@@theconductor2969 Also courage and determination...just like how sebas took a liking to climb...some of the NPC's are capable of recognising and acknowledging more than mere strength or power and they display more than just cruelty, contempt and indifference.
In the novel there's way more detail in Brain's mental state when facing Cocytus. It's said that everything in Brain's body was telling him to run away in terror because he knew he couldn't win but when Cocytus introduced himself and accepted his challenge he felt and overwhelming feeling of satisfaction in getting acknowledged by a being who he knew like Shaltear was far stronger than he was.
1. Shallter and Albedo guessed that "Riku" was likely a a level ~90 tank who focused on magic defense. Pandora's Actor however wasn't so sure due to the previous observations he made about the armor more than likely being a puppet. Ains really didn't know who to trust. Shalltear and Albedo excelled in physical combat, but the latter was the only one to even exchange a blow with "Riku". Whereas Pandora's Actor was the one who actually had an extensive encounter with him; and the mystery of why his HP lowered each time he used a spell was left a mystery for now. 2. Evileye had actually wanted to run off to ask Momon why he had sided with Ains and why he hasn't left E-Rantel in a while, knowing there had to be a good reason for it. But she couldn't because both Gagaran and Tia were both still weakened from their resurrection, so Blue Rose as a whole was weakened, meaning its strongest member couldn't just leave. 3. It really says a lot about how much of a *beast* Lakyus is , at least by New World standards, that even without her equipment it took her getting poisoned *twice* , mentally and phisically weakened by Evileye and beaten by Gagaran for a minute straight for her to finally break. They did this because, to put it plainly, they knew that Lakyus's refusal to leave would be her death and they took the opportunity to use the fact that Renner *always* serves tea whenever she meets with someone as their opening. They basically wanted to save her, whether she wanted it or not. 4. Brain's True Nail Clipper was an attack that had actually reached the coveted Level 40 which, by New Wolrd standards, was the realm of legendary heroes. Meaning that, in his final moments, he had *finally* surpassed Gazef and earned Cocytus's respect. Hence the latter preserving his body and walking *around* his corpse, so as to not disrespect his memory by walking through the small part of the city he gave his life to defend.
Just a bit of correction, it was 5 different poisons as what evileye said. Just from what I observed, she got poisoned by the tea, then stabbed 3 times. They tried resist weakening but still wasn't enough. They poisoned her for the 5th time before it worked.
@@alexandercarlson919 To be specific Wild Magic uses SOULS as fuel, this flaw is one of the areas it loses to the System Magic that w/e previous YGGDRASIL person introduced to the world, that is usable by all types of life forms & not solely Dragon Lords like w/ Wild Magic. But on the other hand, given enough Souls, Wild Magic can do almost anything vs the System Magic types which are not as customizable, but do have a self-recharging power supply i.e Mana
Cocytus : _"Foul Tarnished in search of _*_Ainz-sama_*_ . Emboldened by the flame of ambition... Someone must extinguish thy flame, let it be Cocytus The Commander."_ His First and last attempt, can't scratch it. However Brain little bit surpass Gazef, but his journey must Ended.
Brain is such a cool character with one of the best redemption arcs I have ever seen since his mental breakdown after his fight with Shalltear. It´s sad and yet beautifully written poetry that his life was both saved and destroyed by Ainz´s servants and he could not have gotten a more respectful death than the one Cocytus gave him.
Something that i loved about the scene with Brain's final showdown is that the book mentions he finally surpasses Gazef and breaks into the level of heroes upon his final attack. That and the level of respect Cocytus shows him in recovering his blade and detouring from the path Ains ordered him to follow is the moment when even men shed tears lol
If you're wondering what's up with the scene of Renner using the sword it's just to show something about her class levels, yes, the NWers have such a thing too, but they're not really aware of it and are slightly different from those in Yggdrassil.🤓 Her "Genius" class allows her to change the levels of said class for those of another class, so at that time she changes them to warrior levels.
Exactly. I don’t know why everyone’s reaction to this scene is patronizing Brain, and not acknowledging the absurdity of the feat he displayed here. Especially that scene where Cocytus finally gives Brain the long-awaited respect he deserves by walking around his corpse like a Real Samurai and acknowledges Brain as a True Warrior. I guess only people who read the Light Novel will truly understand the essence of Overlord. 😔
Cocytus walked around brain so he wouldnt cross the boundary he was setting due to respecting him as the warrior he tried to be, hence the little detour he made after icing him. Kinda cool Detail
I love the scene with Cocytus and Brain so much. Brain finally managed to surpass his limits AND his fear of the absurdly powerful monsters out there. Cocytus got to indulge in his honorable warrior background. Notice how he just doesn't walk past Brain but takes a deliberate detour to honor the man that laid down his life to bar him from walking up to the palace. it's a small gesture but so powerful and deserved.
