I'll admit I wasn't originally intending to get one of the new Hornby 9Fs but having seen some of the detail on their early prototypes and more recently the decorated samples, I was convinced! The last large loco I reviewed from Hornby was the W1 Hush Hush, which I generally liked but I did find it left a little bit to be desired in some areas.
The brand new 9F from Hornby definitely seems like it's looking to fix some of those issues, we have much better and stronger packaging for a start which helps protect the loco. The majority of the boiler is also die cast metal too which is really nice on a large loco like this and the detail is incredible. We also get additional features like the firebox LED, included figures, and upgraded 21 Pin decoder socket and space included for speakers too.
All this does come at a price though and the 9F is definitely an expensive model. The good thing though is that Hornby seem to be taking note of the competition they're up against from other manufacturers and are making improvements on their end to at least try and justify these higher prices we're seeing. Will it be enough for everyone, no absolutely not - but hopefully this review will help you make up your mind.

"Higher prices mean people are much more selective on which models to buy" - very true. We used to be able to buy locos thinking "It'd look nice on my layout even though it's not my era/region" or simply "I think the prototype is interesting", not anymore
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Год назад
Yeah, there's a lot of locos like that in my collection but as prices rise that just won't be an option for most people. Honestly, I felt the same way with the 9F originally. I wasn't going to get one because I thought the price was too high compared to Hornby's previous standard. However I was won over once I'd saw the various features it had and while appreciate not everyone will feel the same, I do think I got a very good loco for my money. Thanks for watching 😃

Lol quick check up UK 1960s salaries and 1960s models vs UK 2022 salaries and 2022 Models. Here's a hint: We still better off than 60 yrs like it or not. Yes we gotten hype inflation but the pricing is still reasonable compared to stuff like 60 yrs ago when adjusted.

An excellent review - thank you! The metal body is interesting and welcomed, whilst details such as the pipework around the cab looks really good. Yes, the centre drivers on the 9F are flangeless (I understand this is why NRIL won't allow them on the main line). 9F driving axles are also hollow. Whilst I cannot attest to this Immingham? based locomotive, it appears the Southern Region (both 73A Stewarts Lane and 73B Bricklayers Arms) started applying electrification flashes during the summer of 1960. PS - Resealable detailing pack is a useful touch.

It does certainly seem like an upgrade on the previous offerings doesn't it! And like you pointed out it's good to see Hornby taking notice of the little detail differences between different eras for the different models too. Thanks for watching 😃

I'm glad to see that Hornby have followed what Dapol/Accurascale have done with their boxes as I always really enjoyed how sturdy the packaging is and it made each model feel more special when unboxing them. And while I'm glad to see all the 9Fs appearing and that they appear to be worth it, I can't help but feel a little jealous while I wait to hear whether mines in stock yet. Cheers

Hey Paul, yes the new packaging is definitely a welcome improvement especially after the whole W1 debacle! I think Bachmann are the only manufacturer using the standard style now so I wonder if they will follow suit. Hope your own 9F arrives soon and thanks for watching 😃

A really great balanced review of the new Hornby 9F. I received mine in the last few days; an Evening Star in BR Lined Green (it's my third as I have two earlier versions, yes know I, what am I doing?) and this is a big improvement and I have to say I was impressed with the quality especially the metal body and the detailing. The livery on mine looks great quality too but I think yours in black looks great. As you say I was concerned at delivery after the poor packaging on my W1 Hush Hush caused so much damage, but the new packing is great. Thanks for your excellent review.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Год назад
Thanks Nigel! Wow, I bet Evening Star looks brilliant. I was almost tempted to one myself but I do like the plain black livery on these huge machines. Yes the new packaging is a very welcome improvement isn't it. It seems like Hornby listened to all the feedback during the Hush Hush release and have made a significant upgrade here. It certainly makes receiving a loco much more enjoyable if you're not worried about how many pieces it's going to turn up in 😆 Thanks for watching 🤩

