多謝你對 Brother Gregory 的專訪，他是我中三至中五的校長，Brother Edward 是我中四（1972-73）的班主任，亦多謝你發掘到兩篇雜誌文章，是有關李小龍在中學時的校際西洋拳比賽。Thanks for your interview of Brother Gregory (he was my school headmaster from Form 3 to 5), and data found in the 2 old Chinese magazines confirming a few things for me - that the intermural boxing tournament was indeed held in 1958, and it was a 3-round match, and Lee’s return to St Francis was indeed on 28 February 1973. I am the author of a Chinese book “李小龍年譜 (Bruce Lee Chronicle)” (Chung Hwa Books, 2017) and a number of articles about Lee published in Hong Kong’s Chinese press since 2008. I am a 1974 grad of St. Francis Xavier, but thus far I have no luck in confirming the year and any detail of the boxing tournament with the current school admin staff (but I’m sure they have tried their best). St Francis still can’t locate the trophy (sort of a plaque) of that boxing tournament, as photographed in one of the old magazines. As a rule with St. Francis, the school would keep and display all trophies in a glass window located near the school’s main entrance (along the staircase), like all of those basketball trophies of the 1970s and 80s. In my writing, I came across a couple of English articles written by someone who knew some eyewitnesses of the match and some background info (also friends or schoolmates of Lee). With your discovery of these two magazine articles as collaborating sources, now I can definitely ascertain that most of the other details in those English articles are highly credible too. Thanks. However, the 1959 Spotlight（銀燈） Weekly article did not mention 4 pertinent things: (1) Lee did not win by knocking out Gary Elms, he won by points, and thus the match lasted the entire 3 rounds. Lee complained to his friends after the match that the boxing gloves cushioned too much the power of his punches. (2) Lee only won the champion of his weight class in 1958, as there were at least one other heavier weight classes in that tournament. (3) Elms was from King George V School, so there were at least 3 schools participating - St. George (the host of the tournament), King George V, and St. Francis Xavier. (4) According to the above-mentioned English articles and a few others, Lee was really hoping to fight Peter Burton, a student of St. George and a much more formidable opponent. But not to be, because Burton was of a heavier weight class, and also indeed a multiple-year champion like Elms. Burton’s son, in a wbesite’s discussion board in recent year, confirmed his father’s champion status in this tournament for 5 consecutive years (1957-61), and he still had his father’s medals. Regarding the story about Lee’s admission that an accidental elbow helped him to win the 1958 intermural boxing match, I can definitely attest that Lee did not tell such story on stage during his 1973 prize presentation ceremony at St. Francis, because I was there. I received 5 or 6 medals from Lee that day, and thus shook his hand that many times. As there were over a thousand students attending, I was ordered by Mui Sir (our physical ed teacher, the school’s disciplinary supervisor, and one of the presenters on stage) to stand close to the stage together with all other medal recipients (so that it wouldn’t take us forever to walk up to the stage, and wasting everybody’s time, as there were so many medals to hand out that day). I watched the whole thing maybe 5 feet from Lee, and I do not recall he told such story (indeed, Lee did not say much on stage during the entire presentation). The above-mentioned English articles also did not mention such story. I believe such accidental elbow (knocking Elms out) did not happen, because Elms was not knocked out (maybe knocked down once or twice) and Lee won by points only. However, I can believe that Lee was possibly warned a few times during the match (as the Spotlight Weekly article suggested that Lee tried to hold down his opponent’s head). But such warnings are common in amateur fights, and very likely Elms also received some warnings too. About the story Lee declined doing gong-fu demo (kicks) on stage - it was suggested in the 1975 Ming Pao Weekly article because Lee was afraid he might rip his pants in doing so. That also did not happen. I heard nobody asking him to do such demo on stage, whereas such demo would be highly disrespectful (forget about pants ripping). Lee returned to St. Francis out of his respect to Bro Edward and the school, he wouldn’t do any such stupid demo. It seems to me that this 1975 Ming Pao Weekly piece may contain a lot of hearsay, as the author chose not to disclose his real name. If he did, many of the St. Francis alumni might have called him out. I cannot make out clearly the Chinese characters of his piece in detail from this RU-vid clip, but for sure in the first sentence he provided an additional confirmation to the date of Lee’s visit (28 February 1973). I did not write down the exact date in my own diary (I only wrote a weekly summary journal that year), but I came across an English book written in 1974 by 2 British journalists whom interviewed Bros Edward and Gregory shortly after Lee’s death and they stated that date.
