Bradford Pear Natural Edge Bowl

In this video, I turn a natural edge bowl from a bradford pear crotch. The tree was downed by a storm in Plano, TX, then cut up by a tree surgeon and left by the curb. The homeowner called me and I was able to salvage some of the wood before the tree company hauled it off. This bradford pear has amazing figure and the wood is simply a pleasure to turn.

I'm sure you will, Marty. Keep turning and you will get there. I have only been turning for 3 1/2 years so it is possible to learn the craft quickly if you stick with it and turn as much as you are able.

Eric, the chainsaw is an old beater. You can get a good electric saw in the 16" range for $50-$75 at any lowes or home depot. Please be careful! Shear scraping is a great technique whereby the edge of the scraping tool is presented at a 45 (approx) degree angle to the wood with light pressure. The shavings produced are fine and if done properly, you can skip straight to 220 grit sandpaper. The technique is explained in detail in David Ellsworth's book. I highly recommend it.

George, that chuck is a one way stronghold with tower jaws. I don't use the jaws for a better hold on soft wood, but rather to increase space between the check and stock. I suppose they could help grip softer wood by allowing a bigger tenon, but that improvement would be marginal in my opinion. Cheers! Chas

Thanks Roman. As a friend once told me, "perfect isn't beautiful". I love preserving the natural beauty and characteristics of the wood in the final design. To some people they are flaws, to me, they are reminders that the piece was made from a living thing, not a mold.

David, generally speaking, the thinner the piece, the less chance of cracking. It's important to turn the bottom slightly thinner than the walls. I did not wrap the bowl, I simply oiled it and let it dry. It took approx. two weeks.

My technique is simple. I take the bowl out of the jaws and open them up a little. Then I turn the bowl around and sandwich a square of thin foam (like shelf lining) between the open jaws of the chuck and the inside of the bowl. I bring the tailstock up and press the bowl towards the chuck. The foam provides traction and protects the bowl's inner surface. I turn and sand the bottom leaving only a tiny nub at the live center point. That is easily power sanded away. Done.

green wood (or rather wood that is not dry and seasoned) is easier to turn. We paint the endgrain of logs with greenwood sealer or paint to slow the drying process so we can turn the wood before it dries out. If you are interested in woodturning, my advice is to find a club in your area and become an active member. Most clubs have members who will mentor new members. There is a lot to learn, but a few hands-on sessions with an experienced turner will put you on the right path. Cheers!

That's right... the wood was not very wet, I turned the wall to about 3/8" thick so it was not likely to crack as it dried. The wood did move a little (that is to say it changed shape) as it dried, but that only enhances natural edge bowls in my opinion.

Nice work I'm just starting to turn a couple of bowls out of a green maple crotch. to speed up drying after I get them roughed out I just spin them in the lathe for a couple hrs at 1500 rpm if I have the time. Beautiful bowl. How did you reverse mount it to turn the bottom? It didn't look like you used a jam chuck or anything... I'm just starting out with turning bowls, and I've been using an expanding dovetail chuck and just leaving that cutout on the bottom. It looks okay, but it's not as nicely finished as your result.

Great video & great job !. I like your reply on a Cheryl Baker comment I always wanted to learn woodturning . A question if you are working on a chunk of wood recently cut , how do you avoid the cracks , when it happens is really frustrating , after all the work done I have to dump it . I don't mind the music , but instead you explain the process as you are doing the job will be great .
@chas6444
@chas6444 9 лет назад
Alberto Moradillo you must dry the wood slowly to reduce cracking. I rough turn most of my bowls, then coat them with green wood sealer (Anchorseal) completely and put them on the shelf. Depending on the thickness, some take one or two years to dry. Drying slowly allows the wood to warp a bit and reduces cracking. When wood drys too fast, even flexible woods will crack. A final note, just because a bowl cracks while drying doesn't mean you have to throw it away. Find creative ways to fill the cracks and you may end up with something nicer than you imagined in the first place.

I cut down to about 3/4 inch & slowly dry in microwave.... 45 sec in, 20 min out ( or more, let it cool completely) & then 20 sec in, 20 min out, 15 sec in 20 min out & do the 15 sec several times with the 20 min cool.... until it no longer steams or feels wet. you can also weigh on scale & when the wt no longer drops it is dry. Then I finish my turning. so far so good. I usually do several items at once... but only 1 item in the micro at a time. I go watch tv or read while they cool. I put them on a cookie rack to cool, bowl up... we have lots of Bradford pear here in E Tn, love it.

(its just what i had) so do i have to wait 2 years for it to dry now? can i just turn it wet and rub oil on it? what kind of oil? theres just so much info out there that i'm totally confused on where to go from here. oh and what is tool called for turning bowls?
@123hurst3
@123hurst3 6 лет назад
I noticed you turned to final thickness while still wet, I assume you just live with whatever distortion occurs. I have always have checking problems with Bradford Pear using the wall thickness =10% of the diameter rule of thumb and then drying. I think for my next one I will just go for final thickness in one pass and get some anchorseal on it immediately. The fruitwoods do seem to be more prone to cracking. I seem to have the best luck turning to 10% wall thickness (maybe a bit thinner) and then into an alcohol bath for 24 hours, remove for an hour or so to allow the alcohol to evaporate completely and finally coat with green wood sealer. Bradford Pear is hard to dry without checks, I loose a high percentage of my blanks.

jmbcorreia72 - thanks for the email. No damage to the interior if you have some soft material between the jam chuck and bowl. I use spongy shelf liner. You can’t turn it fast or take deep cuts, but it works fine for slow and steady turning. Cheers!

does woodturning require a lot of physical strength? any suggestions for someone just starting? bowl is beautiful! any concerns about cracking during the drying process? thank you!
@chas6444
@chas6444 10 лет назад
If done correctly, the turning process does not require much strength. Lifting heavy logs or blanks and positioning them on the lathe can be difficult. But luckily, most turning blanks are small and quite manageable. If you are thinking of taking up woodturning, I have two suggestions, find a class near you and learn the basics. Most intro classes supply the lathe, tools, and wood. Second, find a woodturning club in your area and attend a meeting. Ask if anyone in the club mentors new turners. You can avoid a lot of frustration by getting a good fundamental introduction to woodturning. As for cracking,, it is always a concern. It's possible to mitigate the risk, but cracks happen. Understanding why the happen and how to deal with them is important to anyone who turns bowls from green or found wood. Good Luck! Let me know how it goes.
@cherylbaker7995
@cherylbaker7995 10 лет назад
Chas Thornhill thank you for your response...and the great advice! i'll do a little research...see who's in the area... is most turning done on green wood? I'm thinking it's softer, and easier to work with. but if the wood was already dry, cracking might not be such a concern? I WILL let you know how it goes! : )

I have a piece of Bradford Pear from a fallen tree. We ripped it down today to leave a good size 4x4 (ish) section and also a few pen blank sized pieces. I've never turned this before and I'm relatively new (focusing now on pens since I'm limited on my elderly shopsmith w/o a chuck) 1) how do I maximize the pretty oxidization of that wood before sealing the pens? 2) any suggestions for this wood? I can turn maple easily for pens. :)
@chas6444
@chas6444 7 лет назад
Kerry Hurley, sorry for the late reply. For the oxidation, I would sand the blanks to the desired finish, then leave them exposed to the air before applying finish. The wood will darken naturally. For the other piece, you might try a pepper mill...