A good, fair and balanced review. It's encouraging that Hornby seem to have listened, with much better packaging and even the little things like the resealable accessory bag. Interesting to see they went with a diecast boiler (which it should be at that price). I'm guessing the positive feedback from models like the J15, J36, K1, B12 and Pecketts (small locos where the extra weight helps) has been a factor, plus the demand for their new Dublo locos which also have diecast boilers and sell like hotcakes despite the crazy price. Many retailers are selling this 9f for £227.69 (10% off RRP). Personally I can't justify spending that on just one loco. Not when I could get two, possibly three, mint condition, latest tooling, locos for a similar amount secondhand, or one loco and a fair bit of rolling stock for a similar amount. N.B. When it comes to models there are a few things I think about. Some of these you've covered, but perhaps you can add others for future reviews? Especially 2 and 3: 1) Price/value for money. e.g. It's one thing to charge a huge price for a newly tooled model with lots of diecast, high level of detail, etc and another to charge the same for an old tooling plastic model. 2) Does it have a decent motor and reliable mechanism? Or a cheap motor that lacks torque, or packs up a few months down the line? To be fair Hornby are usually good here IMO, though not always. 3) Is it easy to access the inside of the loco for maintenance, fitting DCC chips, etc? 4) Looks. In particular: a) Does the livery have a nice finish or look washed out, plasticy, too shiny, etc? b) Is there a good level of detailing? c) How robust is it? There's usually a trade off between the last two, so it's a question of getting the balance right. 5) How does it run on a layout? e.g. Can it haul a reasonable rake without struggling, especially on inclines? How well does it negotiate curves/points/diamond crossings compared to other models of similar size/wheel configuration? One other thing I'd love to see is an occasional follow up video, where after having run the loco for a few months you tell us if any issues have emerged, or if you're still happy with it. You could feature a few different locos per video for this. Hope you don't mind the suggestions and keep up the good work!😀
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Год назад
Glad you found it useful and yes I suspect you may be right about the die cast boiler being as a result from positive feedback from other models. Great suggestions for the reviews although I think I cover most of these informally within the videos anyway, so perhaps it's just the way it's presented. A follow up video is an interesting idea too although again I sort of cover this in my livestreams (which I admittedly haven't been able to do for a while) as I usually end up talking about the locos that people ask me to run in a more long term view. All great food for thought though which I'll definitely keep in mind. Thanks for watching 😃

A great model which I have two of them, one of which has the Westinghouse Pumps. We are lucky as we also have the upgraded Bachmann 9F with pickups in the Tender and decorated Cab as well and alongside the Hornby I have two of those in my fleet as well. Although the Hornby 9F wins out on detail the Bachmann release despite the age of the Tooling remains competitive.

Yes it's great that as modellers we now have a choice between two fantastic manufactures. Looks like over all Hornby have done a good job on this model but I do worry about the motor now I have found out that it's the same one that failed a lot in the B12, Q6 and S15. Some do get lucky and get a good runner but it seems to be a ticking time bomb and too much of a risk for me at the price, my green LNER B12 so far seems okay but did have another issue. I have the Bachmann Evening Star and I'm very happy with that.

Hi Robin, yes having seen Sam's Trains review it does look like he got one with a dodgy motor. Hopefully mine remains the fantastic runner it is but I can understand not wanting to shell out a lot of money for something that could potential have problems down the line. It is good to hear and see that this model is a success. The model does not appear to slow down on tighter curves like the one Sam's Trains reviewed. Your one does derail at 13 minutes 23 seconds but I suspect that is a one-off and may be due to your self-confessed not always perfect track. Thank you for an informative video.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 7 месяцев назад
Yes, certainly no problems with mine I've found it more than capable of everything I've thrown at it. I recently ran it all weekend at an exhibition and it was perfect the entire time. For full transparency, the derailment at 13:23 is entirely down to the track. You'll notice it's where the track crosses over a baseboard join and the rails weren't correctly aligned (more than just the 9F was having trouble here). This has since been rectified and all locos now crossed over the baseboard joints without issue. Thanks for watching 😃

Looks like an excellent model! It's a lot of money, of course - but in this case, you get what you pay for. Compared to my existing Bachmann model, this does look like an improvement: there's the firebox glow, a more modern mechanism, and more finesse in places. I don't think it's enough of an improvement to justify upgrading - but if I didn't already have a 9F, then I'd be tempted!
@ThatModelRailwayGuy

I think you've hit the nail on the head there Christopher! It's definitely got a lot of little extra upgrades over the current Bachmann model but if you put them both side by side on a layout they wouldn't look drastically different. If someone doesn't already have a 9F though, the Hornby one is now the clear winner if you don't mind spending that little bit extra. Thanks for watching 😃

Looks like a massive improvement over the W1 (and I'm one of the minority, it seems, that liked that model). I'm still not certain it's worth the price though, being fairly happy with my Bachmann Evening Star - although having a classic black one is a tempting prospect.

Yes I don't think the W1 was as bad as people made it out to be but it was sullied slightly by the price increase and the amount that that turned up damaged. Well, I don't think this one will be on the suitcase layout! Looks pretty nice to me. Seems to run well, too. Low starting speed, navigates those tight curves pretty well, blind center driver. My virtual 9F will stall on tight radii, or even derail if going fast enough. As mentioned below, I'd like to see the loco/tender gap closed a bit, though that would affect the minimum radius some. Powerful enough to pull the bumper off a '57 Buick, eh?!! Considering what you're getting, even the price seems reasonable. Excellent review.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Год назад
It's the wrong gauge for a start 😅 Yes it really is a very smooth and controlled runner considering it's size and complexity! The tender gap can be closed up but (as you suspect) this would affect the running on corners and points - but it is an option for static display. I think you're right though, although it is expensive you do seem to get a lot for your money! Thanks for watching 👍

5:34 Yes, the real 9fs indeed do not have flanges on the centre wheels. I've read that this actually caused some issues for BR when they drove over pointwork, due to the possibility of the centre wheels riding over the point blades and derailing the engine because they dont have flanges to keep them between the two rails.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Год назад
In a similar way the main reason the 9Fs can't do rail tours on the mainline today is because the check rails in points have since been raised above the running rail height, which the flangeless wheels would presumably end up fouling! Thanks for watching 😃

The loco valve gear is set in mid gear, so the combination lever moves and the expansion link oscillates, but the radius rod and therefore valve rod don't move, so neither should the loco. If you are a railway enthusiast you really should know this basic stuff. You don't even seem sure 9Fs had flageless centre drivers!

