Wear HEADPHONES! Today I can bring you a musical comparison of the brand new Beosound A1 Gen 2 versus the outgoing Beoplay A1. In my opinion this New Gen 2 is better in every single way compared to the outgoing model and the battery life is very, Very, VERY long now :D
It is available at dealers like Bang & Olufsen Ter Horst, here in Utrecht, where I bought mine :D

Listening to both back to back at B&O Helsinki, I did not find there to be a huge difference in sound. The second generation I could describe as a little bit more refined, but at the end of the day, both sound fantastic and I won't rush to upgrade from my first-generation A1.
@Mikipedia

really? I think the difference is rather large between them, granted it's not a beolab all of a sudden :p but all the ''whomp whomp'' bass is gone and voices are so much more natural on the Gen 2. It makes me really want to upgrade my A1 Gen 1 lol. Thank you for watching and commenting and especially for going to a B&O store :D

From watching this comparison video, there doesn't seem to be a massive difference in sound profile between the old BeoPlay A1 and the new BeoSound A1. The most noticeable difference was that there seemed to be a bit more bass coming from the BeoPlay A1, whereas the BeoSound A1 sounded a bit more refined to my ears at least. Both sounded fantastic though!

anything with spoken word and especially female voices in it is massively better on the Gen 2 in real life in my opinion. RU-vid also muddled the audio track a bit compared to the original i have on my end... Thank you for watching and commenting :D

Listen to my new A1s every day. Love them in stereo. Didn’t have the gen1 but it sounds a little dense in this to me, gen2 is more open and refined. Actually paired with Apple TV and watched a movie with both paired, and it was pretty nice!

CraigIvor I have had some hiccups but mostly in areas with a lot of competing traffic but loving them a bit will take care of that. I have found having both speakers paired to devices other than each other when in stereo can cause breakup but you can just unpair the extra device and no problems. In summary - nothing I haven’t been able to work through. And you can really get a decent stereo image considering the size and the fact that these are Bluetooth speakers.

So with a "Live" EQ in Background showing me the Bars like in some Music Videos implemented it seems to be exactly the same in Bass Power and Highs though Bass seems to be more controlled now somehow which I can tell that the Bars clearly now shows more defined the Drum Kicks before (or well when switched to 1st gen) it wasnt actually really clear to see whats Bass Synth and whats the Kick while the Highs Sounds mostly unchanged - I mean they were already super good and crisp.. BUT the Mids seem to be boosted slightly around 1-4Khz so rather the mid-mids and upper-mids making voices and the overall Sound more connected and opened giving the listener the feeling its cleaner (which makes the 2-6Khz Region bzw). before the Highs were slightly to prominent aswell as upper Bass from around 100-400Hz now everything is more in line even if its just about a 2db change it makes everything even more natural Sounding than it was before.

Has anybody tried using the new one as a video conference speaker? One of the big differences between the old and the new is that the new one is supposed to have 3 microphones on top of it instead of that single one underneath on the old one. I actually bought the old one to be used as my work conference speaker but the mic is so poor I need to use the computer built in mic and the A1 just as the speaker. Seem like B&O has picked up on that and are now promoting the 3 mic with supposedly excellent call quality. Is this true?

I like the new one. The old one has some advantages, however. The older A1 has a stronger amp 15W vs 5W. It has a richer bass and more impacting bass. The older A1 is louder. When used individually and in stereo pairing, the older one produces a much richer and superior sound. The differences are quite obvious but not enough to keep the old ones over the new ones. I don't spend most of my time listening to the speakers at the maximum volume and so do not notice the missing loudness much. I just listen to the new ones at 70% rather the old ones at 60%. The new ones have excellent sound and when they are not being compared - their sound is supreme. The stereo pairing really adds a significant richness to the sound. The new ones have Bluetooth 5.1 which is excellent, They have ipx67 so are submergeable and They have APTx. The benefits of the new versus the old are that they are new but sound very similar. The peripheral benefits are useful and the Bluetooth 5.1 are significant enough to keep them. The old ones have a superior sound but it is not enough to keep. Bluetooth: The new ones do present a scratchy sound and skip in Bluetooth if a few things happen. In single pairing - if the device you use has something else also paired with it then sometimes the Bluetooth will skip and make a noise. The best thing is to start with nothing and connect to the A1. Then connect anything else if you need to. Better to not connect anything if you can help it. In stereo pairing - If either one is connected to something else while working with the main device - it can cause stuttering. Other than that- they are fine. Great vid. Great tracks - really tested the speakers. Love it! I like the sound of the new one. I even think that burn-in is starting to bring them to the fore. Could be my wanting them to be better now that I don't have the old ones any more. Just had them in the garden this evening. They were excellent!.

