In the history lesson, the fact that there is no J36's left in preservation is false. The locomotive shown in the video is a past livery of the preserved locomotive "Maude".

FUN FACT: In 1917, 25 of these engines were loaned out to the ROD ( Railway Operating Division) to help haul Supply Trains across France during WW1. When all 25 Engines returned home after the War, the NBR named them all after Important People and Places during there time in France. Maude was one of these Engines that went to France and was named after Lieutenant-General Sir Patrick Fredrick Stanley Maude, Night Commander of the Bath. But... try fitting that on the Splasher...

Thanks for the reviews and inviting us to look at your railway. Takes me back to the mid 70s when I had an enormous layout which as all but gone except for two engines. The Golden Fleece and Wrenns Barnstaple. By the way Ive sent you a picture of Maude that you might be interested in that I took when it came through our town in the 80s. Keep up the good work.

Oh yeeeeees, Maude! I've been waiting for this, the NB J36 is such a delicious thing! As for the lining, it happens sometimes that the object to be printed ends up a mil or so off in the machine, fast production probably makes imaculate quality control impossible and as we all know these things slip through. Has happened to me with dodgy motors or decoders but returning it to the seller with the reciept and an explanation of the issue usually clears that up.
@SamsTrains

haha thanks a lot Jonatan - yeah it really is, haha! Yeah of course - it is a shame that they couldn't get it right, given the price - but overall still a great model! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Very good video! I will say, Hornby have really done a good job with their selection of new locos this year. I think I may just have to get one for myself. One nitpick I do have with the sound though is the fact that there are only two chuffs per wheel turn when there should be four. But none the less it is still gorgeous and I might buy one. All the best!
@SamsTrains

Hi Sam. I agree this is a great model and the railed tender is terrific. I have only recently found out how big the North British railway was. At the grouping of the railways in 1923, the North British Railway was the largest railway company in Scotland and the fifth!! largest in the United Kingdom. In that year it became a constituent of the LNER. Extraordinary!

An amazing review, Sam. Maude the J36 was an beautifull loco, sice it had many features that made it look apart. The TTS sound was very good, the perfomance as well being a smoth rider and powerfull too. The quality was also a thumbs up because of the many diecast on the loco, and especially the detail wich was very nice and eye catchy, due to all the features they presented that just add to the charm of the model. Overall, it is a fantastic tender engine that shows you that Hornby knew what they were doing. Anyways, I hope you have a nice day, and I'll see you next time.

I have the LNER and BR WW1 J36 loco packs for MSTS, from UKTS. Now you have a more prototypical snowplow for your steam locomotives, you could do a snowplow running session ( nudge nudge, wink wink.) You said none survived, go to the Bo'ness and Kinell Railway, and see the paradox in action.
@SamsTrains

@@SamsTrains They are nice to drive, but need separate cabviews and sounds to work to their full potential, they come in the LNER pack (4 locos, two liverys) and the BR pack ( 11 locos, 3 liverys, weathered versions, tender cabs.) I got both packs, and love them to bits. They are also pretty powerful.

Excellent review of the J36 aka Maude from Hornby Sam 👍😉 I'm planning to buy one of these in LNER black livery, but I find the North British Railway black livery with beautiful yellow lining is as you said a eye catching and more beautiful to have instead just plain black on both LNER lettering & BR crest version. The real Maude is painting in BR plain black and she hasn't been in steam since the start of the early 2000s for the filming of the 2000 Railway Children film.

Good Evening Sam my friend, That is yet an outstanding review of the Hornby J36 Maude in NBR Livery, she's the most beautiful out of the Hornby J36's, wonderful sounds, the detail, the running performance is flawless and impressive strength, especially pulling 5 LNER Teak Coaches up Gordon's Hill. I've pre-ordered mine back in late December 2018, it's due to arrive either Monday or Tuesday, I really love the sounds, but I'll be removing the sound chip and replacing it with the analogue chip, so she can run on DC, as I don't have a DCC Controller. Now back to your layout, I can see 5 0-6-0 Tender Engines in the sidings, the odd one out is the Hattons SECR P Class Tank Engine on the turntable, I especially like seeing the Great Western Dean Goods hauling these very smart coaches. I give your video. 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 100 out of 10. Thank you for your time. Kind Regards Jordan 😉

The ‘Scottish Railway Preservation Society’ [SRPS], owner’s of ex-NBR J36 0-6-0 “Maude”, used to run ’Santa Specials’ around the Edinburgh Suburban Line from Edinburgh Waverley Station back in the 1980’s. She hauled four Mk1 coaches in BR blue/grey livery, a SO, CK, BSK, SO. 🚂🚞🚞🚞🚞. Incidentally, in 1975 “Maude” also hauled the SRPS’s two preserved Caledonian coaches from Falkirk via the WCML and the S&C to the “Stockton & Darlington 150th Anniversary Cavalcade” at Shildon, County Durham (now renamed “Locomotion”, the northern outhouse of the National Railway Museum York. Don’t know why Hornby haven’t produced a “S&D 150” train pack featuring “Maude” plus the two Caledonian coaches from their previously released ‘Caledonian Single Wheeler Train Pack’. Hornby are missing out on a huge trick there!