One thing, that amuses me often, is the fact, that some viewers of the Anime first think, that Ainz is the Hero of that series. But when the massacre on the Katze Plain happens, they realize, that he is the Antagonist in his own series and is clearly a evil being and switch off^^
A villain is the hero of their own story. I'm honestly curious to see how this story ends...even if that means I'm 'rooting' for the bad guys. It really takes some very bad writing to make me give up a series. Looking right at you, Shield Hero and RWBY.
The fun part about that short fight is that brain is sth between lv28-31 but the technique he made up himself "true nail clipper" has a lvl sth around lvl 40 thats means that the surpassed himself and gazef by like 10 lvl with this atk, which is a rly rly huge step from brain. i mean evil eye is not human anymore and sth around lvl 50 which mean brains atk was one if not the strongest atk ever created by a human
left out from the novel, then Aura's monsters were on the wall, when that t-rex howled, (and maybe killed all those guards), her other pets actually attacked him instead of just barking at him. She then had to call them off attacking him.
As others have stated, he walked around Brains corpse out of respect for a warrior dying to defend the land he stood upon and thus leaving it defended as it never fell under Cocytus' feet
Aight time for context-kun "I'll attack that first" - the street looked generic and a bit was cut out from the scene so a lot of people didn't get why the fuck Brain kamikazed but those were the streets were Brain, Gazef, Climb and Sebas used to hang out in. Brain has lost everyone but Climb at this point and Cocytus was sullying his most treasured memories. When he cut off Shalltear's pinky nail, it was a Four Fold Slash of Light combined with Field, focusing all the slashes in one point, even then, Brain was the only one able to achieve that instead of having the slashes spread out like a claw. The True Nail Clipper is a Six Fold. In Chess there is something called performance ELO, your rating based on how well you played in one game/tournament separate from your actual rating. I think Gazef was level 30 but that single attack was in the high 40s and would have decimated any human that stepped on that Field. He's the only being in their world that damaged a godlike being with purely his own strength, no magic, no magic equipment, no hand-me-down world items or mech pay-to-win shit. Just a dude who's worn the same clothes since S1 and not too much of a spoiler but no martial arts will ever come close to that level of mastery for the rest of the light novel. Cocytus, with his sense of honor knew Brain gave his all guarding that street so he walked around it despite making the rest of the Kingdom his fashion runway.
Brain owns several magic items (he told Gazef he could sell them instead of taking the money he offered), he buffed with several potions, and also used martial arts - a "warriors magic"
@@-Apoptos-S2 E8 Gazef: "Do you have money" Brajn: "No but I can sell an item if I need to-" He never mentioned any magic items and his katana is as basic as it gets. I do have to make a correction since there were two mentioned in the LN, but never used. His necklace which grants blindness resistance and night vision upon vocal activation, and his ring which can bind a low tier spell and release upon activation. Potions are garbage in the New World and aren't considered magic in any MMORPGs If New World's Martial Arts is magic then my table is a lawnmower.
@@thenarrator1921 “Even so, I have to listen. I guess it ought to be better if we drank while we talked to lighten the mood… Treat this place as your home until I get back. Ask the household help if you want to eat anything, they ought to be able to throw something together for you. And if you want to head out… you’ve got money, right?” “…No. But… If I need anything, I can sell my magic items.” Brain showed Gazef the rings he was wearing. “Is that really okay? They’re not cheap, right?” “It’s fine. I don’t care.” Volume 5, page 150 "Rings," so he either has more magic items than just the two mentioned, or its translated incorrectly. - "Ainz knew the secret behind Clementine’s flashy moves. “-Martial arts, huh!?” These were techniques which did not exist in YGGDRASIL. They could be said to be a warrior’s magic - and they were things of which he had to be wary." Volume 2 page 216 This is how Ainz saw, and interpreted martial arts - "The first magic potion he had drunk contained had the effect of a「Lesser Strength」spell, followed by one which bestowed「Lesser Dexterity」 upon him." Volume 2, page 58 These arent just insignificant buffs, they arent even mentioned as a downgrade of spells straight from a caster. They are perfectly fine buffs to support Brain, who lacks caster support. In volume 14, page 327, it outright states, "The magical buffs granted to Brain by his potions meant that he was much stronger than he was when he faced Shalltear."
