***WARNING***SPRING BRAKE CHAMBERS CONTAIN A LOADED COMPRESSION SPRING. PROPERTY DAMAGE, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH MAY OCCUR IF MANUFACTURER INSTRUCTIONS ARE NOT FOLLOWED COMPLETELY.
NEVER attempt to remove a spring chamber crimped band.
Follow all industry safe maintenance practices!
In this video, I remove and replace a 30/30 Brake Chamber from an intermodal container chassis manufactured by Strick. I also disable the loaded compression spring using a specialized protective housing as to render this chamber harmless for disposal. Only qualified persons using such housing should perform this procedure.
**WARNING****DIESEL MAINTENANCE CAN BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS This video is in NO WAY meant to replace proper instruction and/or training. This work was performed by a competent professional and was simply designed to provide a basic understanding of how a typical diesel shop operates.
Persons interested in the occupational field of Diesel Technician or Mechanic, are encouraged to enroll in the proper classes for certified instruction and training. Working in the field of diesel maintenance can be a challenging yet rewarding experience. I hope these videos give you better insight as to possible career opportunities.

Wow, 20+ years in fleet service and I've never seen a brake chamber cage. Awesome.

This is a very old video and I'm seeing it for the 1st time but thank you so much. You made changing a chamber so easy and very great advice! ❤❤❤❤

You made a very good point about not just matching the old rod due to cut.....like most people do. Also when you get a bent pushrod that lazy copy the guy before method wont work. I usually mark a line and port with a marker so i dont mix the lines up

Very nice explanation and procedure! I noticed the bushing on the S-cam was worn, you can see that when you applied and released the brakes (around 4:20), S-cam shaft moving out of position.

Most mechanics dont bother to check the whole system,they fix whats obvious and move on.they don’t care

So You plug air in Remove the slack adjuster Plug air out Remove the 2 air lines And then remove mounting bolts

One of the best explained videos on how to mark and cut a brake chamber. Definitely like and subscribed. Thanks for making good content

I just did one of these today. I caged the brake chamber, then measured the length of the rod on the old one. I then cut it on the new one since it was already caged.

U were taking it apart or something for it to explode? Bec I’ve changed a hell of a lot brake cans and the only one that came apart and bit me was the one that my dumb a** was trying to take apart bec I cut the rod to short. So I figured that I would swap the old rod out of the old brake can and put it into the new one since I was an idiot and cut it to short. Needless to say it came apart and hit me in the gut and knocked my wind out lol. I was really young whenever that had happened, my first brake can swap and I learned a valuable lesson that day… I still can’t believe that I was that dumb lol

@@RV83313 diaphragm was leaking and it was rusted to hell so we decided to replace the whole thing and the old guy I work with always likes to take them off off and put air to it with a pipe fitting to extend the push rod out and right when it got pushed all the way out it blew apart and blew a hole in the ceiling 20 foot above us, my face was about 10 inches away from it and I felt the air from it go by my face

@@vicpetrishak7705 been doing that for years...8 years it seems. Only did the whole chamber if it was necessary, otherwise I only did piggybacks.
@vicpetrishak7705
@vicpetrishak7705 Год назад
@@importsstillsuck I was referring to the spring brake chamber itself . Caging the old style to replace the diaphragm in the spring side is not safe to do. All the late style chambers roll form instead of a clamp. There are still some of the old style in use .
@importsstillsuck
@importsstillsuck Год назад
@@vicpetrishak7705 I'm referring to the piggy back not the diaphragm and whenever we came across a sealed type brake chamber that was broken, we'd replace it with the serviceable type with the clamp.

Cool video :D Replace a Brake Camber is not that hard :D You can do it in an easier way. Take the old Camber, measure the length, lets say it was 24,8 cm. Then you mark 24,8 at the new one, cut whit tha grinder, mount the new one and attach it to the rest. Then you have more space to cut instead of do it under the trailer or were you are replacing ti from ;)
@DieselMechTech
@DieselMechTech 10 лет назад
Just as a rule, I never trust the length of the previous rod as the measurement of the new rod. I've had to replace a newly installed brake chamber which was improperly cut on a road repair. The new chamber rod had been cut too short and did not function properly.

How did you get the clevis off?
@RV83313

Usually have to get a torch and heat it up to be able to unscrew it off, bec they’re usually frozen. I put a little bit of anti seize on the threads whenever I put them back together
