Women can spend up to 40% of their lives in menopause, and we know that they often experience changes in their mood, cognition, and overall brain health during this time. But these changes aren’t discussed openly or discussed with no helpful solutions, leaving women feeling hopeless, alone, or unsupported. Today’s guest is a brain researcher here to shed light on the changes during this time and what we can do to support women entering this phase.
Today, on the Dhru Purohit Show, Dhru sits down with Dr. Lisa Mosconi, the Women's Brain Initiative director and associate director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Clinic at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dhru and Dr. Mosconi discuss what happens to a woman’s brain when she goes through menopause and the connection to Alzheimer’s disease. They also discuss how research now validates women’s experience. Dr. Mosconi shares how to care for women’s brains during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, how to prevent dementia and the lifestyle habits that can help women navigate the transition into menopause.
Lisa Mosconi, PhD, is an associate professor of neuroscience in neurology and radiology at Weill Cornell Medicine and the director of the Women’s Brain Initiative and the Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic at Weill Cornell Medicine/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. She is the New York Times bestselling author of The XX Brain and Brain Food. Dr. Mosconi is passionately interested in how the risk of memory loss and dementia can be prevented through medical care, lifestyle modifications, and physical and intellectual fitness.
In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Mosconi dive into:
-What happens to the brain during menopause
-Research as validation for women’s experience
-Brain changes during the 3Ps in a woman’s life
-Life contentment during perimenopause and menopause
-Epigenetic’s role in menopause
-Lifestyle changes that are critical for optimal brain health
-Three types of exercise for menopause and what they activate
-What is menopause and when does perimenopause start
-Health in midlife as the greatest predictor of long-term health and longevity
-Lifestyle factors that cause the early onset of puberty
-Environmental toxins that Dr. Mosconi removed from her home
-Whole foods diet, fiber, and protein for optimal health
-The research behind Hormone Replacement Therapy
-Grandmother hypothesis: What is the purpose of menopause

Wonderful, intelligent and amazing discussion. Thank you Dr. Masconi for doing the research you do. No one told me about the 22 symptoms of menopause and I am a health care Provider. You and the Menopause Taylor ( Dr. Barbara Taylor) are ( in my opinion) the experts of Menopause.

My mom had a complete hysterecomy after having me at 40 . I am now 63. No menopause discussion. I'm upset b/c now at 63 that no doctors ever spoke on what you will go through when you go into menopause. I went into menopause after having a UFE in 2010. Doctors toss us aside once we stop having children. No doctor speaks on how important bio identical hormones when in menopause that can help your brain your breast and heart. Dealing with some femal issues now which will require me to make some decisions here in the near future. just my thoughts. Not suprised about the lack of funding for menopause studies. USA does not care anything about healing people in the united states. prefer us sick diseased and almost dead for the money.

Endogenous antioxidants are orders of magnitude more important than dietary antioxidants (as is popularly envisioned). Bio-copper and magnesium are KEY, and retinoic acid is required to unlock bio-copper. Morley Robbins explains. Get. Him. On. Your. Show. Your listeners deserve it.

My biggest issue still is SLEEP. How can I get better sleep?
@lindajcurry
@lindajcurry 5 месяцев назад
I had this issue as well for years! debilitating. I wish I had a silver bullet for you but for me, I had to move my diet from vegan to something easier for my body to deal with. I also added magnesium glycinate that I think really helps. I also use "soothing sleep" aid which has jujube fruit. I put castor oil on my thyroid and I'm not sure if it helps but I've had thyroid issues in past. Turmeric latte daily to manage inflammation. Have you tried any of these?

Ask your doctor for progesterone. It’s helped a lot of women with sleep issues.

I’m 55 and just had a full year of no periods. All the women in my family including my sister had hysterectomies in their 40s. I had no idea what to expect.

I'll be 41 this summer, the same age my mother was when she died of breast cancer in 1989. I have no idea if she experienced anything like early onset of menopause, and I wonder if it would even have been noticed alongside the sickness and issues she was experiencing after her cancer diagnosis. She was somewhat healthy in the sense that she ate a decent diet (and food probably wasn't as terrible back then as it is now) and was a PE teacher. But she definitely did drink and smoke during her college years, and was also on birth control then. I also have no idea what my grandmother, her mother, experienced either in regards to menopause. We really haven't had any kind of genetic models for perimenopause or menopause, so I'm just trying to learn as much as I can now. My sister is 3 years older than me and we're both fairly health-conscious (we kind of cycle naturally between low carb, keto, and ketovore and limit processed foods, we don't drink our sugar or calories, we both wear CGMs and closely track blood sugar and any changes, we've never smoked and drink maybe once a year on Christmas if we do at all, and we track our sleep and cycles). And I do strength training, sprinting, walking, yoga and practice regular grounding and meditation, and I track all of that also. Though 41 or 42 may not be the ideal age, I'm working on prepping my body for pregnancy. My goal is to break some of the disease cycles that have existed on both sides of our family over many generations in order to provide a better genetic model for my future children and their children. And because perimenopause and menopause aren't talked about enough, I plan to journal everything so that if I have daughters or nieces at any point they'll have a way to get detailed insight that might help them guide their own health decisions in the future.

Ina - I don't mean to tell you something you may already know, but regarding getting pregnant in your early 40's (and the bigger challenge at that age, STAYING pregnant and giving birth to a live, healthy child), well, the odds are really against women at that age. Somehow I missed learning that women's fertility falls off a cliff starting at the age of 35! I was married at 38, (and yes, it was my first and only marriage), and my husband and I started trying to get pregnant. Over the next 3 years, I got pregnant twice, and had two miscarriages, which is not uncommon at that age. At that point, my husband and I decided to go to a fertility clinic. The doctor was very blunt. Due to my age, I had only about a 15% likelihood of getting pregnant (and staying that way) using my own eggs. We discussed donor eggs, and we decided to go that direction. The next year, I gave birth to twin girls from donor eggs, and they are now in college! You may already be pregnant, and so this advice may be unnecessary. I hope all is well and you are achieving your goals. God bless.

@@goddessgirl5891 thank you for the concern, but I'm choosing to stay in a calm and positive mindset as we progress on this journey. Worrying about something that isn't a problem at this moment is only going to cause unnecessary stress that could make a pregnancy more difficult. I'm working with a trusted birthing team, getting all of the necessary blood work, and I'm in a good place in terms of my health. My birthing team has supported quite a few women my age and older who had successful pregnancies and births, with several having successful home births, so I know it's possible. Instead of worrying about what could go wrong I prefer to focus on the positive and things going well for me and future baby. So for now I'm just going to relax, enjoy the process, and let my body do her thing. ❤️
