That's a good idea, thanks for the tip. My next step will probably be wet forming though. A couple viewers recommended it so I'm going to give it a shot. I have some Sno Seal leather treatment on the way and hope to give it a try this weekend. Thanks for your comment!
I agree with this suggestion. If you shortened the post strap and removed the original post hole, the retaining top strap would be synching down more on the knife and not the sheath. That thicker leather is awesome in some regards and bulky in others.
Thanks for the tip. I’ll be trying it this afternoon. I’m still planning on making a more bushcraft style sheath, but your mod will make me more comfortable until then.
Sounds like a good project! I should really get into making my own sheaths, since sometimes that's the only thing keeping me from using an otherwise great knife. Tightening the strap at least makes this sheath usable. I wouldn't have been confident in it as it came. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Aside from the looseness of the retention strap, for the small amount of money BPS charges, they use really nice hardware on that sheath. That Chicago type screw pin could have been permanently pressed in instead of screwed in to save manufacturing costs. BPS certainly gives the customer their money's worth, IMO.
A drill or leather hole punch tool is much faster. You might also consider wet forming the sheath, provided its not yet been treated with any oils. Because you can then snug everything up, let it dry and oil it and it will be as good as new.
I don't have any leather punches, but I've used drills on thick leather before. In this case it was just one little hole and it seemed easier just to grab my Swiss Army Knife and use the awl, but there's definitely something to be said for using the right tool for the job. I've thought about trying wet forming, but so far I haven't done any of that. Maybe it's time to give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion!