Hi Vince, yes someone else had already pointed out the regulator. Everything else you mentioned I was already fine with though so I'm not sure why you felt the need to be so condescending. I would strongly disagree with your statement that you have to understand all this to be a railway enthusiast though. While there's nothing wrong with having that knowledge, many people are more than happy to just enjoy the trains - especially in the world of model railways were I suspect very few people have an expert knowledge of how every loco works. Is a 21 pin decoder such a big upgrade over the trustworthy 8 pin only to add firebox flickering ?
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Год назад
It depends how you view it really. While you see the 8 Pin as trustyworthy, there are a lot of others who feel it's outdated and clunky. Certainly most of the major manufacturers have moved away from using this and the 6 Pin in favour of 21 Pin and Next18. Additionally, a firebox flicker has always been possible on a 8 Pin decoder too (in fact I did this on a Hornby 0-4-0 last year) so it's more of an upgrade in terms of technology rather than features. Hey Barnaby, all of Hornby's recent tender locos have the option of adjust the gap between the loco and tender if you want to. Otherwise this would most likely have been part of the Hornby Dublo (or similar) range instead. To be honest I've not seen evidence the 9F motors burn out "very often". About the only 2 things this has over it are finer pipework and a painted cab

Honestly the locomotive is a bit of a mixed bag in my opinion. Some things like the pipes right behind the deflectors and the lack of anything between the boiler and the wheels (because there should actually be some parts in that open space) make the model kinda miss the mark. The same with the finish, maybe it's the footage but at least some of the older Hornby locomotives had a really nice satin finish (B12 for example) and this one looks kinda flat. The bronze pipework for example is also just ew. And generally that isn't an issue, but for 252 pounds you should expect Sutton Locomotive Works in terms of quality and details. Overall the model is pretty okay though, I might buy one when I see one on sale that isnt this expensive.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Год назад
I think this is really where it comes down to each individual personal opinion. To play devils advocate, I don't feel like there's anything obvious missing between the frames and I quite like the finish of the Hornby models with metal bodies. But this is a big part of why I make these videos. It's all very well me saying what I like or don't like about a model but the most important part is being able to show you, so everyone can make up their own minds as everyone will have their own preferences. @ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Год назад
Hi Gerard, mine ran absolutely fine on analogue before I put the decoder in for the video. The only minor issue I had (as I mentioned in the video) was that there was a tight spot at slow speed - but this disappeared once the loco was run in. While I didn't run it with a particularly long train the brakevan on the back is quite heavy - most locos can't pull this around the layout with anything more than 2-3 wagons due to a slight incline on the layout - so I was surprised the 9F handled this with relative ease. Of course if you prefer the Dapol model, that's also fine. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

For me the hyped fire box flicker is a waste of money, the reason why is a ex Fireman on the Colne Valley Railway, who has fired locos on the K&ESR, NVR & NYMR is that the only time the firebox doors were open was to shovel coal in or to reduce smoke (secondly air) over than that it is considered a waste of heat & fuel or money be it 1970/80s or in today's climate. The same goes for the safety valves lifting, waste of steam/heat and water! looks a grand model though
@ThatModelRailwayGuy

Hi Ronald, yes the drawbar can be shorter. Not impressed myself. I think the Bachmann model is still better, overall. For £250 this seems just not enough of an improvement, Bachmann's effort deals better with the brakes, and hangers, the latter appear to be not modeled at all here. The wheels whilst they have accurate spokes, they are, or look far wider than the bachmann, making them look too chunky. The tender gap just looks ridiculously large, and could have been improved with a new engineered solution, but Hornby has gone with a standard simplistic approach. The mould lines on the boiler and smokebox are too distracting for me, and would be harder to removed than the single line on the bachmann version. On the real loco, because it has a large gap between the frames and the boiler it is quite noticeable that you can see some pipework but in particular the sand box filler tubes. None of this detail has been represented at all, making it look too empty under the boiler, not helped by the featurless block chassis, which should at least hint at the chassis being made of frames and not how it actually looks.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy

Fair enough, personally I think that's one of the benefits of having the same locos made by different manufacturers on the market. It gives us greater choice and for you it turns out the one that is cheaper is the one you prefer, so that's definitely a win.
