"It's a wonderful gentle, rocking movement....like a cradle song, and we'll try not to wake the baby." So says 2014 Heifetz faculty chamber coach and pianist Yael Weiss in her introduction to the gorgeous second movement Andante of the otherwise-turbulent Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34, one of the great masterpieces from the pen of German composer Johannes Brahms. Though, as Yael notes in her introduction, it's a piece that Brahms "wrote three times before he got it right."
Up until today our 25-year calendar has mostly featured solo works, but chamber music has increasingly become one of the pillars of study at the Heifetz Institute. This gentle Andante, for example, may be at a relaxed tempo, but requires fierce concentration, and lots of rehearsal time, to pull off. Fortunately, this #Heifetz2014 cohort of students is more than equal to the task: Violinists Ji-Won Song and Yeri Roh, violist Tabea Haarmann-Thiemann, and cellist Daniel Tavani, in concert at Mary Baldwin University's Francis Auditorium.
