Brake & safety system errors on a Hyundai Ioniq Electric 28kWh at 95,000 miles

Our own Hyundai Ioniq Electric 28kWh is now over 5 years old and has done 95,000 miles and has got its first faults. Intermittently, the ABS, traction control, autonomous emergency braking error lights come on and also the regenerative braking is disabled. After looking at the error codes, it shows one of the rear wheel sensors has failed. So in this video I show how this was fixed.

Thanks, this was very helpful. I have exactly the same error (2018 Ioniq electric). It happened from time to time, but now it's happening every single time I drive the car (it disables regenerative breaking which is bothersome). The other thing that I experienced, is sometimes when I turn on the car, the speedometer will jump a bit between the 0 and 10 Kmph mark. I do get the BSD error (blind spot detection), but it makes sense that it's probably a speed sensor causing this. This will help when I take it to the dealer so they don't try to rip me off. Thanks for the video!

Yes, sounds like its most likely a wheel sensor at fault. You may want to watch this video too ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PhM4rZc3IG4.htmlsi=BCVF-C3VSh2ewsZF

No. I would have liked to film it, but I didn't have the time on that day. Its just a case of removing the brake caliper (both sections), the brake disk, handbrake motor and then unbolting the wheel hub assembly. It took about 1 hour.

Very interesting and one for the memory banks, good to know, thanks Matt. I've got a Pearlecent Blue 38kW Ioniq, 2020 coming next week. Found it on Carwow in the end, would you believe? Nerve wracking experience buying online but needs must. Fingers crossed I'm dealing with a decent company. Reviews are mixed but lots of happy repeat customers so I'm hoping all is well for us. 👍😅

@@GoGreenAutos all thanks to you most of all Matt. I'm only sorry to have been in too much of a rush to have had you find me one. This is just some temporary fun for me while I can still get in and out of it! Going to need something like the MGZS in two or three years. I fell for the '22 Trophy version, maybe the so called short range with the LFP battery would be good for us. I'll get you to keep an eye out for me come '24 when finances should allow. 🤞👍

Last week I had a different fault with my 3 year old ioniq. 20km from home on the motorway exit it gave an electric system error, and it wouldn't move. According to the dealer the on board charger had developed a coolant leak, and was flooded.

Hi, I've experiensed the same error message when running too long on the 12V battery and obviously discharging it maybe too low, but never measured the voltage. Now I have the same problems permanently again, due to mice in the care they have chewed up stuff in the boot and made it into the roof all the way to the front at the interior lighting, where they built a nest. I'm pretty sure they also chewed through some wires, causing this bloody problem. Drives me nuts!

Hi, Do you know on what part under the car I can put my jackto jacking up my ioniq 28 electric and put it on 4 jack stands placed on the 4 sides of the car, can I place the jack in the middle on the subfram to jacking up the front move the jack on the rear U metal bar for jacking up the rear ?
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos 2 года назад
Jacking and supporting an EV is no different to any other vehicle, but you must not jack or support the vehicle on the battery pack. I don't have the Ioniq here at the moment, so can't confirm the specifics on that car, but its fine to support it on any structural/suspension metalwork that looks strong enough. Don't use plastic covered metalwork though.

I would have hoped you would have removed the sensor cap with a dremel or hacksaw. The technology can't be anything more complicated than a Hall-effect or induction coil, and it would have been handy to find out while you had the opportunity, plus perhaps discover how it failed.

I had an odd error the other day - while driving along my cruise control went and it pinged up a few other errors. Parked up after a couple of miles for 20 minutes or so and when I went back to the car it was fine. Had a thought and stuck in one of those accessory socket battery things that shows the state of your 12v battery and with the car running it was at just 13v but the errors didn't come back on the dash. Charged the car as usual back at home and when that was done the 12v was showing 14.7 with the car switched on. I suspect the errors may have come from the 12v battery being low? 🤔
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos 2 года назад
For a low 12V battery to start causing problems, I'd suggest it needs to be below about 10.5V. 13V is not low. Normal operating voltage is around 12.4. The 14.7v is the voltage from the DC-DC converter which is charging the battery when the vehicle is in ready mode. In your case, to get an error when driving, I suspect it was a wheel sensor that caused it. Maybe from slipping on a manhole cover or maybe just an interrupted signal. A failing wheel sensor can be intermittent for months before it becomes a bigger issue.
@FFVoyager
@FFVoyager Год назад
@@GoGreenAutos you could well be right - I've not seen the error for weeks although I did replace the 12v battery (only £50 for a Varta replacing a Hyundai - possibly the original) but yesterday the errors came back. This time I was prepared for it. Found a place to pull over and scanned for errors with Car Scanner Pro on my phone. Had a bunch of errors come back, one of which is 'C1652(08) Raw code: 565208 ECU: ABS control unit Status: Test failed, Test failed (current drive cycle), Confirmed, Warning indicator requested'. Others were for the airbag (no warning light for that though!) and electronic parking brake (warning light) and blind spot detection (but lane departure warning was working with the error messages). On restarting the warning lights were off so drove on. They came back again. This time I scanned for errors and reset them while moving, lights go off and normal service resumes! I think to get detailed information it will have to go on a proper code reader - but suspect I'm looking at something similar. If it is, the first 'warning' I had that something might be up was last year when parking the car the EPB didn't apply when the car was switched off - I know because my drive is on a slight slope and I don't want to habitually rest the car on the parking brake pin - but it wasn't a common problem. It has reoccurred a few times before the first Christmas lights moment a month or so ago too. And several times since. I wonder if anyone else has noticed that?

I had this error, and got the sensor and hub changed 2 weeks ago - but now the error has come back! Is there a sensor in both wheels, or do you have any idea what could destroy the sensor after such a short time?
@GoGreenAutos

There is an ABS sensor in each wheel hub. You need to read the error codes first to find out which wheel sensor is faulty.

Great video Matt, have you got a photo of the numbers on that sensor, there is a sensor only on eBay item 314042217392 and that is said to be suitable for Hyundai KONA, KIA E-Niro etc you would have thought the part would be the same as the Hyundai Ioniq? may be worth comparing? perhaps you could see if you can get the old sensor off the hub, for future reference?