Hi @lyare, Thank you for the long comment :D The amps on both are actually the same, both have 2x 30 watt amps. In terms of frequency range the old one goes down to 60hz and the new Gen 2 goes down to 55hz. With the scratchiness you describe, are you sure you're on the latest firmware? I had that on the launch firmware too but 2 days after or so there was an update and it was all gone after that and I had multiple devices connected to both my phone and Ipad with out issue. In terms of sound, the quoted spl is actually the same, but I much prefer the new one as the mids and highs are much more crisp. One could say it's a lot brighter but I also find it to do a lot better with female voices. As for the bass with the new one I also prefer that to the old one as the old one does a bit too much ''whomp whomp'' when it doesn't need to be there. The bass on the new one feels powerful to me but not overpowered like the old one. My old one will actually ''dance'' on the table at 85% volume :p I personally love what they done with the new one, it's fantastic imho :D
@Mikipedia
@Mikipedia 4 года назад
Yeah, RU-vid doesn't seen to keep the music 1:1 from the original audio track, it seems to bump the bass even more... It's different in real life for sure, I now wish my dealer would take my old one back and just give me the new one :P I had no idea the A1 could be this much improved lol. I didn't have any bluetooth scratchiness after the initial update (i did have some but it was on the pre-release software still) and I tried everything to induce it honestly. I would highly recommend going to Manchester and having a listen for your self as in my experience the Gen 2 is a lot better everywhere and no more ''whomp whomp-ing'' when you turn the volume up higher(you can slightly hear it in the video)

Is there any difference in drivers? Are they exactly the same? Is the layout the same? What about battery life? Because on my A1 battery life is rubbish. Ive had my A1 for 2 years now and I like sound very much, but battery is terrible, when listen close to max vol you are lucky to get 2h of play time. Around 2 months ago I picked up P6 second hand on ebay for £79, I think that was a great deal. I love sound of my P6 more than A1 and also battery life is way better on P6. I was wonder if I can pair them both via app? I need to try this one day. Great video 👍

I did a whole nother video on it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FOQ8mXK8XEI.html The battery life is fantastic on the new one, 18 hours at 70 DB and 24 hours at 50 DB. Drivers size and layout is the same, but I have a feeling they're more efficient. Everything is more efficient and that's why the battery life has such a huge bump in performance, besides it being a bigger battery too. :D PS you can only stereo pair identical speakers, so A1 gen 1 with a1 gen 1 or p6 with p6 and so on.
@iu1191
@iu1191 4 года назад
Hey there, You got a MEGA deal on the P6 - I am jealous completely!! I have tried to use the app to stereo pair them but just like the manual says - they will not do it. It is unfortunate though. The Bose Revolve and Revolve+ will pair. In fact the Bose Soundlink Micro will stereo pair with the Bose Soundlink Revolve+. Speakers of completely different construction. They do however make a great sound together. I think the A1 (either generation) and the P6 would be a great match but B&O seems to think differently. Who knows - maybe a firmware update in the future might fix it - I'm not holding my breath😃. The A1'a do a fantastic job pairing with each other - it is more than just a volume boost - I think they sound better as a pair than either does alone. It is more than 1+1=2. The sound is more than just 2. It is more like 1+1=3. The P6 in stereo pair is more like 1+1=4.5. They sound wonderful and they fill any reasonably sized room or garden. They are not worth $600 for a pair (get a second-hand pair of KEF-LSX speakers instead - even if you have to add in $100) but if you can get them cheap - as a stereo pair - I don't know a better pair of Bluetooth, portable speakers. I know some people will claim the Dali Katch and the Vifa Helsinki in stereo pair might be better - I simply have never heard them that way and cannot find a review so I maintain that the P6 pairing is the best I have heard. Would love to hear someone talk about the others in a stereo pair though. Hope my ramblings help.

