Braised red cabbage is sweet, sour, tender and buttery. It's an easy healthy side dish to serve alongside side roasted chicken or fish. I first tasted braised red cabbage at Houston's restaurant and have been making it at home ever since.
The combination of cabbage, onions and apples along with the sour vinegar and sweet honey, will have you and your family wanting to add this recipe into your weekly menu.
Braised red cabbage is also great for St. Patricks Day or to add to your weekend meal prep.

BRAISED RED CABBAGE RECIPE
1 tablespoon pastured butter
1 small onion, thinly sliced
2 green apples, chopped
2 cloves of garlic
1 small head of red cabbage (about 2 pounds)
¼ cup balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons honey
¼ cup goat cheese
Salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS:
Melt butter in a cast iron skillet, large sauté pan, or dutch oven over medium high heat.
Add onions along with a pinch of salt and saute for 6-8 minutes, or until the onions are translucent.
Add apples and garlic to the pan. Season with a little more salt and pepper, stir and cook for 2 minutes.
Next, add in the red cabbage, balsamic vinegar, honey and a splash of water. Season again with salt and pepper, and gently stir everything together.
Allow the cabbage to slowly simmer on the stove top for 30 minutes, stirring every so often. If the pan seems dry, add more water as needed (the water will evaporate as the cabbage cooks).
Once the cabbage is tender and buttery, transfer to a serving dish and top with dollops of goat cheese and fresh chopped parsley. Enjoy!
If you want to keep this recipe vegan, replace the butter for coconut oil, sprinkle in some sugar in place of the honey, and skip the goat cheese.

This is one of my favourite dishes ever..lol! I used green cabbage since that is what I have. I also used 1 tbsp maple syrup instead of honey and 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar. Thank you so much! I plan to make this over and over again. Permanent staple!

I came up with an easy red cabbage dish. You have so inspired me to spread my wings in cooking. I need red cabbage in my diet. I saute the cabbage with a bit of red onion. Apples and raisins. It lasts quiet a while in the fridge and as you say gets better the longer it sits. Yum.

Just made this today because I have all the ingredients at hand, so why not? The goat cheese is the cream on top! This dish is so warm and tender with the perfect sweet and sourness. Perfect to pair with some lemon tea! I love the interaction between you and your husband by the way. You guys are really cute together and it makes me happy.

Hi all, My Mom Mad this when we were young. She's 80 and refutes this now. Lol. She was the best cook ever! I would like to preserve this braised cabbage dish. I know I need sterilized bottles. Will the Balsamic Vinegar be enough to give this at least a 6-month self-life, or does it have to be stored in the refrigerator? Thanks in advance.

Cooking it right now, has anyone tried it with feta cheese (forgot to buy goat cheese), smells VERY strong with the b. vinegar. I'm Mexican but hubby spent years in Germany in the Army-making it for him, thanks Dani | love your channel!!!

I'm not sure I wold like this with feta just because feta tends to be very tangy and bright and the cabbage is also very tangy and bright. The goat cheese tends to soften it and round it out a bit BUT also note, that it's delicious with out the cheese as well.

I love cabbage with onions! They are great complimentary flavours. Ive never had it with apples, and i don't usually like fruit in most savoury food so I might not like it, but I definitely want to try it at least once.

Beautiful stewed down with onions , red of course lol. Some Red wine vinegar and Port. Then add finely chopped apple and/or pears. For a bit of texture just perfection!

I'm German descent and my mom made red cabbage all the time when I was growing up, but she made it differently than you and it seems like your recipe is a little bit easier!!! You read minds, too?! Been wanting a recipe for cooked red (purple😉) cabbage. Will certainly try this one. And, the goat cheese...brilliant! Wonder if topping with some...pepitas or pine nuts (or....?) would be a good add. Couldn't hurt😊.

I make a similar recipe without vinegar or honey or feta. Cabbage (red or green), onions, apples if I have them, sometimes potatoes, sausage if I have it. YUM!

It is a German recipe. Well what you are cooking is more American adapted. By the way Germans use bay leaves. So you wouldn’t eat on St. Patrick’s Day. 😂😂
