I just came to this after sitting through Karajan’s performance with the Berlin Phil-it’s like a plush limousine going nowhere in particular-and it does my heart and soul good to hear this wonderful performance, where you can hear everything that Brahms wrote, and every phrase has meaning. You might like Toscanini with the NBC orchestra too.

This is special. Every bit as definitive as the cd guides say. A definitive or at least ideal recording of this most problematic of Brahms' symphonies to make succeed.

Yet another historic Deucalion Project recording. Suggested by David Hurwitz, my first listening was total rapture. The recording engineer(s) was/were spot on; one can hear and experience every subtle nuance that the piece has to offer. The greatest rendition I have yet heard! Bravo!

No, no 'gang.' I am somewhat of a Brahms 3rd afficionado and, not having heard the Walter recording before Hurwitz' review, decided to explore it. What 'grabs' me is the fact that every instrument can be clearly heard and there is no muddying of even the most delicate of passages. Listen to it with over-the-ear headphones; simply put, a sublime recording!

One of Brahms finest and one of the finest pieces composed. More direct and visceral than JB other three symphonies. It's almost embarrassing to share initials with the great JB. -JB

There's something about Walter that never really grabs me. It's hard to put my finger on it but at some point I lose interest. Maybe it was a different thing when you heard him live.
