I don't like to say how long it is since I worked on a mini. Suffice to say I owned a 63 mini pick up. always having to do something with it to keep it going, student days no funds for repairs.So make do and mend, second hand parts at best.Poor thing used to get badly overloaded with fellow students on pub runs, which was hell on the remolds.Still remember that little car with great fondness, wish I still had it, great little work horse. Watching you work on yours, a nice chilled stroll down memory lane.

An interesting comment on the pads Paul. They look as if they have virtually no wear so I personally wouldn’t be changing them, but otherwise, every time. The very first light press of the brakes will clean the pads. We used to use white spirits to clean the discs. I would have changed the slotted retaining stud though. Great stuff as usual. It’s stunning the amount of times the split pin is too narrow or incorrectly fitted as well as how few people use a torque wrench. That’s why so many bolts and nuts are overtightened. You know what they say, tighten it until it slips and back it off a quarter. (Joking). Love the Aaltonen roof rack. Still remember the rallies.

I would have loved to replace the Screws my self but unfortunately the only thing available in 1/8 UNF on the shores of Ireland is a slot head screw so they will have to wait for the next time around when I can order some cross head in to keep it all OE

I'm having terrible problems with brake judder in my mini. Been through 4 sets of discs and pads in no time. I've changed my calipers, flexi hoses, wheel bearings. I'm just wondering if the discs I'm buying from the usual mini suppliers are poor quality. Just seen brembo make them so might give them a go. Any other suggestions what might be causing my issue? I don't drive like a nutter by the way!

Nice work. Any recommendations on whether cross-drilled and/or grooved discs are of benefit on Mini for road use? I'm having trouble with my rear drum brakes. The handbrake cable is at max tension on the adjuster nut. Yet brakes do not hold the car on hills, no matter how hard I pull the lever up. I have adjusted the shoe adjuster nuts on the drums as described in the workshop manual, and fit new brake shoes, new cylinders. Cables look very fresh (no visible rust). Could they have stretched that much (adjuster stud thread is what, 1.5-2"??). I have new shoe adjuster nuts, and handbrake cable levers still to fit. Anything else I should be looking at? Is there a wear limit on the drum surfaces (can't find it in the workshop book)?
@HREIRL
@HREIRL 3 года назад
Regarding cross drilling and grooving disks would all depend on the pad being used. If the pads do not have a high Metallic content than Cross drilling makes perfect sense as it will allow surface gas pressure to release and allow the pad to perform better. Grooving help to keep the surface of the pad clear and again can help with De-Gassing so it is a benefit but in a-lot of cases modern pads have compounds added to combat this problem anyway so its much of a muchness. Regarding the rear brakes I know this might be telling you how to suck eggs but are you sure you have the shoes in the right way around as in there is a top and bottom and a leading and trailing. If its not that as you say it could be drums are past there best if they have "Belled" they can cause a problem where only a very small surface of the shoe Presses the drum
@TornadoCAN99
@TornadoCAN99 3 года назад
@@HREIRL THx. Yes the drum shoes are correctly oriented and assembled. I've followed the very good rear brake video from Steveston Motor Co. I have new forward cable to try...looking at the threaded stud end, it appears somewhat different to the one now on the car...mainly at the swaged area so likely just difference in manufacture selection. Haynes says you need two people to replace that cable, someone has to hold the pass-through nuts under the car to undo/do-up the bolts from above. Any single-handed tricks or tips?

32:20 your going to get such a hammering for not replacing the pads. Personally, at least take the pad out and give them a rub on a sandpapered flat surface. New pads are cheap. Every time I replace discs, it's pads to. So why not replace thw pads Paul?
@HREIRL
@HREIRL 3 года назад
Well during the video I mentioned this car is running nearly new Green stuff performance pads. Sand Papering pads is unfortunately a wasted effort as the pads them selves are designed to self surface by the fact they have metallic particles built into the compound. We are very much keen on both environmental protection and also advising the customer on the best way to spend there money. Replacing perfectly serviceable pads is waist-full of a product that cannot be recycled and costly. The old disks will be going to a local steel recycling company for certified recycling. So let them hammer away Paul I am more than confident I made the right call 👍

@@HREIRL Nearly new pads, missed that bit, was watching on my phone at the time and in the garden by a main road. When you say nearly new, what mileage was covered?These new pads though which wouldn't have changed, would, if more than a test drive, have started bedding in. Even brand new pads and discs have to bed in as the surface of the disc is full of machining lines and the pads aren't smooth. (Aston Martin even bed their brakes in on a bench before fitting to the car) I would have have quickly run them across some sandpaper as a matter of course, only takes 5 mins. Maybe things have changed since i done my mechanics classes in the mid 80's lol. Pads have though, they used to be Asbestos back then. P.s. I've buried lots of discs in my back garden lol, only joking ;-)

Is Loctite all that useful for competition cars? You mentioned it releases around 250-350 degrees, and I wonder just how hot those brakes will get in a competition setting - or even a spirited drive on the road? I know we don't actually need the brakes all that much on a Mini if there's nothing on the road ahead, but still...there's plenty of opportunity for getting the discs glowing if you're in the right frame of mind. :-) PS: A teacher, hmm? That explains why you're so comfortable talking to an audience (even if, in this case, it's an imaginary audience until the video uploads.) No wonder you've got that knack for keeping it interesting as well as informative. Cheers, mate. :-)

Ha, ya we don't use Locktite on the racers for two reasons we use a special locking washer from Nord-lock and as you say the heat going through the hubs would be so high. Im surprised no one picked up that I was using bearing fit instead of thread locker also. there is a reason. The bearing fit has a much higher yield temperature than thread locker which is why I use it on brakes :) a tip given to by by an aircraft engineer 👍👍

Very interesting! I juste have changed the discs on my Mini, but there is wobble on one side. I plan to change the tapered washers, maybe the flanges too. Would you go for EN24T washers and flanges for road use?