This speaker is for those who value aesthetics and the notion of a premium brand over actual performance. I had an opportunity (I use that term loosely) to listen to these a while ago and was VERY unimpressed. A few obvious problems make this speaker not worthy of their price. Frankly, these wouldn’t be very compelling at ½ their asking price. This speaker is a HARD PASS. I was using a Fugoo Tough XL, which is a much larger speaker. Obviously, that sounded much better but that’s not a fair comparison. But I had the Fugoo Tough (non-XL) and that was also much better. It was was louder, had tighter and deeper bass, and better highs (faster transient response). The battery life was also much better. I also compared it to the Sony SRS-XB33 and that speaker was also much better in most respects except the high-end clarity. Finally, when compared to the Anker Soundcore Motion+, there is no comparison. The Anker has better low-end response, high end response, volume, battery life, etc. And it’s ~1/3rd of the price. -Limited bass: Having listened to the previous pair, first thing I noticed was the bass was less substantial. This is also very noticeable at higher volumes where the treble overpowers the bass. The amount of bass and bass extension was reduced -Lower volume: To save on battery life, they reduced the volume. It doesn’t get very loud. For example, if you place a speaker outside the shower when taking a shower, this won’t work for those purposes. -NOT omnidirectional: This has ONE tweeter. Therefore, though it is round, the tweeter is at one end and therefore the sound changes depending on your position relative to the speaker. They should have had at least two tweeters. You can get away with one bass driver but you need two tweeters. Running high end in mono sounds weird.

Very bad news for you guys. 1st generation had wired aux in (better sound quality than Bluetooth). 2-gen generation does not have an aux-in. So it is correct to compare the sound of 1st generation through the wire, vs Bluetooth of 2nd generation. Moreover, the 1st generation I use as a soundbar to the Sony TV using a wire, and the 2nd generation I will not be able to use it that way.
@Mikipedia

I don't agree that is the way to compare them at all, fair is like for like, not using two different standards. I also never heard of anybody before today using their A1 this way(3.5mm) so it seems very uncommon :p lastly you can still play the A1 gen 2 over a cable, it's just a USB C cable.
@OlegMasters

@@Mikipedia This is your problem that you have not heard about it. I've been using beoplay a1 x2 for two years now as the soundbar for my home theater. And if I connect a multi-channel converter from digital sound to multi-channel, I can increase the number of channels from stereo to 6 and 8. And the sound over the wire is much better than over Bluetooth. Your test is not fair. Gen1 can sound a lot better. Who knows, Gen1 may sound better over the wire than Gen2. You have to use at least a usb wire for a full test. Otherwise it is a comparison of the Bluetooth version. It is not possible to connect these speakers to a TV via usb. Especially in stereo mode. This is only possible with a 3.5 audio jack. Therefore I will never buy Gen2 and P6.

@@Mikipedia Who knows, maybe people use these speakers more as a soundbar than portable ones. With the TV they work every day for 15 hours. And as a portable device - 1 hour per day? Not every day.

I asked B&O and it’s almost exclusively portable use, I asked the people I know that have one and non use it that way either, only portable. Most people buy a soundbar to use as a soundbar or atleast something that is natively stereo :p

I was told that with 4k comes a higher bitrate for audio too, that's mostly why.

So you are sponsored then? Of course you would be pushing the new version as they want people to replace their old ones.

No I am not sponsored at all. I am not pushing anything, I just like the new version a lot more.