The name “Cocytus” is referenced in Greek mythology and the Divine Comedy, but in slightly different contexts. In Greek mythology, it is the River of Lamentation in the underworld. Wailing can be heard along its length. In the Divine Comedy, specifically The Inferno, it is a frozen lake that is the Ninth and Final Circle of Hell. Frozen in it depths are traitors and those who defraud. At its very center is Lucifer, himself. With the lake frozen up to his waist. Warrior Takemikazuchi inadvertently incorporated both meanings into his Guardian. The ice connection is obvious. But his evil nature belies the fact he is a source of suffering and lament.
cocytus is like a knight mixed with samurai the fact that brain a weak human can stand up to him and challenge him to a duel is honerable in his eyes and as such he keeps his sword and preserves his body to take back to his floor at the tomb in order to honour him
Alredy commented but, fittingly enough, the sword Cocytus used was the same one he used against the Lizardmen and is a weapon gifted to him by his creator, Takemikazuchi, before he left the game, I believe. So him using that sword signifies that, even though he's still putting in minimal effort, he IS acknowledging his opponent as being worthy of respect.
Maybe kinda messed up, but I'm happy for Brain that he got to fight Cocytus as his last opponent. If it had been almost anyone else in Nazarick, Brain probably would've gotten killed before ever getting to try his final technique and he wouldve been left splattered in the street like just another victim. But, because it was Cocytus he got to die a warriors death
It’s an end both beautiful and tragic but I’d wager that for brain dying a true warriors death and actually receiving such high respect from a being of such overwhelming strength is the way he wanted to go out.
I don't see Cocytus Vs Brain as some one sided fight but instead a perfect example of a historically accurate samurai duel. In real historical samurai duels, they weren't long with back and forth exchanges but quick with the winner being decided with whoever lands the first strike. Truly a perfect ending to the character Brain Unglaus
Yeah bro, a samurai vs an ice insect with impenetrable armor with the ability to destroy armies on its own. Samurais only used their katanas in desperate situations (Because in real combat they are useless), in real hand-to-hand combat they used spears
@xxxhalo4everxxx No it's not said that Brain landed any strike but that Cocytus's attack stopped Brain right before it could touch him. So Cocytus landed the first slice and ended the duel as I said
It should also be stated that the whole “samurai duel ending in the first strike” part so many are getting hung up on isn’t an absolute as there were a of these duels to the death where the first strike landed wasn’t enough to kill or disarm the opponent resulting in said opponent being the one to land the fatal strike
@raymurray3401 I'm not saying all samurai duels were like that lol what I'm saying is a lot of historically accurate samurai duels took place in that fashion. Especially looking at Cocytus, who, when taking out his God slaying emperor blade took a stance leaving himself open for an attack but also setting himself up to land a strike at any moment while awaiting Brain to draw his blade. Cocytus Vs Brain was a realistic samurai duel in everyday
When cocytus say "to think there is a man with tgis capability" He is not lying, that stuff you guys joke about level 32, after taking that potion and cast ability boost Brain level reach 40, 30 is level for hero , so he is outliner aka beyond hero
And yes, Wild Magic used to be the only magic in the New World until Players arrived and brought Tier Magic with them. Wild magic works differently and uses HP to cast but higher Wild Magic effects can only be countered by World Items.
Tomato - Tamato. you say? Unfortunately, you are way off. Let's make it real clear, Brain did NOT reach lvl 40. The only reason his attack reached such a level was because of the selfharming buffs(Ability/Greater Ability Boost) he casted and the pots he drank. Temporarely elevating something to a higher level does not equal you being that level. Same applies to Climb who used Ability boost against Succulent. Once the buff runs out he still gonna drop back down to the weak ass waste of practice he was before. So yes. Claiming that Brain reached 10 levels above the entrypoint of "the realm of heroes" as they call it, is straight up comical.
2:05 when you've read the LN and know that this moment isn't properly explained in the anime, but the explanation would be a spoiler for the next episode.
Poured one out for another good one gone. Sebas is easily my favorite character in the whole roster, with Brain, Cocyutus, Gazef, and Zanac coming in close behind.
