Yeah, to me, the 9 is the better whiskey, and while I don't really agree with buying whiskey just to sell it later, this one may be more of a "collector's item". And agreed, Blue Spot is lovely!
Great review. I’ve been enjoying Spot whiskeys this past year - drank a bottle of red and yellow, lovely to sit and sip. On the one hand I agree premium price might need higher ABV, but to be honest 46% yellow spot hits… the spot. I had blue spot in a pub a few times, really savoured it, but I’ve got a bottle of redbreast cask strength I keep passing over on the shelf because it’s almost too big to drink if you just want to sit down and enjoy an evening. This edition of gold spot sounds nice, but not €150 nice.
Yeah, that's exactly my thought, I think that IDL have gone too far down the "top-shelf" route, especially with so many amazing whiskeys out there from the new brands, which also come in at half the price!
Still a Yellow Spot lover since first drops went down quite a while ago at a wonderful restaurant in Dalkey. My wife really liked it and that sold it. 🙂 Anyway, nice review! I look forward to your cocktail idea. Slainte!
Great info! I held off from grabbing this one when it released. The higher price and lower abv just put me off. I’m not sure why this one wasn’t considered another in the wine series as opposed to another Gold Spot.
Cheers Stacie! I think they are looking to create a "new" collection of gold spots to drive prices through the collector/reseller market. But yeah, with the bourbon-sherry-wine pipeline, it could definitely have been another one of the wine finish series
The Gold Spot 9 year is my favorite Spot. I am very disappointed they are making it a test bottle with different methods instead of just making a new Spot for their experimental range. I ordered 2 of these but that is because my friends will be over and we will geek out over blinding it and diving into the bottle over a period of time so got two to keep one I can slowly enjoy. The Gold Spot 9 I bought every time I saw one with the low abv I , most likely, will only get the 2 bottles.
Definitely one to enjoy as it is a really nice whiskey, but for the price, you'd wouldn't expect it to be anything other than nice! I do agree though that the 9 was better
Oh, this sounded really good. The price is very hard to fathom, but coming back to your nosing notes, it sounded solid. I would say 46 is much better than 40% but yes, 50+ would always be better. Cheers!
Spot on Matt. I saw this bottle at the loop for 136 euros but I walked on by when I saw the 46%. I had 2 bottles of blue spot already in the luggage so this was a hard pass for me. I agree if it was 50% or higher I would have been a buyer. Strange they had the red spot for 126 euros sitting right next to the gold spot 13. Besides, I love madeira (and marsala) finished whiskey ( Bushmills 21 and or Blue spot).
Terrific review Matt! As always! Love your reviews! I can’t justify this price at this ABV and I don’t live super sweet whisky expressions. I do get a craving here and there for a delicious sherry bomb in a single malt Scotch and I have a bunch that are amazing but I have never been a huge Valpolicella (so?) wine fan and mainly due to how sweet it is. If this Spit whisky was at an oily mouth coating 51 and up ABV I’d be tempted to get a bottle just to check it out but at the 46% ABV at this high price I will definitely pass. I have a friend who I know will buy this whisky so I will get a taste at some point! We share back and forth with whiskies and belong to the same Whisky club. I think you have made excellent points here and I agree some people will want to get this as a collector bottle. I understand that. Awesome video to enjoy!! Thanks Matt! Cheers!

Thanks! I'd say Redbreast is the better buy. I've heard that there's a lot of variations between batches of Blue Spot, so while I prefer my batch of Blue Spot to Redbreast CS, the Redbreast will be more consistent. Hope that helps!
@@TheWhiskeyNerd it’s kind of sad considering all the other bottles even their every day green spot comes with a tube. Guess I’ll just have to get creative and make my own. Haha
My first thoughts having just tried it, its good but maybe not worth the price. Having said that it’s still early day. I wouldn’t get put off by the lower ABV (46%) I don’t think it’s relevant, It’s all in the taste. For example the blue spot is one of my least favourites, for me it’s punchy but lacks refinement, I take this over the blue any day.
