“Ranbir Kapoor’s refusal to commit to an archetype”? You lost me there. Nearly all his movies he plays the archetype of confused manchild finding purpose in life in a coming of age story. Which he once again does in Brahmāstra. Sure his movies may be different genres, but that’s due to the director. Ranbir more or less is playing a similar type of character in nearly all his films.

When will Bollywood understand that huge budgets, big production houses and a great cast still can't compensate for the lack of a good script/ screenplay. Despite the gargantuan scale, effort, talent and money Bollywood has, the one main problem that hinders them from achieving the audience's undivided attention is the lack of detailing in films. I've noticed this in the recent Hindi movies from the past 2-3 years. Their conceptualisation is fantastic, but the lack of attention to detail is jarring. This movie seems to have a lot of this issue from the few reviews I've watched. Will have to manage my expectations before I step into the theatres to watch it this weekend. (Yes, I'll still watch it because I'll root for Hindi films despite all odds).

Spot on. Lack of nuance and refinement is there in Hindi movies. It has become more prevalent in recent times due to fast paced production and general lack of depth in day to day life of creative people. It shows in the work. I didn't 100% like Baahubali Hindi version either...despite its success it lacks layers and refinement in language. Scale is not guarantee of immersion of senses. I still watch old DD TV shows and movies because their stories are meaningful...

I would actually give it 2/5. I gave Bollywood a benefit of doubt. I will try to give the review without spoilers. Please don't see the review if you have already decided to watch the movie. Getting into the movie, the first 10 min felt good hyping up but could have been a better display of astra being used rather than preaching what the astra does or what he is. This brought in mixed feelings for the action sequence. The development of the relationship between Ranbir and Alia could have been better. Things felt rushed and way too shallow. The understanding could have been made better and deep between them so that the impact of the climax is felt. The romantic scenes that build up the relationship were always abruptly interrupted by the main story. For me the real hype moment was with Nagarjuna rather than the ending which was a lot predictable like many other moments in the movie and again was preachy(please leave it to the audience to understand rather than explaining everything that is happening). The movie felt like more of Astraverse in a love story rather than love story in the Astraverse. The scene where they captured the good guys felt weird and less. Like why Alia was left untied? You can understand why Ranbir couldn't be captured or Ranbir could get free, but how come they gave all their astras to Ranbir and Alia to put in the car before villains entered? Like why? The moment they say you need a "turn on" to use an astra rather than invoking the deity indicates that they had no knowledge of how astras work and was a complete turn off. The good things about the movies were the display of a few astras, actors, action scenes and the background score. What I feel could have been done better are.. The background story of the astras felt a bit premature and lacked understanding of the Hindu culture which if done right could have done wonders with the storytelling of the movie. Justice was not done to every wielder of the astras. The owner of the astra of "light" could have done much more given his state (you will understand once you watch the movie). The love story and development of connection between Alia and Ranbir could have been made much deeper through a few scenes in the script to feel the impact of the climax. A few things can't be explained unless you see the movie but logic was missing on why Alia was seen in Ranbir's dream with a surprise attack rather than the obvious thing that he is connected to the fire astra and through that he could see her like he did in the rest of the movie. The connection with fire astra could have been revealed in the second part which would have made the movie much more hype leaving the identity of the main villain in question and this movie would have focused on why Ranbir is worthy of being the astra and many more things. Bollywood needs to understand the logic and concepts behind the Hindu culture and stop their stupid propaganda. Every time it felt like they wanted to show love above anything else. If so, why do you need part 2 when love already won the battle? What for? And what is love here? What did Ranbir love about Alia at first sight? Just physical beauty? If there is a much deeper connection with Alia which made him love as soon as he sees her, it could have been much better. Like a previous life connection which is an integral part of Hindu culture. If this movie has shown why Ranbir is worthy of being an Agni Astra rather than showing Alia as a turn on it would have done much better. By adding the turn on element they did not make the movie a drag but according to their own logic by which they explained the astras at the start, they are mocking the Rishis who did tapasya for the astras. The movie was predictable and lacked the element of surprise which is a key in making sequels. Again it felt more like an Astraverse in a love story rather than a love story in an Astraverse. Thanks

It's really disgusting and sad to see this mindset of trolling Hinduism.( No religion was even insulted in the movie) Because that's a new cool it seems and defaming your own roots is seen as progressive unfortunately. People trashing movie because it showed Hinduism is unnecessary and idiotic comment. Respecting other religions should be seen as progressive not altering history to force fit narratives (of any religion for that matter). We don't demand to force fit Hindus in Islamic literature then why here. These people will also complain that no person from other religion is shown even in a film on Ramayan. Sad to see how Hindus themselves have not read or understand the philosophies and essence of Hinduism themselves but find it cool to trash it just for the sake of it like spitting on your own roots just so to please the western minds and get acceptance from them. And there obsession to fit the social structures and laws of the west blindly on Indian society without even understanding the backgrounds to the problems which led to those social transformations in the respective countries. Its like it is a crime to make/get inspiration from these ancients stories from india on screen anymore in INDIA itself 🙄🤦🏻‍♂️ it's sad to see such mindset is considered secular nowadays.