NO, SHE IS NOT that one scene Princess Renner we see she given them food. it contains POSION WHY YOU WILL SEE NEXT EPISODE. also Cocytus leaving the spot where Brain is show of Respect as a Warrior
Ainz observation of no players being revived, isn't cause he is undead, since other previous players weren't all undead either, just a general observation since nothing suggested the past players were still active after their reported deaths, so it seems only natural denizens of the world, and his NPCs cause revive, but nothing supporting that he can too
9 months late to say this but I hope you read somebody else explanation about the food renner prepare for the orphanage. That is extremeley important for you to understand renner.
Ygdrassil, as a game, has ressurection magic. Meaning that players with support classes can ressurect other players. Judging by the game mechanics - there must be a way to enchant gear (staffs for example) with ressurection magic charges. Capable of ressing players even during the combat. Why Ainz so afraid of dying in this game if his guild surely must have such equipment and high enough lvl NPC's to use it. I get that Shalltear is an NPC and they must be ressurected by game mechanic. But Ainz is a player.
Ainz - Momonga - is also an extremely cautious player. He doesn't like taking risks unless the reward far exceeds any possible downsides. He also dislikes acting without all of the possible information available. When coming to the New World, Ainz had noted several major changes that include the NPCs gaining sentience and new magics being available. Not everything is the same as Ygdrassil. Ainz was terrified that his fight with Shalltear would permanently kill her and was incredibly relieved that the guild NPC res mechanic works. Even with that knowledge he's still worried that it will only work with Ygdrassil gold, a finite resource in this New World. Without actually testing res magic on another player, it makes sense that, with Ainz's personality, he would be reluctant to put himself in any true danger.
You underestimate Ainz's paranoia. Unless he knows it's 100% safe he will not take that risk as long as that risk isn't worth it. The fact that all of the other beings that he thinks must have been players(i.e. Slane's Six Gods, Eight Greed Kings etc) are all now gone, further reinforces the idea that Player's might not be capable of resurrection in the new world. Otherwise why would they have died without getting resurrected in the first place? If they are not dead, then where are they now? It makes Ainz doubt the possibility of player resurrection because of all those factors. So until he gets any info that says otherwise, he will act as if he only has 1 life just to make sure. If he actually finds another player and that player was hostile against him, he will definitely experiment with that player to see if a player can be resurrected.
@@SpiritoftheWolf28232 so every single spell worked the way it was intendend in Yggdrasil. Every single mechanic still works the same way. Every item works the same way. So why ressurection magic wouldnt work the same way? It's the most basic spell, that every support has. With higher level of ressurection being able to mass ress, combat ress, or ress without penalties. It is clear, that Ainz wouldnt ressurect via ingame mechanic of just respawning. But ressurection magic 100% should work. His concerns about having level reduced, without knowing how to regain xp and how much of it will be needed (if he loses 2 lvls upon ressurection and to gain them back he need 2billion xp, and being among low-lvl creatures he barely earns 1xp for killing them) also shouldnt be a problem. As ressurection magic should not reduce your level, only respawning does. The only valid concern he may have - is that upon dying, his soul will return to his real body in his real world. Removing him from Nazarick. But once again, it is unkown how time goes between worlds and what would happen if ressurection magic is casted upon Ainz. Will his soul return instantly. Or will he live his life in real world and upon dying - his soul would return to Ainz body to the moment when ressurection spell was casted
@@ubeia4857 Judging by how people react to those Gods and Kings. It's safe to assume - they were humans or humanoid races. Which by nature have limited lifespan. So they may just die of old age and no ressurection magic will fix that, as their bodies no longer can handle ressurection. And for ressurection - you need to have someone of same level and skill to ressurect you. If you died alone - there is noone to ress you and you indeed went deed
@@romanpyatibratov4361 The several instances of Resurrection performed in both the light novels and the anime have indeed caused loss of levels/experience. That is absolutely one of Ainz's worries. Now this may be because the levels of the spells were 4th tier or lower, but until we have concrete proof that Super, God, or World Tier resurrection spells won't reduce level/exp we have to assume they will. Furthermore, there are the legends of the Gods, Thirteen Heroes, and Eight Greed Kings that point to the fact that Players have been in the New World before Ainz. This is supported by the fact that the Platinum Dragon Lord refers to Ainz (Pandora's Actor) and Albedo by the terms "Player" and "NPC". If there were players previously and Resurrection magics were available, why aren't those players still around? Why have they fallen into myth and legend? Why are only demi-gods present? Ainz has plenty of reason to be skeptical of whether or not Resurrection magics will work on him, and his paranoia prevents him from risking his life unless he deems it absolutely necessary, like when he fought Shalltear.
