In this video, ASTA mechanical volunteer Bennie Kirk gives us an update on the power car, talking about the plenum frame, the brake wheel, finishing the doors, and future plans.
The Power Car was originally a Santa Fe baggage car, manufactured by the Budd Company in 1953. We purchased this car from Amtrak, and since then have been doing a thorough restoration on the car to install a generator within the car so it will work with head-end power (HEP). This will power our passenger cars on our weekend excursions.

I’m glad y’all are regularly updating us with content, can you do an update on 786/442?

We're working on doing video updates for the both the 442 and 786, but unfortunately our time is limited. But here is some work that has been going on as of late. On the 442, the rear truck is getting close to being finished and getting reinstalled beneath the engine. Also, our volunteers have been doing a thorough cleaning of the inside of the locomotive, repainting the interior, and cleaning up rust damage. The battery boxes are being rebuilt, too. With both the 442, the Power Car, and general maintenance on our passenger fleet, work on 786 has been slower, but we've managed to accomplish a fair bit. The frame and wheels have both been repainted and we are prepping the rigging and machining the rear piston heads and cross heads in order to measure the piston thrust. This will allow us to make critical measurements regarding the shoes and wedges.