Like you, Sucharita, I had been waiting for this movie for years! And while there is a lot to like about it, it wasn’t the cathartic experience I was hoping it’ll be. I am a sucker for a good love story in the context of other themes that threaten to be larger and fantastical. And I am all for the ‘Love is bigger than anything in its way’ narrative (e.g. Interatellar). But it felt a little forced here. We needed to live the love story and other character motivations more before buying into it. It is a grand and noble attempt nonetheless. And Ayan definitely deserves credit for his vision and venturing into making a film of this type and scale. I am definitely here for part 2 and 3. I just hope they turn the volume down to 50% and let the story and visuals take over. My favorite part of the movie came right after the Intermission leading up to and including the Deva Deva song sequence.
@ugosus
@ugosus Год назад
I hope the movie, despite its flaws, works since the theme appeals to a wide spectrum of audiences, esp kids and teens. The VFX itself is so epic that quite a few folks would like to watch the spectacle on big screen esp in 3D format. Perhaps the makers are smart enough to know that in a movie like this, the VFX will make up for what the narratives might lack. That’s the reason it vacillate between overwhelming and underwhelming as mentioned by Sucharita. I guess making a movie of this scale is always fraught with both overestimating and underestimating the audience expectations, which is why we probably will never watch a perfect movie.

Why are dance sequences required in a movie such as this? What purpose do they serve other than to frustrate and annoy the audience who have made time in their schedules to watch the movie? I’m all for music and dance being used as promotional material. Everyone has watched the dance numbers on tv already, listened to the songs on Spotify and whatnot, so unless they serve anything towards the plot, why include in final cut? Why can’t Indian cinema find a way to move away from this tradition of dance in movies? If you’re so enthusiastic about them, put them in post credit of even pre credit is fine. At least the audience has a choice to wait and watch or leave.

Perfectly summed up . Great review, @Sucharita. While the concept is novel and the visuals are top notch.. I increasingly feel that the script loses its depth as the scale heightens. Dialogues become juvenile and the impact then only relies on the scale and not the soul of the movie. I will still urge everyone to give this a chance. This might be one of the instances where an able director ( love Ayan mukherjee for having made wake up sid ) has dedicated his blood and sweat for something he believes in. :)

Just watched the movie. I really don't know apart from the amateur dialogues this movie has everything for an entertaining blockbuster. Infact, the plot and setup for the part 2 does feels like it's a work that took 10 years. I think, people nowadays go for a Bollywood movie with a predetermined mindset to find out flaws and highlight them and be part of the community that criticizes Bollywood. As, it has become a fashion these days and everyone wants to trend. But, the same audience goes for other movies with a completely blank mind expecting something new. This should change, every movie should be approached with a completely blank mind and you should just get dissolved in that world for 2 to 3 hours. Only then you'll enjoy a sci-fi movie. You can't go to such movie with a realistic world approach. I am absolutely sure that Brahamastra series is definitely going to be successful and will take Bollywood's standard in sci-fi genre much much high.

Yogi baba production was right all along. But back then the overwhelming support of audience trolled them in the comment section. Suddenly the same audience is boycotting them because he ate beef or something. I will never understand Indian audience. Also i noticed the marketing team were constantly invoking hindu pride to titilate the majority population. Support this film to support hindu culture - - something like that. But I think that has backfired. There's nothing wrong with representation in hindu mythology in cinema. We have had great works in hindu mythology on TV. Mahadev of lifeok and mahabharat of star plus were few of my favourites. But they had great storytelling and nuances. Without nuance its not representation. Its shallow cultural appropriation.

The love story was the weakest part of the film. Rushed, cringeworthy and disingenuous. They spent so long unravelling the love story yet it still felt unnecessary and rushed. Had they swapped the love story with more back story or character development it would be been far more successful. In fact I’d go as far as saying, take Alia Bhatt out of this film and it would have made no difference to the story.
