First time I've ever felt and understood this piece. Her soft singing is exquisite.

I can't think of a more powerful, loving expression of loss, hate, peace, trust, and restoration.

I've heard this sung by mezzos and they just don't suit the sonorities of this piece. The first two movements need to be dark, sung by a genuine alto, so that when the men's chorale arrives, the voice is borne just above their tone, as if they provide solace and support, rather than floating free at too high a register. This succeeds better than most. Love and appreciate the long silence after the last note.
@renzo6490

tony bennett ..YES ! When the music ends and the last note is sounded, the vibrations continue to emanate out and out and must be allowed to subside not only in the ear but also in the heart. There should always be a period of absolute silence lasting at least ten seconds after the final note of any musical piece. The thunderous tsunami of sound made by hands clapping at the final moment ( and sometimes before!) , totally erases the enchanted silence.
@tonybennett4159

Yes, but I'm ok with spontaneous applause after a rip roaring piece like the 1812 Overture, for example.
@renzo6490

tony bennett yes, I can see that.

Conductors nowadays cue their audiences by not lowering their hands until the silence is truly felt, and involved audiences respond, especially after works like this. The ending of Brahms's 2nd Symphony is another story.

this version of the Alt Rhapsody is by far the most beautiful, which I have heard so far and even surpasses the acclaimed performance of Kathleen Ferrier. both the orchestra, the male choir as conductor and a great Sarah Mignardo work together in a very sensitive way. The silence after the last note says everything about the appreciation of the audience. Impressive.

Ah! Hadn't noticed that. Thank you, for my admiration for Barbara Hannigan's work is as great as for this great performance: passion and restraint in passion, the visible and audible involvement of the orchestra members.

@ВалерийНикулин-р5щ

I found this recording while looking for the piece after reading about it in Kingsley Amis's "Everyday Drinking" Amis recommends it for hangover listening, and goes so far as to say that you can't claim to like music if you don't have a recording in your possession, preferably performed by by Kathleen Ferrier. I guess I'll look for that recording next, But it's a shame the old fellow didn't get a chance to hear this performance.
