wish you would have kept "Other Roads." Despite the MOR feel, there are some very interesting textures at times there.
Hey Mazzy, I can tell you the Australian pressing of _Moments_ is also _muddy_ , funny that. Also 'Down Two Then Left ' (that I actually love) also sounds SOOOO THIN -a remaster of that would be great !
Hey Mazzy fantastic video. At the end there I think you meant to say Slow Dancer not Silk Degrees. I remember you did a thing on Boz Scaggs a few years ago. I'm a huge fan with most of his albums just missing a few of the newer ones. My favorite has always been My Time. It just gets me every time I throw it on. Anyway I'm heading to Seattle tomorrow for my daughter's graduation. I missed you when you came to Vancouver. I did send you an email but my account was acting up and apparently you never got it. I know it's a little short notice now but it would be an honor to meet up with you.
Everything Bill Schnee touches is gold... Joe Sample "Ashes to Ashes" ... 3 of Pablo Cruise albums are amazing. Place in the Sun Worlds Away, Part of the Game...great stuff
Well, I think his later albums are not as commercial as Silk Degrees. Boz has been making a lot of blues based music and he did an album or two of jazz standards. I think it’s safe to say that there will not be a Silk Degrees part 2
Maz it is so bizzare you bring up the sound quality on Moments . I felt the same way since the day I bought it!! I’am a huge Boz fan I have them all ! was a little taken back you choice Slow Dancer as number one lp. I haven’t listen to that record in a long time I will today . The song slow dancer is one of my all time favorites. It’s been in my bands set list for years
I agree the “boz scaggs” is best. I bought it new as a ‘cut-out’ clipped corner record that did not sell well. I always thought that scene look like Russian hill by coit tower. While I discover while I lived in San Francisco for 20 years. Btw did you ever go to Boogalu’s ?
One miss--kinda, as it is not an album...however, I think that "As the Years go Passing By", that Boz recorded live with Booker T & The MG's is on the same level as Loan me a Dime and Steve Cropper's solo is very very tasty.
Right. So you're a HUGE Boz Scaggs fan even though you're not including 4 albums on this list because, you know, reasons (particularly Down Two Then Left, which, had you included, might have lent some legitimacy to this exercise). And I love the part where his albums of standards rank solidly in the middle of his entire catalogue. Mm-hm. Also, yes, calling Slow Dancer Silk Degrees several times while holding physical copies of it in your hand probably means you should see a physician. But what a GREAT VIDEO from a guy who clearly loves music.
Yes I tripped over my lips and included an * with a correction in the description about exchanging the wrong album title. Mistake. Since I don’t have four records I didn’t include them since I haven’t listen to them in decades. I’ll seek them out.
Greetings from San Francisco! I understand your heartstrings will forever be attached here, but if I want to listen to Soul or Blues, I listen to Black Soul and Blues, and Black Fusion. Blue-Eyed Soul and Blues rarely appealed to me; including Boz Scaggs. Plus, Anyone associated with Jann Wenner kills my interest. PS! Yes, I spent time at the Blue Light while living on Union Street, North Beach for 6+ years.
I saw Boz play at the Paramount theather in early 70s with Les D. I saw the show several times in the same week. The last song in the show was apparently never released. Do you know its name and where to find it?
I don't know why Mazzy keeps apologizing for liking great records. When I was at the college FM, at least some of us student DJs were happy to play *Silk Degrees* in the same hour (but probably not the same *set* ) as a cut off The Jam's *Setting Sons* (BTW, I haven't replaced either of those LPs in my library with CDs... yet!)
