Nick Ariondo's introduction to the Persian santour and virtuoso Freydoon Pouian inspired Nick to include this new, yet unorthodox arrangement for accordion and santour. Ariondo's arrangement of Brahms Hungarian Dance #5 highlights these two instruments in a homogenous blend of santour strings and accordion reeds, a lovely combination of musical expressiveness and exotic gypsy nuance......The santour originated in the Middle Orient (Persia/Assyria) and in the 12th century appeared in Western Europe. The santour, dulcimer and Hungarian cymbalom are similar-like stringed instruments having a flat soundboard (usually triangular in shape) with several strings stretched across and struck with 2 wooden hammers held in the player's hands. ......Freydoon Pouian, born in Iran, studied music and played professionally with popular singers on santour and accordion. Freydoon's brother Siamak is a celebrated hand-drum virtuoso and highly respected among musicians of varied backgrounds. Continuing his studies in the U.S., Freydoon received a Bachelors & Masters Degree in music at California State University, Los Angeles where he then met Nick Ariondo. Upon completion of his degrees and continuing concert activities, Freydoon founded the Pouian Conservatory of Music, an academy dedicated to teaching world music from folk to middle-eastern, classical to contemporary.....We hope you enjoy this refreshing-stylized performance from these two exceptional artists.