12.10 The clack-boxes are in the cab -- you can see them at 14.07 -- and I'm pretty sure the devices on the smokebox are lubricators. These feed special high-grade oil into the steam-pipes from the regulator to the valve chests, and thereby lubricate the slide-valves and pistons. They have little handwheels on them so that the driver can precisely adjust the flow rate. It's great to see that Hornby have provided a snow-plough at last on a Scottish loco. These detachable fittings were actually quite common on Scottish railways in winter, for obvious reasons, but it's only with the advent of NEM sockets that providing them on models has become feasible. Good one, Hornby. 15.09 The plate on the back of the tender is apparently a number-plate, I think -- hard to be absolutely sure from the video -- lettered 'North British Railway'. It was quite common in the 19th century for locos to be paired with 'their own' tenders, whereas pooling of tenders became common in the 20th century. Then of course it became usual for tenders to have capacity plates instead of loco number plates. 25.15 Freight locomotives were not at all unknown hauling passenger trains, particularly local and intermediate trains, when a shed was having availability problems. So no problems here. Excellent review of an excellent model. I wish Hornby could maintain tis standard on all their new models, and that other manufacturers could move up to reach it.

No doubt this is one of the best models you have this year. I love all the Scottish and Caledonian engines and how they look. “Maude” was Mainline Certified from the 1970’s till the early 1990’s. Regularly hauled the “SRPS Santa Specials” around the Edinburgh Suburban Line in the 1980’s & ‘90’s, pulling four Mk1 blue/grey coaches [TSO CK BSK TSO]. She also hauled the SRPS’s two preserved Caledonian coaches to the “Stockton & Darlington 150th Anniversary Festival Cavalcade” at NRM Shildon (now ‘Locomotion’) in 1975 via the WCML and the S&C.

On the 11th of August 1968, steam traction on BR’s Network officially ceased to exist 🚂😔. But in early 1969, two ex-NBR J36’s (ex-Dunfermline Upper MPD) were still operating from Seafield Colliery (nr Kirkcaldy, Fife) to the Exchange Sidings on the ECML to Aberdeen. This was an entirely BR operation on behalf of NCB Scotland. Apparently the BRB, when they found out about this, went absolutely apoplectic! Orders we’re sent out immediately to cease ALL Steam Operations from Dunfermline Upper MPD. You can’t blame the Shed Superintendent - the Clayton Class 17’s sent north to replace the J36’s were bloody useless! FYI a Snowplough-fitted ex-NBR J36 (attached to an ex-NBR Brake Van) was permanently stabled at Riccarton Shed south of Hawick on the Waverley Route until the line closed on the 6th of January 1969. During the winter months, she was kept in ‘warm storage’ for immediate readiness. I grew up in the Borders, and can remember Snow Drifts over 22’ deep on the A7(T).

Maude is actually a preserved engine. As far as I know, she is on display in a museum at the Bo'Ness and Kinniel Railway. Sadly she doesn't carry the NBR black, but rather bog-standard BR black.

She is indeed - I said the wrong thing for some reason - I must have gotten carried away! It would be lovely to see her in NBR colours again! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

When I got my Bachmann 37 they supply snow ploughs as part of the Detail Pack, they use the NEM Socket for those too, but decided just as a Joke to fit em to my Bachmann Jubilee, ran pretty well too! But I would like to see some Steam Engine snow ploughs for some of the more modern locos though... Then again I'm trying to think of engines were it'd be suitable.

Great mine is en route from Rails of Sheffield. I don’t run DCC so first job will be to take TTS decoder out and replace with blanking plug. Being from Scotland of course I had to have this model. In fact I’ve already got Haig in BR Black . Because ordered when first announce I’ve got mine for £126 which is not bad at all . And as you say makes you realise just how expensive the forthcoming Bachmann/ Rails 812 is about £70 more expensive in fact . Being Scottish I’ve got one of these on order too. Had the price been lower I might have ordered more than one .
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 5 лет назад
That's great Rusell, really hope you enjoy yours as much as I did mate - good luck with the conversion, hopefully you'll be able to sell on your decoder! Yes indeed - those are crazily more expensive - I'm wondering if it's even possible for them to be sufficiently better than the J36 to even justify half that increase in price! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Wow, I'm blown away. I think it deserved full marks! It's just perfect :) I hope the caledonian 812 will be the same when bachmann release that model because I want to convert it to either donald or douglas (probably gonna have the standard 3 pole, which would be a fraud considering its 200£).
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 5 лет назад
I know - it really is that superb! I might have given it full marks, if not for the paintwork issues, and ugly gaps in the boiler - but otherwise, just a fantastic model! The 812 will have to be even better - I'd say perfect - for the asking price! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Nice 0-6-0 locomotive with tender! :) I never knew this locomotive came with a snowplow which engines always use to clear snow from the tracks. I know a lot of British trains have buffers on the front while American locomotives have a cowcatcher at the front of them. :P
