I used to listen to Brad Goode at the Green Mill in Chicago in the 90's. He was WICKED good. Dude was tearin' up in those days. He's only gotten better since then. Glad to hear his wisdom in this interview.
What an interesting re-think of jazz education. Regarding the final comments: I only taught at a junior high level, but I can relate to what you are saying about mentoring. At times I brought in some of the local pros to work with my students. The smartest pros were ones who were the most encouraging. They could see that the future of the music, the mentoring of future colleagues and a grooming of a future jazz audience audience could depend on inviting new people into the music, rather than intimidating them away.
